Wireless Networking Software
starscream replied to willkeddie's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Net Profile Switch! It is fantastic! You have to pay for it but it is very little and it makes like so much easier! I work on several sites and sometimes need static ip addresses so I have them all programmed in and just click and activate the one I want to use. Easy to use, looks great, flawless! I spend donkeys looking for something that did this. I remember using a few similar free ones but they were useless and half the time didnt change the settings at all! -
Clever asset management techniques?
starscream replied to starscream's topic in Network and Classroom Management
It must have been a much older version of this I tried as this latest one is absolutely spot on fella! Cheers for pointing me in it's direction! Bye bye sysaid! -

oh I see, I have seen that before, can't remember why I felt that sisaid was better. Might as well install it again. Is it helpdesk too? -

Lucky erm people! No air conditioning in this local authority I'm afraid It is boiling hot in here too but I can't open the doors or windows as that would let the pollen in! Catch 22! I blame my mediocre exam results when I was at school on hayfever. The exams came at the wrong time of year for me. Nothing worse than sitting in a boiling hot school hall with the sun blazing through the window onto your exam paper, sniffing my head off, running out of tissues and trying to answer trigonometry questions! Oh what fun! Isn't there some medical procedure available where they burn the lining of your nose off or something? Actually the receptors are in your head or something arent they? and the congestion is the narrowing of the airways or something? I dunno, all I do know is that I can hardlys see now!

Anyone know any companies in the north east? The company I used to use that charged £4 per item seem to have dissappeared!

Strange how this general forum is very IT related. I thought it would be more of a general discussion, unless I am in the wrong place. Anyway.. Today marks the official start of my hayfever season, usually I start earlier but today I forgot to take my antihistamines and I am dying here. I am trying to work on laptops and slobbering all over the keys. Anyone else find today is the worst for hayfever so far? Anyone find it really hard to concentrate at work for all the sneezing and nasel congestion? Think I need to invest in some benadryll and rhinolast! urgh *sniff*

Hi all! Does anyone have any clever asset management secrets they would like to share? I don't know about any othet techies but I am responsible for asset management (not in my job description!) This means preparing a yearly insurance inventory and keeping a database of ICT equipment etc. Now what I want to implement next year is a software setup similar to what ilient sysaid. Basically it is software that you have a database of machines and equipment (can be added automatically by scanning your domain) It keeps an inventory of each item, it's software, serial numbers etc. It is also an integrated web based help desk system so you can log any support issues along with that item in the database. You can see how useful this software is for those of us burdoned with this task. Does anyone else use this method? I am also interested to see if anyone uses barcode readers to swiftly read serial numbers etc? I am also considering assigning asset tags to all out equipment, so far I have used the serial number as the unique identifier but feel as the equipment in primary schools grows I need a new system to keep track of everything, including support queries. Any thought on this would be appreciated before I implement sysaid this summer.

I had D-Link 2100 APs and I found them useless but these were when they first came out. I think there has been several hardware revisions since. Upgrading the firmware on them didn't help much either. We were getting very intermittent signals with the D-Link. The 2100 AP is very much a small office/home AP in my opinion. It is great if you have the odd laptop connected but for laptop suites I got nothing but hassle. In future i would always go for the best APs possible at the time. I have some 5 year old cisco points and they have NEVER let me down yet. They are a bit slow now but they don't disconnect when things get tough, they work through it even if it i a bit on the slow side. As far as D-Link are concerned, I find they work much better if you use D-Link client adapters with the APs. I have had a lot of trouble with intel pro wireless client adapters and D-Link APs.

We got the call last week. Inspected tomorrow and wed. Eek! I am getting used to OFSTEDs though now. Over my 4 years in ICT Support at Primary schools this is my 4th Ofsted. Fun and joy to be had by all!

GPO's to make a school Network
starscream replied to nicholab's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I have been wondering this for a long time and wouldn't need to buy Ranger if there was some place to get the GPOs. That's all I am buying ranger for really, to make like easier and so that no area is left open. -
Displaying what the teacher is doing on all workstations
starscream replied to _Bat_'s topic in How do you do....it?
Does LANview also allow this but gives too much control to teachers if this is what you wanted to use it for. -

There is also the opensource italc. It has not been fully released yet and is still in testing but it seemed to work OK in vmware when I was testing it. Would be nice to know if anyone is using it in a working environment. -
Problem with a Drivestation - cannot get data off
starscream replied to sidewinder's topic in Hardware
if it is any help, I could not figure out a way to read the data on the hard drives without using the terastation itself. The file system is obscure. I think it is a variation of linux but I couldn't find anything to read it. You maye have more time but I seriously suggest ringing Buffalo. -
Problem with a Drivestation - cannot get data off
starscream replied to sidewinder's topic in Hardware
I had this exact same problem with a Buffalo Terastation, lost all connectivity and web interface and had data on there I dearly needed, oh and a hard drive went in it too.... luckily i had set it up in a raid2 config so the data was all there. I had an old terastation lying about so I opened them both up and swapped some of the hard drives, rebuilt it and plugged it in, i got the interface back and I recreated the shares and raid config and hey presto, all the data was there again. As soon as I could get to the data I backed it up, formatted the terastation and upgraded the firmware. First bet I would do is contact buffalo, their support is great, hopefully they will email you the latest firmware for the device that has not been released yet. They also have a lot of software at their disposal to help with this problem. Like you my first port of call was knoppix live but then I realised that nothing else on god's green earth uses the same file system! Sometimes I think we get carried away with our ability to chop pc's up and fix things when sometimes a call to the tech support of the item is all that is needed. I would trust buffalo can help you, they have helped me out of a few scenarios. One of the main reasons I buy buffalo is that I heard good things about the support, they were ringing me back with different solutions, I didn't have to chase anything up. Think their local support is in ireland. -
Ah, now see I never admit defeat, I see things I don't know or can't do as a challenge, rather than say I don't know I will run off and figure it out, I have only so far had 1 or 2 things I haven't been able to do and even then there are work arounds. I have made a few mistakes in my time but shhh, what people don't see people don't care about. ....overall of course I offer a professional value for money service

