I'd be interested to read your findings - particularly in the way you get the Mandatory Profiles to work successfully for multiple users accessing the same machines and the logon speeds... Any Registry Tweaks you may need to do and removal of built in apps to help speed logons

I think - From sitting on the MicroBit Workshop at Bett - for the pins to work you also have to connect to ground - so if you set something to activate on Pin 1 - Touch Pin1 and Ground with your fingers

Thanks all for the feedback so far - how are you finding managing roaming profiles for potentially 1000's of users? How much storage space are you needing for the profiles? - I'd much rather have just the one mandatory profile for all users - but things no longer work correctly in this type of setup to how they worked in previous versions of Windows. The App creation for each new user at logon is a real pain in the backside and slows things down!

Thanks timbo343 - what sort of profiles are you currently using with your users? I find it hard to believe that there appears to be NO tools to support deployment in Education Environments - I had hope when I saw Windows 10 Education, that they finally developed an O/S specially for us, but it was not to be... I've asked the question, what is best practice to setting up Windows 10 in a shared classroom, profiles / etc to a number of Microsoft Employees within the Education team and after months and months of chasing NOBODY can give me an answer as I don't think they have one. Mandatory profiles seem to have vanished of the face of the earth, and don't seem to be supported in Windows 8 / 10 properly - and setting up Default User Profiles use to be fairly straight forward, but now you have to faff about with sysprepping and running unattend scripts to get it sorted.

Does anybody have an ultimate guide / best practice guide for how they have got Windows 10 setup and working successfully in the "shared" classroom, e.g. IT Rooms, with high daily volumes with many users logging in and out of the same computers over the course of a day. What sort of profiles have you got set up for your users? Does each user have their own roaming profile? Do they all use the same shared Mandatory profile? how have you set this up? How do you get around all the App's trying to install everytime a user logs into the computer? What are your logon times like? Have you found that you needed to tweak any register settings to get the ultimate user experience, like in previous versions of Windows - ActiveSetup keys etc. I'm finding trying to setup Windows in a school based environment with shared desktops rather then personal devices seems to be becoming increasingly more difficult - they seem to expect that everybody now will be working from their own personal device and that their profiles will be stored on that one device, they logon for the first time, the apps install for that first time logon and that's it for ever more.... But of course this doesn't work like that in a school IT Room... So, if anybody has the ultimate classroom setup guide or can share some of their best practices I'd love to read them! Thanks

I did download this on a test tablet I have at home, but I wasn't sure that this would allow us to download the Enterprise / Education version and be able to use a Volume License Code to activate?

Does anybody know if this update is now embedded within the ISO files that can be downloaded from the Volume Licensing Service Centre if we are installing new setups? The release date on the page still shows as - "Release Date 8/1/2015" which seems to suggest they have not been updated? Thanks Matt

Hi All, Our photography department have got a DNP DS-RX1 Dye Sublimation Printer instant photo printer... Does anybody know of any "FREE" software that I could you to install on a machine that will allow me to have a setup similar to what you find in Boots / Jessops etc on their instant photo kiosks - so the students can go up to it, insert their USB Cards and print out the photos they need there and then - with minimum user input / technical knowledge / fuss etc Thanks Matt

I get similar issues and would love to find an answer - using Windows XP and a login script it worked everytime but no longer on Windows 8.1 - Do you use mandatory profiles? I think it's something to do with them? As users with a roaming or local profile don't seem to have the same issue?

I've just emailed Microsoft and had this reply back.... "I can confirm the patch to make the cmdlet available through powershell is now complete. It is now being tested and soon be deployed across O365. I can’t make an exact estimate when it will land on your tenant, but please expect October – November timeframe."

Since my last email, I’ve opened a design change request, it has been re-evaluated by our product engineering team and we believe most users are using the Reply All action. So the decision was made to leave it as it is, at least for the time being. Good news is that we are working on exposing the feature through powershell, to make it easier for admins in changing the option for multiple users. It will be available this fall. Regarding the EWS script, I would not go that route, given the additional work required compared with the powershell switch that is due to be released. They're holding off sending me the script until all possibilities of reverting the change or have an admin switch in the back end for admin to decide the default have all been exhausted

I've had his back.... Hi Matt, Hope you are well. I’m following up with some updates based on the progress so far. Unfortunately this change was made in the source code some time ago and only now it got activated with the OWA interface change. It appears it is here to stay, however I will push through all my available channels to get some positive turnaround. At the end of the day, if this is what our product engineering team will stick with, it is not much we can do. I’ll let you know as soon as I have other updates. Meanwhile the workaround I suggest is to advise users they can quickly change the behavior using this link (https://outlook.office365.com/owa/#path=/options/replysettings) (they need to be logged on to OWA first). Additionally, there is a way admins can manipulate this option programmatically, through an EWS script, however it is not really straightforward. I can request that script if you are willing to go that route. ----------------- Will let you know more about the script thats mentioned when I get something back

