Ok enough about DHCP's, does anyone know much about how the ageing & scavenging works?

We are a split site, so this is why it is useful for us.

We've had mutiple DNS entries with the same IP addresses for some time now and I'm looking at the ageing & scavenging settings to help tidy it up. We have two DHCP servers with DNS on each one. The DHCP lease time is set at 5 days. Would it be best to set the refresh and non refresh to 2 days each? Also I'm a bit paranoid about changing these settings as I'm no DNS expert. I assume the scavenging will not touch anything non-workstation related or does it automatically ignore addresses outside the DHCP scope?

Have answered my own question. The smarthost setting for our mail server was missing on IIS \ SMTP Virtual server \ Delivery \ Advanced. God knows why it disappeared or even if it was there in the first place, but the email notifications are all working again and that is good enough for me. Hopefully this thread will help someone else out one day if not myself if the same happens again.

Providing the PDF is not protected, open it using Openoffice. It will use Draw to display the PDF. You may need to install the PDF addin, but I think that is just to export it out again as a PDF. I did only last week, so I know it works.

Try downloading the free openoffice, you can make changes and then export to PDF again.

Our Liberum helpdesk (uses CDONTS) has all of a sudden stopped sending notification emails. To our knowledge nothing has changed. Liberum is on one server and uses smtp to relay to our exchange 2007 server in the same domain. I think I've ruled Liberum out, as we have two helpdesks and both have stopped sending emails. I've also tried dropping a test email into the IIS pickup folder and the mail always ends up in the Badmail folder with the rest of the Liberum stuff. The error message on the log files says: smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for (email address) I've checked exchange and the receive connectors are setup to accept relaying from all our internal servers so all seems fine there. Anyone have any clues to how this has suddenly stopped?

Hi Guys, Sorry, I hadn't noticed that this thread had been updated. Smadison, nice idea, but the latop screen darkened in front of me with no others laptops or other magnetic sources close to me. Mullet_man, this support document doesn't quite fit. The issue is the sudden turning off of the backlight (even when actively using the laptop) and not any sort of sleep resuming. I've contacted HP and they've been through the usual "have you tried this" scenarios and then agreed to take the affected laptop in for repair. I guess they would just replace the inverter / backlight, in the absence of not knowing themselves what else could be causing the problem. I haven't yet sent it off in case someone else comes up with something. Testing is a pain, as you have to wait for the condition to happen before you can rule certain steps out, and it doesn't seem to occur if you just leave the laptop to one side and not use it. Now my problem is that the laptops are reaching the end of their one year warranty. At this stage I'm guessing it is a hardware related problem more than a software / driver issue. Maybe a faulty batch of inverters in this model?? What OS are other people using that are affected? I'm using XP here. Any more updates from anyone? I'm tempted to maybe send one laptop off, get it back and see what they've done and then re-test to see what happens.

Thanks for the replys people There isn't a podcast as far as I can see for what I'm looking to copy Get_iPlayer is non windows, so not an option for me I've tried Audacity but don't seem to have an option to change to wave or stereo mix. My only options are microphone or Line in.

Hi all, Anyone know how to do this in the easiest way? I just want to grab audio from a bbc radio show, but every method I've tried so far has fallen flat on it's face.

Presume you are using USB leads and not serial connections from PC to Board. Are the USB leads less than 2 meters long?

We have about 70 plus of these ordered in since last summer. We've only now had reports that the screen dims intermittently (no fixed duration of time) giving the effect that the backlight has turned off. The only way to get it back again is to make it go into standby and bring it out again. It is rumored to happen on various different laptops of the same model. We use the laptops on battery and that is when the problem occurs, so plugging them in can't really be a solution. I've checked the bios and there are no related options to change there. I've tried changing the graphics driver version, but my colleague has mentioned that it happened to him whilst testing and it stayed dim whilst he rebooted the laptop several times, so I'm guessing that rules out the driver. I've turned off all power saving features. The brightness settings don't seem to have any effect. When it happened last the battery still had an 1 hour and a half left in it. I haven't tried attaching an external monitor yet, but will next time to see what happens. Has anyone else come across this yet? I'm not sure how often this is occurring to know how big a problem it might be, but if it is a faulty component, it could be a bit of a headache sending off all the laptops for repair.

