What raid controller etc are you using? If it's not built into the disk you'll need to get the drivers and use the import etc (I assume you have created a virtual disk in the raid controller before trying to build it too? ) Steve

As long as you're not going massively over the 64 threads mentioned above you shouldn't hit any major issues (but as with everything you need to check it over time as might need to tweak them) Whether you do the 2 or 1 CPU route won't affect anything, as they're all "fake" based on the thread counts Steve

When you say it's 100% is that the host or the VMs? You should be able to see which one is using the CPU up as you may just need to tweak which VM you've given the CPU to etc. The host shouldn't need 8GB on it's own, and SIMs deffo needs more than 4GB, but the DC should be fine with that. How big is the school? Assuming it's primary/small etc if it's only the 2 servers? Steve

Generally I work backwards from the CPUs, if you mean these ones from your link: https://ark.intel.com/products/83356/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2630-v3-20M-Cache-2_40-GHz You got 16 threads per CPU, so 64 across the cluster to play with (for 0 contention, generally I go max about 2x if it's for some servers that aren't always in use e.g. backup etc). To put this in perspective compared to ours (and I've tried to match the closest style of server we have to yours: File server with shared applications - 4GB 2 Backup Server - 8GB 4 Biometrics server - 4GB 4 Domain Controller - 8GB 2 Management server (includes Impero Server, DirSync and SalamanderAD) - 16GB 4 SIMS - 16GB 8 Web Server - Spiceworks - 4GB 2 File Server - Students - 12GB 2 ADFS Web Application Proxy server - 4GB 4 Old CMIS Server - 8GB 4 ADFS FED Server - 4GB 4 RDS -24GB 4 RDS Gateway - 4GB 1 Web server - Home Access Plus - 4GB 1 SCCM Server - 16GB 6 Print server - 4GB 4 File Server - Staff - 12GB 2 Total 58 We have a few styles of servers you don't as I break things down a lot more, but remember a lot of these things e.g. file servers don't really use CPU much until dedup is run which is normally overnight etc. Maybe you'd want more on RDS etc if it's higher too, but I wouldn't go overboard unless you're maxing out an individuals VM vCPU all the time. I'd add a caveat to the above though, remember to check things like licensing especially regarding SQL etc to see what it needs. A prime example is anything using SQL express is limited to 1 socket, or 4 core (Using the lower of the two), If you have 4x 1 Sockets, you'll only use 25% of the CPU etc compared to 1x 4 socket. Happy to have a quick squiz at it if you got Teamviewer or something on it, but could be a lot of things really. What was changed originally that broke it? Anything DHCP/switch wise? Version Upgrade? Steve

You might want to double check that It's 5 "user" activations as they changed over to a per user basis from 17, the activations are in regards to a computer/laptop/tablet etc. One license is one user on up to 4 computers. You can buy site licenses still but if you're not paying annually for the license for all staff that's wrong Steve

11.4 was the last edition that was free to use (without subscription) as long as you had smartboards. So most schools didn't bother upgrading after it until things started breaking in Win10 Steve

Normally you get issues if you try it on a VM as it boots too fast and bypasses the option to hit the key But should be able to on a physical box, if not the other way to force it is using a recovery CD and temporary modifying the bcedit to force it to boot to safemode on next boot Steve

You should be able to get to safemode normally still (Assuming the bsod is after normal boot screens etc?) and do the last good known boot style, then fix it in that. Steve

If you want to swap back to primary (which it should always be unless you changed it or are using stacks etc) boot set-default flash primary (If you aren't sure why it was changed etc you could just upgrade secondary firmware and leave it be but you'll have same issue anytime you upgrade ) And when you're doing the flash upgrades you can specify primary/secondary to update other slots, as mentioned generally you do a secondary upgrade, make it manual reboot to secondary to test, then do primary if all is well Steve

The secondary image isn't booted to by default unless you changed the boot order. It's generally the one you update first to test a new firmware before putting it to primary. If you run show flash (in config mode) what's it show? Steve

You linked the installers in your post? Solus updates itself once installed so those shouldn't be the upgrades but the different versions depending when it's being installed etc. Unless they've changed how they did it but pretty sure if you try those it'll be the installer Steve

Depending on the exact model some need the zip's expanded before it'll accept it even though it lets you pick them zipped still as we had that before. Also are you updating the secondary image first or are you trying to do straight to primary? Other option would be to do a direct USB flash if not (Assuming this is the newer models with it?) Steve

Not so much uni wise, but we had an external company do similar linked to some robotics programme. One of the two requested software installed onto our own devices, another one used their own laptops etc but in the carry cases (think like the ipad "baskets" but for laptops, guess that depends how bulky the laptops are anyway though). Power wise I don't see it being an issue, as that's really down to the school to sort out, no different to if you were just going to present with a laptop/projector you'd need power etc. Internet wise they used a pre-configured VPN wireless router so basically as long as the network supported the VPN the laptops/robots would connect to their own wireless signal and get out that way. Thus no inspection should be required etc (The max you'd have to get them to do is allow the VPN IP potentially). In regards to the rebuilding, it depends what you're actually trying to run/do, but why not just have a pre-setup image that's cloned? Disable updates etc (until it's updated on a scheduled basis). They won't be domain joined etc if they're off-site so shouldn't be any issues with using cloned GUIDs etc. Then a rebuild will already have the software updated (to said date) and any performance configs done. Your adml's should be in a subfolder with their languages, I'm not sure that'll even work like that :s Or aren't you using central store? Don't you have an (in this example) en-us folder with the admls inside? Steve

When you say the same error which one as you listed two. The WinstoreUI one is normally when you have the winstoreui admx and the newer windowsstore.admx at the same time (The old one winstoreui needs deleting, same with the adml) Steve

Yeah it's something to do with there was a Win7 and later flag that was put into it, but removed after 1511 as they assumed no-one needed it, which than causes problems as it recognises the newer OS etc. "File \\server\SysVol\stm.internal\Policies\PolicyDefini tions\SearchOCR.admx" It's the admx and adml that needed changing, but should only be that one to resolve this issue Steve

You could try these two, they're 2013 versions on ours, haven't done the 1803 GPOS yet so think these should work for you, but obviously backup and whatnot searchocr.zip Steve

-Edit - Ignore that skim read That's the 1803 error not the older one isn't it. There's a thread on here about editing the policy to resolve the issue, but don't think an official fix was released yet. If I remember right you needed to change the searchocr adml back from the 1511 one to override the 1803 one as it's missing one of the definitions Steve

I mean the short answer is will said downtime of servers impact you enough to worry while fixing the host? We have hyperV set to only allow a 50% limit (e.g. 1 spare host "worth" of RAM at all times) so we can always migrate them over if needed. But if you have some services, lets say SCCM that you can have offline for a week with no real issues you could just set that to power off etc Steve
