Ethnicity - Standard to Extended Mapping
LosOjos replied to LosOjos's topic in Data Managers's Data Managers Topics
@NormalDistribution - thanks for that. Not quite what I'm after but helpful nonetheless. I'm trying to map the SIMS standard codes to extended for the purpose of analysis. I've sorted it now using the list above (simply added a lookup to my Excel sheets to give me the "standard" code equivalent for each given "extended" code, so now my analysis can keep looking at the codes it always has!) We may well decide to break down the analysis further in future but at this stage in the year, I just needed to keep rolling with what I've got. -
I wasn't born until '88, I don't think it's fair to call me ignorant because I didn't experience life before I was born... I know the anecdotal evidence says things were better back then but I don't put much weight in anecdotal evidence. So, I don't know what the world was like before '88 (actually, I couldn't honestly say I really know what the world was like before I started work, so 2004!) but I do know that the press like to whip up a frenzy because that's what sells. I can't say for sure that that's what has caused people to be a little cold, but I know my grandparents and my OH's grandparents genuinely worry about what they read in the papers and I also know that what they read isn't a true reflection of UK daily life.
-
Was that aimed at me?

The only real difference I can see between now and "the good old days" is that the press get away with exaggerating the extent of a problem a lot more now than they used to. The UK has a population of approximately 64m people; 3 incidents in 12 months isn't a major problem (the three listed in this thread are the only ones I'm aware of, I'm not saying there haven't been more). That's not to say these aren't awful and sometimes tragic incidents, but it's no refelection on the general populous. These 3 have all happened within a week of each other which makes things seem worse, but it's nothing more than a statistical anomaly. Average the number of these types of incident out over a 12 month period and take the size of the population in to consideration and it's safe to say the country isn't going to hell in a hand-basket. As for people's manners in public, yeah I agree to an extent that a lot of people seem cold. I wasn't around in the "old days" to know if things were really any better then, but if they were then I'd put the change down to sensationalist headlines from the likes of the Daily Fail stirring up the public's fear of one another more than any real change in human emotion.

Ethnicity - Standard to Extended Mapping
LosOjos replied to LosOjos's topic in Data Managers's Data Managers Topics
How wonderful... despite me taking all those ethnicity descriptions straight from the details included with the SIMS imports, they don't all match what is actually imported in to SIMS Will have to work though the discrepancies. Thanks Capita! -