Display tab in 'accessibility options' under control panel

I've had something similar to this before. Try configuring options in the display tab in 'accessibility options' under control panel. In the General tab there is an option to apply all settings to the logon desktop.

Sounds like the fuser to me if the toner isn't fusing. Can always try swapping one from another printer if you have two of the same model to prove it to yourself.

I'm having trouble installing this from a CD onto a new Dell Poweredge R200 server. The CD boots initally into the software and then refuses to acknowledge that a CD drives exists where you normally add the additonal drivers. The internal CD drive is sata which could be part of the problem. I've tried connecting the drive to port A and booting straight off it, no luck. There are no IDE ports for me to connect a IDE CD drive. I've also tried it from an external USB CD drive with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

Did anyone ever find a resolution to this problem. We have IE6 here and have had reports of the BBC site crashing despite recently updating to Flash 9. On testing, logged in as admin, it will only crash the first time if at all and then loads fine after that, which makes it a nightmare to troubleshoot. When it crashes it will get roughly a third of the way through loading the page (no graphics on the page) and then brings up the common un-useful debug message.

Thanks for all the input from everyone. I think I've solved the problem now. I turned off the spanning tree protocol on all the ports and have had no problems since. This isn't the same option as SPT fast start. Obviously SPT is there to check for loops, but we haven't got any reduntant links so we should be ok so long as a student doesn't bend a network cable out of one datapoint to another.

Thanks for the help so far. I've changed a setting on the switches which is 'state' to disabled under the spanning tree parameters. For some reason this seems to lets all PC's get a IP address. Some people had already mentioned the STP fast start but this was already enabled when I checked. I'm not an expert on switches at all, so does anyone know what this really means? I understand that each port goes through different states (blocking, forwarding) when a PC turns on. Does this just turn this off? I'm scared of the implications it might introduce. I've read that the spanning tree protocol is there to protect again any network loops. The PC's that have the problems are brand new and boot very fast, so I guess this is why other PC's on the same switch are not affected. The switch must be causing the DHCP to time out.

Thanks for the input so far. Just to update people: The network is working normally as far as I can tell. My boss recently added some more ip addresses so we should be ok. I've checked for rogue DHCP's but can't find any. It shouldn't be high network traffic as the kids are off and it's still happening I imagine a static address will work fine, it's getting an DHCP address that is the problem. If it gets an address it doesn't then lose connectivity. A PC can be fine working with an DHCP address. I shut down the PC and reboot and all of a sudden it can't contact the DHCP server. I have been testing it on around 22 PC's in a classroom. I shut them all down, fire them up and I will likely get 1 or 2 random PC's that refuse to get a address. To add to it, one's that have problems connecting sometimes come up with the "this windows is not geniune" routine. This disappears if they connect to an address the next time. I'm not sure if this is related or not.

When the problem happens the PC fails to get an IP address and assigns itself a 169 address. Attempting to release and renew doesn't seem to work, but doing one of the following allows it to pick up an address again: disconnect / reconnect the network cable disable / enable network connection restarting the PC (most of the time) changing the speed of the card or making driver alterations I've tried Updating the network driver Setting the network card speed permanently to 100mb putting different images on the PC's The network cards are 1 gb Broadcom net extreme 57xx The problem seems worst in 2 or 3 rooms although I am seeing the same dhcp events on other PC's as well so I can't rule them out. I have spotted in DNS that PC's in one of the troublesome rooms share IP's with other PC's. Could this cause this type of problem? If so, I'm not sure how it then works if you disconnect reconnect the network cable. This problem is drving me mad because of it's intermittent nature so if anyone has any clues that would be much appreicated.

Damn anti-virus isn't picking up on this new breed of trojan I've just found in my PC.
