if there is an interuption and the icons go missing right button click the desktop and select refresh. they will reappear. As for wsus it will work fine over wireless but will be slow if you are doing lots of them at a time. If you are scheduling them you will need to make suer they will be turned at at the time the schedule will run. Hope this info helps.

AVS media Converter gets my vote. You can actually select the selection you want and file type you want to output to and the type of media you want to use it for (ipod, mp4 player etc etc.) No DVD pre ripping, straight from the disk also useful for compressing video files. I looked for ages for a solution for creating videos for our video delivery system here and found this is the easiest and the one that required the least ammount of steps for the desired outcome.

This one is an Irise only installtion in the atrium of a tech dept. It works really well and gives us another IT suite in an area which we didnt think we could use as an IT suite. As for the power for the machines. I beleive under new cableing regs you can only run 8 PCs on a ring main before it trips. We dont have any tripping issues. All the cables are integrated into the desk so they are out of site and out of the way. As for powering on the machines we have a policy for wake on lan for startup and a shutdown script in the evening. The power buttons rarely get pressed !!

No not really, I would agree with your point if you are only producing a small number of desks yourself. I desk are not. Therefore the maintenance on this piece of kit this has to be built into the costs. With a CNC though it means they are all identical and will slot togther. Each desk shape can be pre programmed in therefore no marking out time, before you even think about cutting. Would you be able to knock out about 8-10 desktops per hour for example. This gives all the air chanels under the desk all the screw holes exactly for the frames and the jigsaw piece ends that will fit exaclty each time every time with no messing around. As for the suface it is already like that when they cut it. The surface is not applied later on. The CNC also give a high level of finish, clean crisp edges this then placed in an edge bander to give an unexposed edge. I would suggest Torledo that you go and have a look at an I-desk install before passing judgement. Or attend Bett next year and I will be happy to meet up for a coffee on the Idesk stand to discuss further. Compare it to a bespoke fitting company install and see the difference/benifits/quality etc.

All I desks are made with a 26mm moisture resistant MDF with a melomime finish with edging strip. This is machined on CNC machines. The legs and chassis are powder coated. Add that to the fact that they come and install the desks think of the time saving alone on producing it. Also I have not seen an "inhouse solution" that is of the grade you are proposing. Add in the maintenance of a £500,000 CNC machine and its milling bits I can see that the solution is very reasonable. As for the post about cramming everything into a small case. There is more space inside one of these cases than in a laptop or for example or a HP DC7700 DC7900. We have had no problems with ours and I did speak to other people who have had Idesk installs done, one of which had done an in house upgrade. The components inside are standard PC parts. Nothing bespoke about them except the case that it sits in. The furniture stays the same. Specification wise Intel Dual Core e5200 2x 2.5 2M 800MHz 45nm Hard Drive 160GB SATA2 Memory 2GB DDR 2 Ram 800Mhz Optical Drive - CD-Writer / DVD Reader "Storage Card Reader 3.5"" Internal" As for some of the people who are wanting a solution of a higher spec or want to do major graphics rendering etc etc dont be cheap skates spend the £££ on the spec. Tell I desk what you want and they can accomodate with a higher spec motherboard (the motherboards in ours are ASUS) or they can fit a graphics card solution. You tell them what you want they will supply a solution. As has been said before you get what you pay for. They can provide a Mac solution although this is something we are currently not entertaining here. On the IRise solution on space for legs there is plenty or room. As I have said if you want to have a look at a solution contact Steve and he may be able to arrange a viewing at a school near you. The ISIS desk incroaches on space underneath the desk. Having tried the ISIS desk im only 5'7 I imediatly commented on the lack of space underneath we have some students well over 6' here. This was also the case for a few other we looked at. Hi all, We have been using I desk here for nearly 2 years. We now have 2 full IT suites of 30 machines, each with 18 machines using the I-Desk solution and then 12 with the I-Rise solution. The first classroom we spent ages looking for a solution and we could not find anything better for the solution we wanted. We have also got 2 classrooms with the I desk basic as we had already purchased machines and we could not replace them with an I-Desk computer solution. These are the same size as an I desk but the PC sits on top rather than inside the desk. This solution is not as neat as the cables are still exposed but it can give you such a saving on space. We have also just placed an order for a solution to go into our technology atrium. Its an I rise consisting of 23 seats. This was the best solution for a dept which needed and additional IT suite but the school did not have the space for it anywhere else. The desk is going to incorporate a pillar into the design. We are waiting on our next allocation of money to get some of our other rooms done in the same way and maybe take advantage of some of the alternative shapes, wavey lines, curves, hexagon shapes etc. The perception from staff is that it give a fresh clean and more spacious environment in which students are much more relaxed primarily because there is much more space to move around the classroom. Also they know what if something is not working it generally a problem the IT dept need to deal with as nothing can be disconnected. The best thing from a network managers point of view is that they come and do the installation for you. The amount of time its saved me on setup time and support it has been a god send to say the least. I have not dealt with any vandalism (not that its a major issues here) on these rooms but I have in other areas. If you can plan ahead an build an image in advance they will pre image the machines before installation. The rooms are well received by the students as they do have WOW factor especially in the rooms with the I-Rise sections. On a final note our account manager Steve Morgan has even attended site to see how the installations are going, and on occasions assist with the installations. I don’t know of any account managers that would do that !! If anyone wants to come and have look you are more than welcome.