If you do not agree with the issue definition/scope defined below, or would like to amend it, please let me know as soon as possible. ISSUE DEFINITION You have an O365 tenant and the issue is that the default Reply action in OWA was changed to Reply All. This generated some mail storms plus some embarrassing emails/replies, so you would like to have this reverted or at least to have a way for admins to control the behavior programmatically, because having to go through each user settings and change the option is very time consuming. IMPACT Recently we've changed the Reply All button in OWA to be the default action instead of Reply. This had a dramatic impact on your environment, because users were used with Reply so this generated some mail storms plus some embarrassing emails/replies. I have to add that the majority of users (1200) are using OWA. SCOPE AGREEMENT If the issue is O365 related and technically possible, this case will be considered as resolved when the default Reply action in OWA will be changed to Reply instead of Reply All or at least we'll have a way for admins to control the behavior programmatically. The above applies if this issue is not generated by a 3rd party component or by design limitation. ACTION PLAN Thank you for your time today on the call. As advised, I’ve now raised an internal request to our product engineering team to flag the issue and see if we’re going to change the behavior globally or provide with a way to better manipulate the setting. I’ll keep you updated with the progress.

They seem to be listening about the problem it's causing and are hoping that the developers will make the change - I've stressed how dangerous this change is and how it's already led to some very embarrassing moments!

We've had big issues around this - and have open case with Microsoft about reverting it back - Yes - the user can change the default back to Reply - but that's upto each user... No powershell to force it to default - WHY can't the default remain as it was and let the user choose IF they want Reply All as their default!

Thanks for that... I'm not in school to try it out at the moment! Seems total madness to me having to put those settings in for something that worked fine previously! Hey ho!

I'm not sure if that's what I'm after, I have that setting in place for the job it's intended to do - That setting is in place to remove the username from a logon screen when the computer is switched on and sitting at the logon screen or when a user signs out completely from the computer, it removes the username of the last logged on user. What I'm experiencing is when a computer is already logged on as a user - and whilst the computer is STILL in use, they lock it whilst they are absent from the machine - in previous versions of windows, the lock screen shows This computer is in use by "USER" - however, on Windows 10, the lock screen looks just like the normal Windows 10 logon screen, with no indication that somebody else is actually using that machine and away from the desk. I thought we may have been onto a winner for that suggestion, but I've just taken a look and the option to disable fast user switching via Group Policy is already setup, so that doesn't make any difference for this scenerio.

Has anyone noticed that when you lock a Windows 10 workstation - it no longer shows the name of the user that is currently working on the machine, or give any really identification that somebody is working on the computer, as pressing Control + Alt + Del brings up the logon box for another user to easily login. I can see this causing some big problems - we quite often have students, mainly in our 6th Form Study area, where they will "pop off" for a few minutes and lock their workstation - at present it says the workstation is locked and in use by "name of person" - On Windows 10 (and to some degree in Windows 8, although it does show the person logged into it in Windows 8) and user could pop off, somebody else could log on not knowing it's in use and carry on, only for the returning user to find somebody else is working on the workstation they are working on. Has anybody found a way to change this behaviour? Possibly via GPO? Thanks Matt

I really hope the education team manage to get something sorted out soon on this one, I've just tried calling the Microsoft UK (Reading) switchboard to speak to somebody in the Education Team, to be told that there isn't one!?!?! - It's a real pain when most of the features within the O/S tend to be aimed at businesses where it's usually one person logging into one machine first thing in the morning and staying on that machine all day - in a school where you have lots of logging on and off's during the day it's a real nightmare and slows everything down. I was hoping when I saw an Education version of Windows 10 coming out that this would address some of these issues but it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any clear guides on using Mandatory Profiles on Windows 8.1 - 10 and they seem to be making it more awkarward to setup the profiles - with the sysprep copyprofile option rather then just being able to copy the profile to a share - I've never really found any clear documentation around what persmissions should be setup on the folders / files for users of the mandatory profile either. Microsoft seem keen to push roaming profiles - but I don't want to end up with 1000+ Roaming profiles sitting on my server for the pupils - I just want the same Mandatory profile for all my pupils which loads up nice and fast!!! Thanks Guys... Yes we create a share for each users - I guess it's a habit that's stuck from the days of NT4.0 and never really known any different way of doing it - I agree there's a bit of work when using naming conventions such as Year group rather then intake year - but using tools / scripts doesn't really make that much work of it, I've updated the folders earlier on and it took about 5 minutes to do the whole school - I sometimes try and make a cup of tea on a normal school day that takes longer then that! As staff have read only access to students folders it's far easier for them to look in a Year group folder then working out the intake year... also with 6th Form students and students coming to 6th Form from other schools would there "intake year" be set as 2015 which would be mixed with all our Year 7 students if they were joining us this year - or would there intake be 2010 when they would have been in Year 7 - it's far easier just to put them all in a Year 12 folder and all the Year 7's in a Year 7 folder. I take on board the comments about the share folders and will look to implement that... Thanks Matt