Well I haven't had an official list yet, will post one up when/if I get one, in the meantime here's a TSV list I have come up with myself if anyone needs it, standard codes on the left, extended on the right: ABAN Bangladeshi ABAN Bangladeshi AIND Indian AIND Indian AOTH Any Other Asian Background AAFR African Asian AOTH Any Other Asian Background AKAO Kashmiri Other AOTH Any Other Asian Background ANEP Nepali AOTH Any Other Asian Background AOTA Other Asian AOTH Any Other Asian Background ASLT Sri Lankan Tamil AOTH Any Other Asian Background ASNL Sri Lankan Sinhalese AOTH Any Other Asian Background ASRO Sri Lankan Other AOTH Any Other Asian Background OAFG Afghan AOTH Any Other Asian Background OARA Arab Other AOTH Any Other Asian Background OEGY Egyptian AOTH Any Other Asian Background OFIL Filipino AOTH Any Other Asian Background OIRN Iranian AOTH Any Other Asian Background OIRQ Iraqi AOTH Any Other Asian Background OJPN Japanese AOTH Any Other Asian Background OKOR Korean AOTH Any Other Asian Background OKRD Kurdish AOTH Any Other Asian Background OLEB Lebanese AOTH Any Other Asian Background OLIB Libyan AOTH Any Other Asian Background OMAL Malay AOTH Any Other Asian Background OTHA Thai AOTH Any Other Asian Background OVIE Vietnamese AOTH Any Other Asian Background OYEM Yemeni APKN Pakistani AKPA Kashmiri Pakistani APKN Pakistani AMPK Mirpuri Pakistani APKN Pakistani AOPK Other Pakistani BAFR Black - African BANN Black - Angolan BAFR Black - African BAOF Other Black African BAFR Black - African BCON Black - Congolese BAFR Black - African BGHA Black - Ghanaian BAFR Black - African BNGN Black - Nigerian BAFR Black - African BSLN Black - Sierra Leonean BAFR Black - African BSOM Black - Somali BAFR Black - African BSUD Black - Sudanese BCRB Black Caribbean BCRB Black Caribbean BOTH Any Other Black Background BEUR Black European BOTH Any Other Black Background BNAM Black North American BOTH Any Other Black Background BOTB Other Black CHNE Chinese CHKC Hong Kong Chinese CHNE Chinese CMAL Malaysian Chinese CHNE Chinese COCH Other Chinese CHNE Chinese CSNG Singaporean Chinese CHNE Chinese CTWN Taiwanese MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MABL Asian and Black MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MACH Asian and Chinese MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MAOE Asian and Any Other Ethnic Group MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MBCH Black and Chinese MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MBOE Black and Any Other Ethnic Group MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MCOE Chinese and Any Other Ethnic Group MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MOTM Other Mixed Background MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MWCH White and Chinese MOTH Any Other Mixed Background MWOE White and Any Other Ethnic Group MWAS White and Asian MWAI White and Indian MWAS White and Asian MWAO White and Any Other Asian Background MWAS White and Asian MWAP White and Pakistani MWBA White and Black African MWBA White and Black African MWBC White and Black Caribbean MWBC White and Black Caribbean NOBT Information Not Yet Obtained NOBT Information Not Yet Obtained OOTH Any Other Ethnic Group OLAM Latin/ South/ Central American OOTH Any Other Ethnic Group OMRC Moroccan OOTH Any Other Ethnic Group OOEG Other Ethnic Group OOTH Any Other Ethnic Group OPOL Polynesian REFU Refused REFU Refused WBRI White - British WCOR White - Cornish WBRI White - British WENG White - English WBRI White - British WOWB Other White British WBRI White - British WSCO White - Scottish WBRI White - British WWEL White - Welsh WIRI White - Irish WIRI White - Irish WIRT Traveller of Irish Heritage WIRT Traveller of Irish Heritage WOTH Any Other White Background WALB Albanian WOTH Any Other White Background WBOS Bosnian- Herzegovinian WOTH Any Other White Background WCRO Croatian WOTH Any Other White Background WEEU White Eastern European WOTH Any Other White Background WEUR White European WOTH Any Other White Background WGRC Greek Cypriot WOTH Any Other White Background WGRK Greek WOTH Any Other White Background WITA Italian WOTH Any Other White Background WKOS Kosovan WOTH Any Other White Background WOTW White Other WOTH Any Other White Background WPOR Portuguese WOTH Any Other White Background WSER Serbian WOTH Any Other White Background WTUC Turkish Cypriot WOTH Any Other White Background WTUK Turkish WOTH Any Other White Background WWEU White Western European WROM Gypsy / Roma WROM Gypsy / Roma It looks messy on here but if you copy and paste it in to a text file, save it as a TSV then open it in Excel, it's much clearer! -

When Andy dropped the 10" tablet, did anyone else notice Alan's head become a brighter shade of red? I thought it was going to pop! -

Hi all, I have asked my local SIMS support team if they have anything but I'm in a bit of a rush so asking here too. Does anyone have a list/table showing where the extended ethnicity codes fall within the simplified ones? For instance, I'm looking for something like this:

Simple Extended

Black - African Black - Angolan

Black - Congolese

Black - Ghanian

Black - Nigerian

Black - Sierra Leonian

Black - Somali

Black - Sudanese

Other Black African

The reason I need this is because up until this week, we've always used the simplified list in SIMS and all our analysis is based on that list. Now that we've moved over to the extended list, all my analysis has gone pear shaped! Won't be too hard to sort out (thank $deity for array formulas in Excel!) but a definitive list would be very useful, otherwise I'll have to do the mapping myself. Thanks all!