You get the holidays ? I've got the hump now..... Yeah but my monthly wage packet reflects this somewhat, but I think "so what, at least I get 13 weeks holiday a year!" It's not all good either as it means I can't take time off in term time and package holidays are well expensive during the school hols. The job suited me as I had been in full time education what with a-levels and uni and got the job straight from graduation. Will be weird when I progress in my career and start working the summer! OMG WHAT WILL I DO????!!! The best thing is that we only worklike 6 or 7 weeks in between holidays so it is a slog to each holiday but well worth it!

I was thinking the same thing when I was reading the FFS forum. I can understand how making slanderous remarks about companies is bad but I feel that truth and free speech is also important these days as we are told what to do so much by so many. Sometimes you have to tell it how it is. I bought my laptop from rockdirect.com because they have support forums rockforum.co.uk and you can discuss anything there, you can discuss all your problems and even staff from the company reply to every support thread. You can also see problems people have with their laptops and it can help you decide if you want to buy it or not. I like this open approach and like where the company come from, no problem has not been fixed by them. I guess I am more used to that sort of free speech truthful environment. I never mean to sound like I have a nasty tone but I do like to tell it how it is and I prefer people to be the same with me so everyone knows where they stand. I also subscribe to car forums where people are working on their car's and regularly post threads when feeling low and they seem like they're ranting but never seen this sort of a reply other than when people admit to racing on main roads. Nothing I said hurt anyone or a big company like Viglen and I don't think anything I can say or do would damage them in any way. Man I like to go off on one don't I?

Is her botty sore? My niece is the same age and has this same issue and going potty was painful for her. Sort of a combination of the poop being too big and the exit too small and there were tears, there were more details but I can't remember. I don't think the docs were too concerned. I think it was related to nappy rash and her age. She is a quite a little thing, too delecate! I bet bigger babies don't have the problem. I certainly didn't. Problem is kids are looked after too well now and too soft so things like this happen. It is distressing tho when they are in pain. Hope she is well soon man.

Put it this way bud, your learning curve with me more like this l than this / It is fun and you will learn so much! I work in primary schools so can't comment on the seconary scene. You will love some of the questions from staff! Also what I like to do when you have fixed something really simple is to make it sound like it was a huge job and get all complex on them. Vice versa, if you have a huge job that lasts forever and it does your head in you try to spend as little time as possible explaining it to them! Works both ways The best thing about primary is the holidays! It's the only reason I am still in this position after 3 and a half years!

Hi Folks, Has anyone had this problem I am experiencing on my home desktop computer: I have an OEM System Builder's version of Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition. It has been running fab since february. I activated it with no problems at this time too. I went to install Photostory3 last week and had to run the genuine validation tool before I could download it. After it ran it branded my machine 'Not Genuine' and direct x no longer works, which means none of my games work, there is a "This copy of windows is not genuine" notice on the desktop and pops up now and again. The strangest thing is when I try to run the validation tool again it says windows is not activated and must be activated first. My computer says windows is activated. And I can activate windows OK again but the validation tool won't work as it still says it is not activated. I have contacted Microsoft and been assigned a support rep but it is one of these 1 email correspondence per day things so it has been nearly a week already of pointless emails back and forth. Has anyone else suffered this before and if you got it fixed how? I think MS are going to send me a new Product Key but I don't think it iwll work, they sent me one today but it was for 32bit. My only guess is that perhaps my product key has been cloned but that does not explain how my windows still activates?

Referring back to my original post, I posted my bad experiences in the bad experience forum, I can't see how that is a problem. Yes I did say how I felt about Viglen and their equipment but I also gave my evidence I did not just come out and say "DON'T BUY VIGLEN". If I can't tell the truth then what can I do? As for my tone. I don't feel anyone has the right to say that a post has a 'tone' I did not flame, I did not swear, I did not use caps and other than the word 'tosh' I think I used fairly good netiquette. I can understand this reaction if I had been very slanderous or not explained my feelings but either way, if I have had bad experiences and they upset me I will say so. No point in saying something is good and not that bad when in my opinion it is not. Viglen could have prevented this post by dealing with our problem. Perhaps it was just an incompetency on behalf of each individual party that dealt (or didn't) with the issues. Perhaps I didn't dedicate enough time to pushing them. I trust people would draw their own conclusions from this. I am finding my feet in this forum and I am a regular in many forums online and never once have I had this sort of reaction to a post, hence why I keep replying in length to this thread. I have posted in moods, under stress and have used words I shouldn't in the past but never been slated like this before. I would also have hoped that given the level of poor support we have been given by Viglen that this is all deserved. I can't stress this enough. Also, the last thing I would talk about down the pub is my dislike of Viglen. Had I only dealt with one area of Viglen then I would not have been able to make the comments that I did but because I have used all they have to offer: Installation Engineers, Support Line, Support Engineer, IWB Installation, Sub Contractors, Account Managers, Customer Support... They all let me and our school down. My own senior management's lack of enthusiasm to follow the issues up were just as bad but Viglen should not need further action in order to right their wrongs. ...lets finish on a high note. Viglen training is brilliant! (in my opinion) I will not be so relaxed when posting in future and will use better netiquette across all my forum and this was quite an upset.
