Hi, I don;t know if this is the right forum, but.. I am going to put some old computer bits on display and explain what they are, so I just wondered if you knew any good places that explained what each bit does at primary level (Y5/6)? I have tried Sparklebox but it just has signs saying keyboard, mouse etc. Basically it will have the following nailed/stuck to the wall and a brief explanation : Processor Hard Disk Network Card Motherboard Keyboard Mouse Graphics Card CD ROM Drive etc.

Hi there, We have Communicate in Print installed throughout the school and we have just received six CDs containing updated Makaton symbols. All each CD does is copy the symbols/signs in to a folder on the local machine ie c:\wws2000\graphics . The WWS2000 is from Writing with Symbols which we also have installed. The easiest way I have found to install it on all machines, is to get staff to run a bat file from a shared drive, the batch file does this: md "C:\wws2000\graphics\Makaton Signs" md "C:\wws2000\graphics\Makaton Symbols" xcopy "w:\makaton\makaton symbols" "c:\wws2000\graphics\makaton symbols" /s xcopy "w:\makaton\makaton signs" "c:\wws2000\graphics\makaton signs" /s xcopy "w:\makaton\wordlist" "c:\wws2000work\wordlist" /s /y msg "%username%" Makaton Signs 2007/8 has been installed. msg "%username%" Please select Makaton 2007 All Signs or Symbols from the available wordlists. It takes about 5 mins and copies 20,000 symbols across! I just wondered if anyone would have a better way of doing this? I suppose I could run it as a start up script, but it would take 5 minutes to run.

I am experiementing with an MSI I made of it using Wininstall LE, so far it installs fine when installed manually, but doesn't work when deployed via GPO.

Just wondered if anyone has been given Jolly Phonics to install on the network. Firstly there is no MSI and it wont run off a network share, and finally it only works if each user runs it once with the CD in first. I thought I had seen the last of this type of software years ago! Here is the reply from them after the Business Manager sent them an email (below): > Thank you for your email and sorry for the delay in responding to you. > > I am disappointed to hear that you are having problems with the CD-ROM. > > There could be two possible reasons: > > 1. I'm afraid for security reasons, the software has to be validated locally in each machine by running the software for the first time with the disc in the drive. Once this is done the disc is no longer required in the drive and the games can be accessed. I appreciate that this may not be an ideal situation, especially if the software has to be installed of large numbers of pc's at a school site. We are looking at ways to resolve this issue for the future. > > 2. If the school has multiple users on each computer, they may be asked to insert the disc even though the software has been installed and validated in the computer. If this is the case we are able to provide fix which can be downloaded from our ftp site. Please let me know and I can provide details. > > Kind Regards, > > xxxxxx On 17 Sep 2009, at 10:46, XXXXXXX wrote: > > > Dear Sir/Madam, > > We had a delivery this morning of our order number xxxxxx - Jolly phonics for the whiteboard. > Our IT technician had begun to load it onto the schools machines and found that when he tried to start the program it required the discs. > If we are paying for a site licence shouldn't the program be able to work on more than one computer simultaneously? > If it will only work on one computer and have to have the discs then can we only pay for one licence instead of a site licence? > > Let me know what you think, > > xxxxxx > Bursar

HP LaserJet P2055DN's going offline and not responding

Before I left I deleted the main users profile, rebooted and logged in again (ie to create local profile again) and it worked ok, so far... -
HP LaserJet P2055DN's going offline and not responding
danielson81 replied to flyinghaggis's topic in Hardware
We have one of these in the school office running via USB, it worked fine on an old SP2 computer, however they have just had new computers in the office and it works for about an hour then either disappears or fails every print! This after a uninstall, reboot, reinstall etc. The only major difference I can find is that this PC has SP3 on it, whereas the old one doesn't. I have tried the universal drivers as well, but to no avail. -
If its any help it can be deployed quite easily. There is an MSI extracted to a folder under c:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings\ . Works fine, tried it on a few PCs. Will obviously wait for licencing outcome before deploying across the network.

Computer to Pupil ratios - fact or fiction?
danielson81 replied to heybatesy's topic in General Chat
Is there somewhere on the BECTA website that actually states the recommended ratios for Primary Schools? Our current ratio is 1:5.5 however around 19 of them old Elonex's which I obviously want to replace. The school don't mind replacing them but they want some sort of proof that we are keeping within recommended guidelines. Without the new machines our ratio would become 1:7.15 -
I've got the installer for Elementary version, if its any use.

Hi, We have two new (well been in a cupboard for 18 months!) and sealed Lexmark Optra Coating Rolls. The printer died before we could install them. Are they any use for anyone? A contribution towards postage would be appreciated (£8) or free collection. School is in Brighton. Full spec here: 0010E0044 Lexmark Optra C710 Coating Roll (Incl. in 0010E0043) (15K)

Thanks, I think I will just tell them to get another projector.
-
Thanks, its the wrong way round.
-
Thanks, looks like its going to have to be a 5m Power lead and pulling up all the cable trunking! Or a new projector?
-
Hi there, Does anyone know if its possible to convert a Figure of 8 plug (IEC C7) to a Kettle Lead type plug (IEC C13). I ask as one of our projectors has failed, and it has a figure of 8 lead. We have a spare projector, but it requires a kettle lead. So instead of pulling out all the cables I wondered if there was a way to do this. Previously we have used similar converters from Maplin to convert a Figure of 8 to a clover leaf. However I can;t find any on the internet, so I am assuming its not possible (or even safe!).