I nearly went for a job like that some years ago - over in @Vikpaw's neck of the woods. I've a family now though so no go for me but a great opportunity for a "youngster" (I'm only 26 but old before my time!)
-
The first riff I learned (not counting Smoke on the Water...) was Paranoid - still one of my favourites to this day also Iron Man, War Pigs and Black Sabbath; all tracks to make your mates think you're a guitar god with nothing more than a handful of power chords

Well this just keeps getting stranger... I've not found the source of the problem yet, but if I copy and paste the text in to Notepad, the dashes are there. Likewise, if I paste in to Word as "text only" then the dashes are shown. A straight copy past to Word doesn't show the dashes, but there's also no apparent formatting, even in outline view. I copied and pasted the space that gets replaced with dashes from Word in to Notepad expecting it to show dashes, but instead of dashes I get a series of 'not' signs (¬)... however if I copy/paste the same space from SIMS straight in to Notepad, the dashes are back... There's clearly some kind of formatting character in there but it doesn't appear to do anything to give me a clue what the teacher was trying to do that caused this problem... I'm stumped!

I've been weighing up a metal option for my second choice. Initially I thought Ozzy, but (shock! horror!) I'm not so keen on his solo stuff, then I thought Sabbath but I've always much preferred the Ozzy era Sabbath, then it hit me: Number 2: Tony Iommi Apart from being one of the best metal guitarists ever to have lived (anyone who doubts this should remember he pretty much invented the metal guitar sound so even if you don't like him, you owe him some credit if you're remotely interested in metal!), his discography gets me the whole of Black Sabbath's back catalogue, so I get all my Ozzy albums (the best Sabbath albums IMO) plus I get the Dio albums (still some great albums there), plus his great solo album Iommi featuring many of rock and metal's best front men on vocals, as well as Heaven & Hell, one of the better modern metal bands IMO.
-
Artists rather than tracks... Number 1: Paul Weller Now don't get me wrong, Weller isn't my favourite artist in the world but if I were stuck on a desert island, there'd be something in his discography for whatever mood I'm in. From the mod/punk Jam era, to the pop/jazz Style Council through to his solo career which by all accounts has a bit of everything; everyone should own a copy of Wild Wood. An incredibly varied discography full of great tracks. That was my 'easy' pick, now to think of someone more obscure but essential...

There's a tiny black hole in the box for you. Problem is if you're drawn, we'll all be sucked in to it. -
*sigh* no reply. It's ok though, I have a mental list of staff who ignore me I'm going to try a little experiment, try to cram in to a paragraph as many different formatting options as I can in Word and Excel, then copy/paste it in to SIMS and see if anything triggers the bug. Will keep you posted.

Eerie... I can imagine this being played over the epic finale of something like Revolution or The Walking Dead in a nod to the end of America... Perhaps it should become the Republican's "theme" tune! -

Very cool Not my shot but an online acquaintance, this guy did a 40 minute exposure similar to yours: -
Not sure what you mean? A regex string is a text string, it's the format of that string that defines what the regex query finds as a match. Do you mean that you have a string literal which you want to convert to a regex query so that regex returns all matches of that exact string? If the string contains only alphanumeric characters, you don't need to change it. If however it contains special characters (punctuation), then you'll need to escape them, either by placing a backslash before each special character or wrapping the entire string in \Q...\E, i.e. to find "this. is. sparta!" you could wrap it like so: "\Qthis. is. sparta!\E" and regex would treat everything between \Q...\E as literal. EDIT: this website was a god send when I started using regex: http://www.regular-expressions.info/tutorial.html

2010 I've emailed the teacher whose reports are showing this problem to ask her about her workflow, I want to see if I can track down exactly what is causing the issue. I'll log a call once I figure out what's happening or reach a dead end, whichever comes first!
