Interesting, sounds like it'd do the job... if you do come up with the name feel free to let me know. I have done most of the articles just by copy-pasting into notepad. Luckily they were mostly just text. Now to work on why JComments aren't transferring!

Thanks for the response, although I think I'm past this point as I have the site already up on the new hosting, ready to have the extra articles added. Ideally I just want to be able to access the two sites side by side if at all possible. I could still do it by logging into the old one and copy pasting batches of articles into Notepad, but I just thought it'd be a bit more convenient if there was a way to access them together and have them side by side to copy and paste. If there were a workaround where you could make one browser ignore the hosts file that'd be great, but I'm not sure if that's possible at this stage.

I am currently migrating a website to new hosting, and am using a hosts file edit to see the new website using the same URL. However, the staff here have continued to add to the website since the backup was taken, so I will have to do a bit of cross-referencing to add the extra articles. What I would like to know is if there is a simple way to bypass the line that redirects it in the hosts file without actually editing the file itself? I would need to be checking both the old and new sites repeatedly, so could do with being able to access both installs of the site concurrently. Ideally I would like to have one browser open (say Firefox) with the new website in it, and one browser open (say IE) with the old website in it, so I can quickly copy and paste the newer articles across. I don't really want to have to keep editing the hosts files to jump in and out of each website to copy and paste... The only other thing Google has yielded so far is the idea of running virtual instances of Windows to do it - surely there has to be a less complicated way? Does anyone have any experiences of doing this?

Yeah, it depends how you set it up too. If you set it up so the mail goes into its own inbox, you can click in that inbox and the 'get mail' button at the top will change into a 'Get external mail' button. But the way you describe works fine too!

You have to be in 'Advanced view' to get the External Accounts option. Is that it? Also, Link2ICT have now locked down all Zimbra emails for schools that have yet to transfer as they were causing problems apparently. So I now can't get into 3 of my 4 accounts. Great!

Never mind, I figured it out.... Little-Miss, yes you can move from Plus to Zimbra. I found this out just after the holiday AFTER having backed up loads of people's emails using Outlook.... typical! A quick run-down - In Zimbra: Preferences > Accounts > Add External Account Email Address: Obviously the email address ([email protected]) Account name: Just descriptive, whatever you want Account type: Pick IMAP if you want to keep your folder setup. Has to be enabled by Link2ICT though I think. Username: The email address again email server: mail.domain.bham.sch.uk password: the password associated with that email account Test Settings - If you see success, you just click save and it'll return to the main screen and dump all your BGFL+ emails into your inbox. By the way, the email server after migration IS mail.domain.plus.myvle.org, I was making the mistake of using the old email addresses, when infact they have changed to [email protected]. I changed it to this and it works a treat. Now to get the remaining email into everyone's inboxes! Thanks for your help anyway guys - hope this info is of some help to other as I know Link2ICT haven't helped me one bit here!

Don't suppose that pdf said anything about the email server details for the old mymail once it's on the parked domain? Before the migration, I could get Zimbra to grab mail from BGFL+ accounts using mail.domain.bham.sch.uk, but that no longer works and neither does mail.domain.plus.myvle.org. I've tried a few alternate versions of this but no joy. I didn't quite get everyone's mail across from Plus into Zimbra before migration as I (possibly stupidly) assumed it would stay the same for the two weeks - just not working. I could really do with getting this working, and I'm guessing it should still be possible with the right settings. Any ideas?

Thanks for the response - it answered my questions and then some! I'll get the staff to download the new settings in the staff meeting tonight then, and hopefully all will be well and they can go away and start using it properly!

Ah, excellent - a simple answer! Surely Link2ICT should of let me know that URL. Or at least should of been able to give me it when I logged the call - 48 hours and counting since I logged it and still they've not given me that vital piece of info! Oh well, at least this means I should be able to set up Zimbra to get external mail from it still. I'll have to give it a go. Thanks!

