as it has a chat option built in.

new hard disk, rebuild and system state restore - jobs a good'un! Looks like random file corruption /missing system files as what i did look at seemed to point to random missing files from system32 and a few other weird things. thanks all for trying

hmm getting into the registry remotely is proving to be a pain but thanks michael that looks like the only way ahead.. i'll try a few more tricks before I resign myself to a rebuild. At least it is the easter holiday!

curiouser and curiouser - second admin account has same problem - hooked up a lappy and used remote computer management - i have limited access but can see the shared folders - it appears the c:\ drive believes it is actually the d:\ drive. sadly i cannot seem to get into the disk management section of computer management.I'm wondering about using a bootable floppy or maybe asr to change the drive letter at a commad prompt - - i know it sounds a bit like clutching at straws in the bottom of a barrel but surely its possible - and i'm nt even gonna start investigating how the drive letter got played with yet... 1st priority is fix

Michael - that what I am hoping too - luckily there is a second account - I will be calling the other technician for her password tomorrow - my head is too fried today ! thanks for the suggestions guys my plan tomorrow is try second admin a/c, hook up another pc on a mini network with same ip range and run computer management on it - maps some drives to it and get my fingers on the event viewer- and rename the administrator profile! for now I am going to go home and think fluffy thoughts!

yep its a domain controller - the only server on the network - - and the logon scripts do nothing other than map drivers and printers ... no other scripts are run at logon either.

suddenly i cant seem to log on to my windows 2003 server ( it is off site so no clients connected) logon as my administrator account - it starts loading personal settings - then immediately says logging off and logs me out - any ideas? might try and remote conmpter manage it andsee if the security log is full i spose but that shouldn't stop the administrator a/c logging on...

hey all! I've been looking at clearing these old accounts out - cant really use the tools out there would like to stick with the micorosft tools : So I have been looking at using either dsquery computer -inactive (noofweeks) {doesn't work on my network} and dsquery computer -stalepwd (noofdays) {works ok on my network} which apparently you can pipe with the dsrm command. i can get the list of inactive accounts ok but i cant seem to get the switch right to remove them in that line. have tried dsquery computer -stalepwd 180 ¦ dsrm and it errors with startnode incorrect format. any one out there can show me the light? think i am being a bit blind here! ta j

I work for one of the departments which support Sidney Stringer school and we are helping with getting locations setup for the kids to continue their work and ICT. I also have their admin server sat on my desk. The whole school has such a massive road ahead of them now to get back on track - good luck to em - I hope they can have a fantastic new school renovation for the kids and a bigger car park - 'cos it was a nightmare to park there!

find out when it starting happening and use system restore back to a day or two before it. I agree more with the video settings issue - certainly the easier thing to fix and change - try the simple solutions first! knock the res down - maybe even re istall the video driver / replace it with a more up to date one - Oh - and do it the long hand way - i.e don't reinstall, uninstall and make sure it has gone , reboot, - to the extent that windows wont go and automatically reinstall the same one again - so you can install a clean new driver. try this before changing h/d or anything more complicated

ChrisP: We are upgrading 118 schools over the summer to the new sql version and despite using dbattach we have had that exact password problem occur on one or two sites. good fun ! There may be an issue in that sims.net is moving to sql authentication and hence all thesecurity changes - leaving you with all passwords being reset - still checking on this as it sounds a pain in the butt.
