The machines are always shut down at the end of the day. Policy is set so they never hibernate, but simply switch off the display after 30 minutes of inactivity. As far as I know the issue seems to be happening on random machines, they dont have anything in common in terms of make or location.

Hi everyone, Okay, a really silly problem but one which keeps cropping up at least three or four times a day. We're running Win7 64 and use roaming profiles and we find that if a user switches on their machine from cold and logs on the moment the log on box appears, they are logged on with a temporary profile. If they simply log out and log back in the same thing happens as the cached temporary profile stays on the C: drive. It is not until they restart the machine (thus wiping the cached profile) and wait for up to 20 seconds AFTER the log on box first appears that they can then log on ok. For this reason we make sure all the ICT suites have their computers powered on by our technician first thing each morning. Has anyone else seen this behaviour? If the issue relates to a particular service that hasn't started quickly enough, I wondered if there was a way of changing the order of the services at boot up. Hi everyone, I have set up a temporary Remote Desktop server to allow certain users to access the school desktop environment from home. Everything seems to be going well except the 'Administrative Tools' program group is showing in the Start Menu when they login via Remote Desktop Services. Is there an easy way to remove this from their Start Menu? Many thanks.

I think we sorted this issue out, for anyone else who may discover it we just got around it by enabling the 'Prevent grouping of taskbar items' group policy.

Hi everyone, Does anyone know of a quick and simple way to make Windows 7 warn a user that their memory stick is still plugged into a USB slot when they attempt to log off? We are suffering an epidemic at this school of students losing their memory sticks! Anything I can do to prevent making any more of the little blighters homeless is most welcome. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I have a very weird problem arising on our newly installed Windows 7 network which I hope someone can shed some light on. Currently we have students using Win 7 64bit with roaming profiles. We've begun to notice a small niggle whereby certain taskbar icons of programs that are running do not match the actual program. For example, a student clicks Microsoft Word using the shortuct in the start menu, Word opens as a new window but the associated icon in the taskbar will show a totally different icon - let's say Powerpoint. What's really bizarre is that if you right click the icon in the taskbar it shows the commands relating to that icon (so if the icon looks like Powerpoint it will display the command for opening Powerpoint as a program - not Word!). Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, how in the name of sweet billy-o did you fix it?? Whilst the students can get on with their work some are finding it a little confusing when they have lots of programs open and the icons are showing incorrectly. Hi There are a number of 'housekeeping' tasks you can do if your mac is slowing down. First and foremost would be to open Disk Utility in your Applications folder and run 'Repair Disk Permissions'. Let that finish, then open up the terminal program (also in the Applications folder) and type 'sudo periodic daily weekly monthly' (without the quotes). It will ask you to enter your Administrator password. Do that then wait for it to finish. This forces the machine to run the maintenance scripts it would normally run in the early hours if you had your laptop running overnight. Be very careful you type this correctly, 'sudo' commands can be dangerous when not used properly! Also, if you go to System Properties, then the Users & Groups icon, under 'Login Items' you can see any programs set to run when you log on. Any that aren't required can be removed from this list, that might help with the boot up time. If all else fails there are free optimization apps available in the App Store that are worth running, iBoostUp being one of them. Hope that helps a little!

With 2 weeks to go 'til release I'm going to wait it out now. Not really that interested in the multiplayer aspect, just keen on importing my ME2 save game into this and starting the new story. I'm currently replaying Mafia II, hope I get enough free time to get that finished before March 9th

I was signed up for the Beta program of Microsoft Flight. Graphically, it is very impressive - but it is certainly designed to be more accessible by non flightsim fans. You only have to look at 360 gamepad support in this to see the changes. My impressions were mixed, it's nice they're making it free to play, but having to pay for additional locations? Naa.. I'd rather have an all-in-one retail package. Stick with FSX, you can't go wrong there.

I've been playing this on the PC (purchased thru Steam at the beginning of February), and I may have a fix for PC players if you're getting random blue-screen crashes with this game. Try turning off anti-aliasing in the graphics options. For the first few hours of play I was getting numerous crashes, after swtiching off anti-aliasing I've been able to play up to 38 hours worth of consecutive play and not have it crash on me once.

In the early deployment stages of Windows 7 here. Just to say we are successfully using TightVNC to connect to the clients.

I downloaded the demo on day of release thru Origin. Unfortunately I encountered a bug in the demo that prevented me from continuing through a locked door (apparantly a cut-scene of the door being unlocked did not initiate), so it was a very short demo. I'm still excited for this release but hope bugs of this nature do not make their way into the final game. But what I did see, if the demo is the actual opening of the retail game, was highly impressive!

Damn SIMS updates! I was about to install the May update last night (until they include the functionality to knock off logged on users I can't get any free time on the system until after school) when something drew me to look on EduGeek. Lo and behold the May release is now being re-released to fix problems incurred by installing the update! Thank God I didn't go ahead with the update. So now I'm having to stay back again on Thursday night to do it then. I can't help but get the feeling we are nothing more than beta testers for SIMS throughout the lifecycle of SIMS .net..