How did your Zimbra transfer go? I had one of my schools done on monday (the first in the cluster), and for the most part it went well. However, I was a little annoyed to find that immediately after that BGFL+ has been disabled completely. Considering I'd definitely read that BGFL+ inboxes would be available for two weeks after the transfer, I'm not too happy to be greeted with a 404 error when trying to get into mymail, mydesktop, admin etc. Anyway, I logged a call with Link2ICT on Monday afternoon, and they put it on a P3 (3 days) priority, so I've had no answer as to why it's gone as of yet. Can you still access BGFL+ for your school CHR1S? I am concerned about this, as one of my schools uses BGFL+ very heavily (weird, I know!), and as they're not all trained up and confident with Moodle, it would be devastating if BGFL+ was just 'switched off' with the Zimbra transfer. Also, thanks for the pop/smtp info - I was wondering about that!

I've been dealing with this program at one of my schools for the last couple of weeks - it's been a bit of a nightmare to setup having been given the responsibilty half way through the setup process and no information about it whatsoever. Anyway, it's pretty much setup now, but can someone tell me exactly what information is sent and received when the admin uploads and a teacher downloads new settings. I'm concerned because I have had to make some tweaks to the settings and print layouts, and have uploaded them to the server. I'm a little wary of going ahead and downloading the settings onto the teachers laptops if they have started their reports. ComputingData, any chance you can confirm that their reports won't be overwritten by doing this? So far they will probably have saved the reports.rp file to the HDD, but probably not uploaded them to the server for back-up/merging.

Call me dim if you want, but how is this script supposed to be run? Is it supposed to be saved as a .bat file or something similar? Sounds very useful, if I can understand what to do with it! Also, how does it work? Do I need Office 2007 on the computer I run the script on to do the convert, or does it just do it the dirty way and edit the file's properties?

There are a hell of a lot of bad reviews on TalkTalk, but that is always for their 'internet service provindings', so they might be ok for just a landline. I would never ever consider getting internet off them. Going somewhat off-topic, but I would always recommend O2 for adsl broadband, both in price and the service you get!

Ah so it can be automated! Thanks for this - I will investigate this software! You realise that 1024px wide is still plenty big enough for most things though, right? Todays digital cameras produce absolutely HUGE images that only need to be left that way if they want to be printed on full-page A4 photo-paper and that sort of thing. And even then the original size is probably still not needed. Bear in mind that you can get photos off digital cameras that are 3000px wide easily, and then consider that a 1920 px wide image is a decent size for a HD display!

As I said, you can use GIMP and David's Batch Processor (both free downloads), but if this powertool Image Resizer does it with a right-click, surely you can select-all, right click and image resize? Haven't tried it yet, but that's what I'd assume...

Why did I not know about this...? Thanks for this - I'm going to check it out and see what it's like. This could save me those couple of minutes it takes for GIMP to load when all I want to do is scale an image! In my experience, most of the images on our networks are just these type of 'snaps'. Maybe that's a difference between Primary and Secondary networks though...

Seems like a great idea to me - I know there are tonnes of massive photos on our networks, both on shared drives and in people's home directories. It's definitely something I'd be interested in - particularly at one school where HDD space on the server is starting to reach its limits. Is there a way to automate this then? I wouldn't want to just disallow images over 1024 px wide completely as this'd just cause problems -there's no way a lot of staff would know know how to resize images taken straight from a camera for instance. However, if you knew of some process that automatically resized images as they were put on the network, that'd be fantastic, although I don't see how that could be done. The only thing I can think of right now is a copy of GIMP with David's Batch Processor to batch resize files, but that would obviously still take a fair amount of human work what with hunting down all the files...

Here's an idea. What I did for one of my school's websites was to build the site completely with Dreamweaver. Then I created a blog at blogger.com, and made all the teachers and staff authors for that blog. I then used a bit of HTML code from FeedWind so that every time someone posts a new entry to the blog, the title and a bit of the content appear on the front page of the website. This way, the site and the blog are linked 'kind of' seamlessly, and teachers get to post what they want while I still have full control over the website to ensure it doesn't get messed up! It's an idea anyway, and a cheap alternative to buying into a CMS website.
