  1. I know that there threads about the pros and cons of each, but I can't find a rough estimate as to which is generally preferred in a school environment. So I thought I'd make a poll for other undecided techies. So which version are you using?
  2. Other than the shark fin, one other thing I don't like is how wide the floor is behind the side pods. It's mostly notable from aerial shots. It just doesn't look right, as if it's been accidentally left on.
  3. Hmm, OK. Our LUN is on an 18-month old HP SAN and no other SAN or devices have been using for storage. If I need to unmap/unmount the LUN, what effect will that have on our live servers that are stored on it? Will I then be able to re-map it without any issues?
  4. Unfortunately there are no snapshots. There is one 'Zombie', though that is for a different VM on a different LUN.
  5. Would a VM move be similar to a clone? I selected the option 'Remove from the Virtual Machine and Delete Files from Disk' Tried that, but it still hasn't shown the reduction in size. Cheers, I'll get RVTools now. The server's Virtual HDDs appear to be Thick Provisioned, including the one I deleted. However the LUN itself appears to be Thin Provisioned, though I can't see where to check this. I've moved the VM to a slower LUN - the original LUN only showed a reduction in the VM's newer lower size (only reduced by ~200GB) and still isn't showing the reduction of the >1TB change. I'm in the process of moving it back to the faster LUN.
  6. One of our file servers has the 60GB OS disk and also a 2TB disk for data, which only has 100GB in use. We are running low on space on the datastore, so I have created a 150GB disk and copied the data across from the 2TB disk. I have checked the data and its transferred fine, so the disk and its contents have been deleted and removed from the VM in vSphere. However, that 1.85TB of free space has not been reclaimed - infact we are now in a worse situation free space wise on the datastore. So the server is storing the OS disk in SERVER/SERVER.vmdk and the data disk in SERVER/SERVER_1.vmdk. When browse the datastore, the file sizes of the vmdk's match those configured in the server's settings. I cannot figure out how to reclaim that space. From what I can tell, the LUN is thin-provisioned. Any advice?
  7. Yeah, I am liking that sort of design. I really got into F1 in the early 2000's, when imo, the cars looked really good being small and low. They just looked fast...but then with the introduction of the higher rear wing, the wider front wing and the longer nose...they started to look more cumbersome and slower. It really did put me off the designs. I'd love to see Red Bull's design, as I think their matted paint last year looked amazing.
  8. An image for the Williams FW40 has been leaked: Revealed: First images of 2017 Williams F1 car
  9. No, Server 2012 R2. We're using transparent proxy and all other updates download and deploy fine, it's just specifically this one update. Just to be sure though, I've followed those steps and set our manual proxy settings and that also didn't work. Cheers, I'll give that a go later today. Edit; @Wardrop That worked, so thanks for the info.
  10. I'm having issues when SCCM is attempting to download KB3172989 from the Software Update Point. I've come across a few articles online, but they either don't work, or are for an older version of SCCM. We're currently running SCCM 1610 and so far I've found: Error log located in %temp%: Download destination = \\server\share$\Software Updates\Server 2016\816e0e9f-b4c7-4412-b8d5-8aa0b051be7d.1\Windows10.0-KB3172989-x64.cab . Due to this error, it is downloading the two preceding updates, however stopping at the fail, meaning no later updates are being downloaded. So far I've tried: Applying this patch: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/configurationmgr/2016/01/28/hotfix-windows-10-upgrades-are-not-downloaded-in-system-center-configuration-manager-1511/ but it is only applicable to 1511. I've tried manually downloading the .cab from http://wsus.ds.download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/secu/2016/07/windows10.0-kb3172989-x64_b8a00e99c1fddf0580b538636b9da666952f23dc.cab and manually placing destination folder in SCCM's Software Updates, in hope that SCCM would detect it and move on to the next update. I've also tried moving the .cab into the %temp% folder, in hope that it would also be detected. I've tried turning off 'Protected Mode' in IE for the Internet zone while the download is occurring. I'm out of ideas and patience with this. If MS released a hotfix for it for 1511, why wasn't it incorporated into later releases?!
  11. We don't have this problem - We are however using transparent proxy, so actual proxy details aren't set - only other specific settings. I'll see if I can set up test accounts using manual proxy settings and seeing if I can replicate your issue.
  12. We currently redirect our users' home folders, including Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Videos, etc to: \\studentserver\share$\Intake17\17STest\Documents So this means that the Downloads folder is redirected into: \\studentserver\share$\Intake17\Documents\Downloads However, I've noticed that the Quick Access locations are slightly different. For example, the Downloads in Quick Access location is pointing to: \\studentserver\share$\Intake17\17STest\Downloads Despite its only a small difference, it means that there are two locations in use here, which is causing confusion. The folder redirection was configured by a third party contractor, when they designed our new network and AD. Ideally, I'd prefer not to change the folder redirection options, but change the Quick Access locations. Is this possible using GP?
  13. Thanks for that. I've just checked and I've already set that key. I'll have to check whether its being overwritten at any point.