Really sorry if this has been discussed before but I cant seem to find anything that will do this and Im sure there is a way of doing this. I have a VHS video tape which has about 6 programs on it. Each program varies in length some 30mins some are 45 mins for example. Is there a way to put the whole tape onto the computer (I know how to do this bit), import the video file into a program, select the points where the program starts, then where the program finishes, then mark the next one in the same way etc etc, then export all the video files in one hit. So you would get for example a folder with the big video file in it then 6 files smaller in size, 1 for each program. I dont mind if it takes ages to export the files, I just want to spend say 20 mins putting the markers in then leave it doing it, over night for example. I know a long way of doing it, but that involves rendering each program in turn, but its taking me ages. I have AVS media tools, fab program for converting stuff in batch, but cant seem to find a way of doing it in that program, and premier pro CS3. I dont mind buying another program to do it as long as it supports lots of file formats. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

We were looking to make a room dual use with a conference style desk in the middle. We also needed the room to have 30 machines. We spent ages looking around at different solutions and we couldnt find one better than I desk. Thanks all for youre suggestions. I have tried the VBS route and it did not work. I did this last night as a last ditch attempt at killing the dam thing. I have added the \persistant:no swith in to the script but the drives still remain mapped. I have a funny feeling this needed to be run the first time the script was used when people logged in. Man so frustrating. When will people invent the button which says just F****N work!!

Right. I have worked out if I delete the NTUSER.DAT file the problem goes away apart from the problem that it also removed god dam outlook profile. Any other suggestions anyone. Thanks

I am in the throws of finishing a network migration to some new servers as our old one is quite frankly knackered. I have moved various different areas to different servers and I am now trying to get the logon script to map to the new locations. Does anyone know how to set quotas on folders rather than disks. I have a need to implement a new area for certain students to save files for a subject. This needs to be seperate from all the other areas that they use. It needs to be a dedicated 50 MB in size. I dont want to move lots of other files around to be able to do this. Please help me !!

I have found that not restricting access to the connections tab and the lan settings in GPO the teacher can access this area and just put the tick ni the box or remove it. Works for us here though teachers to winge a little about doing that.

There call centres are in the Netherlands too. As it is a dutch company. Its just like dealing with maxtor in Ireland. Call reference is just the serial number of the PC. No random pieces of paper flying around with reference numbers. Brilliant Idea No problems here.

Had our first failure and Thursday. HDD drive went bang. Would be on the bosses PC wouldnt it. Typical. Call logged and engineer was with us first thing friday morning. Super service on the warrenty side too!!!

Working in the hospital was a nightmare. Fortunatly there were a lot of fail safes put in place clustered servers for the critical systems and a couple of backup switches in the store just in case one went down. Plus one big fat genny whch could run all the servers and dumb terminals as well as theatre and all the other machines. All PCs had to be turned off though in non critcal areas. Must say it was fun but an adsolute nightmare when the main switch failed!!

HP 8500 good and robust. No problems with it a co I used to support. Dont touch Kyocera. I used to work in a hospital and we bined most of them after 12 months cos they just kept on failing. Spent more time loggin calls to get them fixed than I did fixing things. Very bad news. May be worth looking at Tally, got one in at the hospital gave it to the admin dept for all thier printing and it never broke. Was a little expensive. Good hunting

Everytime a print job is submitted to the Hp 2300 and 1100 printers on the network it always prints and extra page. I dont care why it does it but how can I stop it. Please help save trees. Ta

Nothing is wrong with Sophos. Our LEA pays for ours from Network Associates. Quite nice of them really. We find NA works here but my preference is sophos on large networks. If we had to change that would be my first choice.
