  1. Nope do not use Sophos
  2. I have looked at the eventviewer on a machine and it is generating event ID 1217 Execution of GPO scripts has timed out and have been terminated. Event ID 1085 The Group Policy client-side extension Security failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension. Event ID 1202 Security policies were propagated with warning. 0x4b8 : An extended error has occurred. For best results in resolving this event, log on with a non-administrative account and search http://support.microsoft.com for "Troubleshooting Event 1202' Ive not had chance to look at any other sites other then eventID.net which does not give away too much. Time to carry on plodding through sites to find a solution. Unless anyone else knows !! I have read somewhere that it may be group policy corruption. I hope not!!
  3. Must have been your expert cleaning last time round. Glad to hear to there were no porblems. Well for the moment anyway
  4. WE have two policies one for staff and one for students. No staff have been complaining about slow log in times (other than the time it takes the kids to log in) Dont know much about the way the GP is set up as it was all set up by my predacessor and I have not really had the time to look through how it was set up . He did nt document anything either which makes it all the more annoying. As for the question of do I have thje same issue with SP1 as well and SP2. I dont know as I have not put any SP1 machines in place for the student to use. Do you have roaming profiles? Yes Is your server 2000 or 2003? We have one of each but the main one is a 2000 server. We are in the process of migrating to the new server. So what clients do you have? and they log in in less time?? 2000 machines appear to be slightly quicker but overall it would appear there is no difference. Do you have scripts running as well - can you test the logon speed bypassing them? The only ones we use are to map printers and map drives. I will try disabling the login script for the students and test. Will post the results. I tried the DNS entry on the client machine. It did make a slight difference but it is still far to long. Thanks for the suggestions
  5. I have a big issue here that it takes ages (in paticualr win xp SP 2)machnies to log in to the network. There is sufficiant network capacity bandwidth and the server is of a good spec. If I log in with an admin account its quick. I think it may be something to do with GP but dont really know where to start looking to resolve the problem. I would appreciate any pointers from anyone else who has had the same problem and managed to resolve it. Even if it is not the solution its somthing to bear in mind. It does this every time you log in so its not a cold boot issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated and there may be a prize for the one who sorts it for me :-)
  6. WE use a VBS script. Specifies a specific printer based on the room and machine name. Machine name a1-01-XX (xx being the machine number in room A1-01) To see the properly better paste in to notepad. rem Printer Mapping Script Const NetworkMapped = "\\" On Error Resume Next Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") Set colPrinters = objNetwork.EnumPrinterConnections For i = 0 to colPrinters.Count -1 Step 2 strPrinterName = colPrinters.Item(i) strPrinterUNC = colPrinters.Item (i + 1) If Left(strPrinterUNC,2) = NetworkMapped Then objNetwork.RemovePrinterConnection(strPrinterUNC) Next 'And now to map the required printers 'Capture the Computer name, take the first 5 characters to determine the classroom 'Then map the relevant printers for that classroom strComputerName = Left(objNetwork.ComputerName, 5) Select Case strComputerName Case "A1-01" bjNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\servername\printername" objNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\servername\printername" End Select If you need add more insert more lines add them in before the end select command. The number 5 specifies the number of characters to use from the start of the name. So 3 would pick up in our case "A1-" Hope this helps
  7. Kids tend not to have paper clips on them at this school. If it easnt easy for them then they wont bother. Putting somthing in to release the drawer is too much hassle.
  8. We have the same problem here. One thing we have done here is just take the power cable out of the back o fthe CD rom drive. Stops them being able to open the drives and they still act a blanking plate. Bit of an expensive solution I know but better than memory being knicked. Most of the drives we have got recently are cogs inside rather than bands but I wonder how long it will be befoer they stop working!!
  9. How do you guys keep track of your "to do list". We use outlook task list and I find it rather basic and rather annoying having used some of the industry call loggin tools. Does anyone know a free (or cheap) logging system where it can be viewed by all but not modifed. The big problem we have here is everyone would like to know what jobs we have got to do and the progress on their call. It would be less stressful for us if it was so basic people could submit thier own jobs to us without having to contact us. Somthing like a baisc form. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatfully received as this would appear to be a minor issue for some but is a big issue for me.
  10. We have had nearly 70 NEC VL5 machines installed at school. just over half were bought to replace very old teachers machines. The spec was slightly modified for the teachers DVD burners and 512 MB of ram but not one has failed yet. The great thing with these is they come with Y power cables. So 1 plug power for PC and Monitor. These worked out cheaper then going to dell. All PCs come with onsite warrenty and are AMD XP 2600 machines. Fantastic Deal if you ask me. Would go back providing they at the right price again next time.
  11. I have read bad things of Novatech. Generic parts etc. I hear that the motheboards are bought in bulk and when they run out of them it can be hard to replace if they fail under warranty. http://www.evesham.com offer the same for a little more but have a much better reputation.
  12. A placstic science pipet is whats used here . You can force the solvent through when you have got a tight seal on the spike that pierces the cartridge. Put some absorbant paper under it to catch drips. The only problem is if air gets trapped, one week later you will be doing the same thing all over again. When costing take into account the time spent cleaning the heads. for eg £10 per hour for an 8 hr day. Its £80. So 3 days of work which to be honest it will take you that to do 8 printers is the cost of 1 HP Laser. A cartridge will last for approx 200 pages if that. A laser cartridge is 4000 pages. Factor in 20 cartridges at £5 each thats £100. Laser cartridge is £45 ish. So by one cycle of cartridges its has payed for itself. Remeber it will come witch cartridged that do about 2000 pages to start. Hope this helps.

    Netware

how about wetware. no that isnt a typo!!
  14. We've been slowly phasing out Inkjets all together due to the fact that we had 6 Epson 880s get so clogged that even with the above techniques cleaning failed. My tip is to go for a laser. They cost about the same as a good business inkjet and the advantage is no wastage of ink and no drying up. Overall the average cost of running one is about the same as an inkjet. Even the colour ones. HP 2550 colour lasers start about the £250 mark with the network option Who needs to throw printers them when you have 3 stories to drop one (or all of them from :-)