  14. I have been able to take ownership of registry keys using GP for another task I was working on last week. The settings were located in Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Registry From here, I was able to Add the key by browsing for it and then the security permissions dialogue box appeared. I took a screenshot of the existing permisisons and entered 'Advanced'. The owner stated 'Unable to display current owner', so I changed it to SYSTEM in my case and I also pressed 'Enable inheritance'. This removed all security entries from the key, so I manually added them back in, with the addition of SYSTEM and Administrators to have full access. That allowed me then to use GPP to change the value of the registry key.
  15. The start menu is mostly working now, however still having issues with some tiles: This PC - Leaves a blank space (Using File Explorer works, but this loads up Quick Access as default, instead of This PC) Outlook - Leaves a blank space, despite the GUID/CLSID and rest of the path being correct Devices and Printers - Leaves a blank space I did come across this, but haven't checked it out yet: https://shauncassells.wordpress.com/2015/09/28/windows-10-event-10016-fix-the-application-specific-permission-settings-do-not-grant-local-activation-permission-for-the-com-server-application-with-clsid-d63b10c5-bb46-4990-a94f-e40b9d520160-and-a/
  16. What about for the many schools who don't use Smoothwall?
  17. I saw that earlier when I Google, but when I tried it, it didn't work. It's been a long day, I might take another look tomorrow.
  18. Ah OK, more testing it is then. By chance, do you know how to find out the 'DesktopApplicationID' for applications I have installed?
  19. Excellent, this has made them appear! I need to do more testing and whatnot before I can tick the Start Layout off my list. I did however have a could of 'Runtime Broker - Operation Aborted' errors, though I'm not sure if that's caused by this change. I'll need to do some investigating.
  20. Unfortunately that didn't work . It also leaves a blank space like the others.
  21. The only apps I want to be pinned are: IE Chrome Word 2016 Excel 2016 Powerpoint 2016 Publisher 2016 Access 2016 File Explorer Snipping Tool Calculator So far I've got all of them to show up EXCEPT the Office apps. They're just leaving blank spaces where the icons ought to be. So far I've tried: (Using Notepad++) Using the shortcut location of: "%ALLUSERPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Word 2016.lnk" Using the shortcut location of: "%PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Word 2016.lnk" Using the shortcut location of: "\\students\startmenu$\Office\Word 2016.lnk" (This is where the Start Menu items are located, which work flawlessly, so it shouldn't be a permissions issue) Using the shortcut location of: "\\students\StartLayout$\Office\Word 2016.lnk" Removing the line from from the xml file as that apparently can cause other issues None of the above worked and I'm a little stumped at this point.
  22. I'm not after removing the search function...I just want to limit it to searching the redirected Start Menu, Desktop and Home Folder. For example, we have shortcuts for Word in both the redirected start menu and desktop, but when I search for 'Word' using Windows 10's start menu search feature...it doesn't find it. This works without issues on Windows 8.1. I've also found that despite we have locked down student access to the likes of administrative tools, I can still search for 'mmc' and bring up various admin tools. Some are blocked on run, like Disk Manager, but some still run, like Task Scheduler. Is there any way that I can limit the search locations?
  23. We are currently testing Windows 10 Education 1607 and I'm finding that my newly imaged machine is appearing in the correct collections within SCCM, however is not downloading the client machine policy. For example, the client machine policy we have in place for workstations includes 'Use the new Software Center', which makes it obvious when it isn't downloading the new machine policy. I also have a a number of 'base software' deployed to one of the collections the machine lands in - and these are not installing. Its as if the Configuration Client on the machine is not talking correctly with the SCCM server, despite the logs I've checked so far show no connection issues. We also have SCEP deployed, however this machine is also not picking up these policies - evident when entering the 'Windows Defender' settings on the client. It should say that the settings are managed by the system administrator, but it doesn't say anything of the sort, and allows me to edit the settings. However, if I trigger a manual policy download from the SCCM console - the client then receives the policy, applies them, including the new system center and also starts the application deployment. Though this isn't ideal - ideally I'd like it to be automated. I imaged a machine yesterday at 3pm - and according to my colleague, by 5pm it still had not applied any policies. However, when I came in this morning - it had applied the policies and installed the applications. I then re-imaged the machine this morning, and it applied the policies straight away, and installed the applications. I have re-imaged the machine again - and now it is not receiving the policies or application deployments. My Task Sequence has this command line as the last task to run to download the policy after configuration manager has installed: WMIC /namespace:\\root\ccm path sms_client CALL TriggerSchedule "{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000022}" /NOINTERACTIVE Can anybody help shed some light? Edit: Approximately one hour after the machine was imaged, the client downloaded the policy and installed the software without any interaction from me. This coincides with the default 1 hour evaluation that configuration manager has. I have tested this before however, and a machine has been on in excess of 24 hours after re-imaging and still not policy download or software installation. I'll be doing some more testing.
  24. Cheers. One other question; I have a collection for all our Windows x clients. For OS Software Updates, is it worth just using this one collection? Or should I create a duplicate collection specifically for Software Updates? I'd prefer to avoid duplicating my collections, but don't want to risk breaking or effecting our main one. I hope that makes sense.
