Been playing since about 1987, and as with others been a bit on and off, with a few years hiatus. Accumulated some tasty kit, got a very nice Japanese '85 Squier (the fabled ones), a Burns Brian May model, I had a MIJ '70s reissue Strat, but sold it, and also have a Les Paul copy which is OK. I hate floating trems, so I modified the Strat and BM so that the trem body is wedged to the body. Got a 1980s Yamaha acoustic which sounds great. I used to have an Electroharmonix Memory Man Deluxe which I sold for £10 when I was a student. I should have held on to it. I had a Behringer V-Amp2 which is nice, but spent too much time messing with the settings rather than playing so sold it. Got a BOSS CS3 compressor which should be standard kit for all guitarists, and a Morley opto Wah pedal. I use a Roland Cube 30x which is fantastic sounding amp - one of the best. I modified it to provide an aux speaker tap so I could use it as a monitor and have a DI into the PA without needing to mic it up. Mind you, the little Cube 30x is loud enough for a small pub. Also got this - a 1974 Marshall Superlead with 4x12 Celestion loaded cab. Purple Tolex - pretty rare. It's absolutely ear-splitting, so doesn't get much use round the house. I've got a geographic number from: Internet Telephone Calling Solutions - DrayTEL I used to have a phone-to-VOIP adapter but that broke, so I just use a SIP app on my phone when I want to use it. It's quite handy when phoning abroad, or if you're abroad you can connect your phone to a local wireless point and make & receive calls on your geographic number (or SIP number). Other services are available, of course, and ViberOut looks interesting.

I echo this. I keep coming back to Ubuntu and Unity. I also find that Unity is a superb interface, it's a launcher and docker in one. I've tied my middle mouse button to the workspace switcher so a middle click shows a nice expose of virtual desktops, then right-click to zoom into the desktop I want. This is really handy when working on multiple projects (which is all the time). I've tried all sorts of DEs, from the Flux/Openbox type to Gnome3 and KDE, but I find Unity the most efficient interface. Gnome 3 came close, but I had to install Docky to get what I wanted. The permanently hidden app bar was a pain, too. But that's just my opinion. For me, Unity simply hits the sweet spot in terms of efficiency, speed and design. I use 12.04 LTS in work, and 13.10 at home (after running the Fixbuntu script - the online lenses spun me out).

You're right about this. The special bundles are usually cheaper than standalone broadband. The trouble is for telecoms companies is that they know the jig's up - the only commodity of value coming into the house is broadband. A landline is archaic. Mobiles have elbowed these out of the way, and if you want international, there's dirt-cheap SIP/VOIP/IM+video apps and devices. On-demand TV & films are routed over the net straight to TVs or boxes.

We're booked to have this done in a couple of weeks, but I'm a little worried about possible complications, namely damp. I've done my best to research this, and can find sites suggesting it's the best thing in the world, and of course the opposite. My question is - have you had it done and have you had any problems? As a bit of background, my house in a 1930s semi, with rendered brick and black mortar. We had some damp areas when we moved in, but these were remedied by a builder (who did some brickwork) and we haven't had any noticeable damp in the last few years. TIA