Acer Travelmate 270 CD Drive - How to remove!
danielson81 replied to danielson81's topic in Hardware
Thanks! Worked a treat! Can't believe I didn't notice a screw labelled CD! -
Hi there, I have two Travelmate Laptops, one is dead the other works fine apart from the CD/DVD Rom drive. I am trying to salvage the dead laptops CD drive and put it on the new one. Does anyone know how to remove the drive from the laptop? I have unscrewed every screw I can see and it still won't budge. I dont want to apply too much force in case I break it. I have managed to remove the hard disk and memory quite easily. Any help appreciated!

Hi, Can anyone recommend (free?) a Duplicate file finder that can export the results? I have tried Easy Duplicate Finder and although it finds duplicate files, it thinks a duplicate file is any other file with the same size, so in the results it reports lots of folders containing photos etc! Also the results export file is just a list of directory paths. Eg: D:\users\resources\Year 6\Photos 2008-09\Evacuation Day\P9290955.JPG D:\users\resources\Year 6\Photos 2008-09\Evacuation Day\P9290956.JPG D:\users\resources\Year 6\Photos 2008-09\Evacuation Day\P9290957.JPG D:\users\resources\Year 6\Photos 2008-09\Evacuation Day\P9290958.JPG D:\users\resources\Year 6\Photos 2008-09\Evacuation Day\P9290959.JPG D:\users\resources\Year 6\Photos 2008-09\Evacuation Day\P9290960.JPG Basically I want to give something easy to understand to the head so she can educate her staff! The LEA is demanding we pay more for our off site backup as we have reached our 200GB limit! I saw this post: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/downloads/4212-duplicate-file-finder.html but the link given went to some adware site. Edit: can be found here: http://www.tucows.com/preview/373411 Daniel

With versions 2.5 and 2.6 you could install it on a shared drive and point shortcuts to the drive, and that was it. Version 3.0 doesn't seem to support this idea! However I install it it sticks the database in c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\fsp ! So on the server I imported all the names etc, and when the workstations access eyfsp.exe they think there is no data! So if you need to run it on several PCs (ie reception classes and the office!) it is not possible! I have tried installing it to: \\server\eyeprofile and pointing the shortcut to: \\server\eyeprofile\FSP\Version3\eyfsp.exe and d:\staff_shared\eyeprofile (on the server) and pointing the shortcut to: t:\eyeprofile\FSP\Version3\eyfsp.exe (mapped drive) and even tried pointing the shortuct to \\server\d$\staff_shared\eyeprofile etc. I have also tried telling it to start in \\server01\fsp - which is the FSP app data folder under All Users on the server. Or maybe there is something I missed out? Edit: Found this in the E-profile manual: The eyeProfile cannot be supported on network machines due to their complexity and variety. It will probably work on a well organised network in single-user mode only and with the support of an ICT technician. Ideally to the eyeProfile should be used on a standalone machine. :(

Hi there, Not sure what forum to post this in, but saw other helpdesk based posts here so thought I would try here. Can anyone recommend a free (or <£100) helpdesk style package that can be used by the caretaker to receive requests and respond to them. I have tried a few, but the school would like one where the user just puts in their email address and clicks submit without the need to logon every time. For ICT requests we use Spiceworks which has been working fine for over a year, however we only have one server so can't install it elsewhere. The Business Manager wasn't happy having another PC on 24/7 just for this! Of course you may be asking isn't this a bit much for a primary school? Well after being able to see all my ICT requests via Spiceworks reports, they want to see what the caretaker is doing! Stasi School! Thanks, Dan

its slow here too! I think some of the resources that you previsouly had to pay for require the toolbar to be installed.

Hi there, Has anyone been asked by teachers to install Sparklebox Toolbar on to machines? They want is because you need it to get "free" resources off Sparklebox now. I tried installing it and looking for MSI files in the temp folder, but only a few random files appeared. To save me going round 80PCs in 4 schools, I am thinking of giving them a temp login name to install it, that runs the setup automatically and logs them off in 5 mins if they dont log off.
-
Heres one I made earlier... well it extracted in to a temp folder when I ran the exe! Deployed it to four of my schools and it works fine on all of them!Image Resizer Powertoy for Windows XP.zip

We use the an MSI for smartboard 9.5, we copied it from a temp directory it created when installed normally and it works fine. Our gallery is on a network share, we added this startup script to the same GPO: Dim WSHShell, RegLocate, RegLocate1 Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") On Error Resume Next RegLocate = "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SMART Technologies Inc.\Gallery\TeamContent\gallery.smarttech.com\ImsManifestXml" WSHShell.RegWrite RegLocate,"w:\smartgallery\imsmanifest.xml","REG_SZ" ' Change w:\smartgallery to the path you have installed the gallery WScript.Quit ' Tells the script to stop and exit.
