You definitely can, it's the whole head unit that's interesting to me though. I'm no engineer and making a screen I can neatly slide away in to the dash when parked is probably out of the bounds of my skill

I'm wondering how hackable it is... planning a Raspberry Pi carputer and this could make an awesome head unit if that display is hackable... need to find a broken one for cheap to have a play with!

It's generally a bad idea to run anything as root unless you're certain you need to - it would give the script unfettered access to your system. It would also make any files created by an installation script owned by root which would make them inaccessible to Apache anyway

I'm no guru, but I'm pretty certain you don't give Perl any specific access, it inherits the access of the user who runs the script. So if you're running the script as yourself, you need access to the directories. If it's running as part of a web service, the server (e.g. Apache) needs access EDIT to add: this is Linux permissions in general, it's not Perl/Apache specific

@studio - I chose to always round down to 1 d.p. (don't need it more accurate than that) because if you don't then there are instances where a child who is (for instance) 1 mark off a 5 would actually have a fine score that rounded to 5. By always rounding down, they would come out as a 4.9

Using Google is absolutely not a failure. Even if I know a task inside out because I've done it so many times before, I'll still sometimes Google it. Why? Because we work in a constantly evolving field and what applies one day may be obsolete the next. A task that takes me an hour to complete today might have a 5 minute solution tomorrow, but I'd never know that if I never researched. As for Googling new products being a failure - give me a break! It's a far better use of my time to research the current printers on the market at the time I'm in the market to buy one than to pointlessly keep a mental log of model numbers in case anyone happens to ask. Research is an extremely important skill in any field, especially in one that evolves as rapidly as ours. We live in a digital age and we're supposed to be the pioneers - if we can't use the biggest digital research tool that ever existed, who can?

Some great suggestions from @RichCowell - I'd recommend Textra as an alternative to Handcent though - many of the same features, I just found it nicer to use (was a Handcent user for a couple of years before making the switch). It also works with my next recommendation: Pushbullet - on it's own, not that useful, but install the Chrome/Firefox plugin and you can easily push pages/documents from your browser to your phone and vice-versa. Also allows you to receive notifications from your phone to your desktop and read and respond to texts (if you have a compatible text app, such as Textra)

One thing to note is they won't have access to the individual classes, but to the course. So you need to add a marksheet for the course itself. Then your HOD will see something like "Assessment Marksheet: Science", which when opened will show all Science students. The key is setting the 'Course Link' on the template, so that the HOD can then add the 'Class' column to the course marksheet and it'll populate correctly, then she can sort/filter as required.

I needed a "new" laptop [read: I needed a laptop, didn't have one previously] and opted to buy a second hand Thinkpad T420. I managed to get the T420 (with the 1600x900 screen, NVIDIA GPU, 3G modem and dual core i5) for £150, then put in a 256GB Samsung SSD I got for about £90. Total cost £240 and it kicks the rear end out of anything you can buy new for less than £500. So yeah, put an SSD in it

Agree RE 1st template being better, the second one smacks of those ridiculous late night shopping channel ads. One thing that'd make it much more appealing to me as a regular eBay user would be an actual photo of the product. I tend to avoid listings that can't provide a photo of what they're selling - screams scam to me (not saying yours is a scam, just the impression as I'm browsing day to day)

The way I go about it is to give each student a unique ID that is a combination of their contact's ID and their position in the list (using a COUNTIF on all previous instances of the contact's ID to that point in the sheet) Then you use a pivot table to list all the unique contact IDs, and VLOOKUP to pull through the contact details. Column headings are 1 to the highest student number, then you can VLOOKUP to pull through the students' details. Bit of tweaking and manipulating but gets the job done - of course you can drop the lot in to a macro so Joe Bloggs can just run the report from SIMS and get it all formatted how they want

You could do it so that it listed the students vertically i.e. Parent Name, email address, Son/Daughter1 name and tutor group Parent Name, email address, Son/Daughter2 name and tutor group Parent Name, email address, Son/Daughter3 name and tutor group There's no way of getting it to lay them out horizontally though (not without macros anyway)

I can see what you're saying, but I'm assuming you haven't actually tried it? The reason I say that I'm using the official Windows exe, one of the unofficial Android apps and an unofficial compiled Debian package, all synced to Dropbox, without issue (admittedly I've just started using them today, so may experience issues later). The reason I went with LastPass over KeePass originally was so that I didn't have to set up syncing myself, but this has given me the nudge I needed to just do it - it took 5 minutes (you can export your LP passwords to CSV and import them in to KeePass). I know they're mostly fringe cases, but just look at the number of devices people have written KeePass apps for - you won't get that level of compatibility from a proprietary (wouldn't be worth them developing a J2M app as they're likely to have very few customers who need it) KeePass 2 has been around since 2007, yet KeePass 1 is still supported and improved - again, not many proprietary pieces of software that will continue support for a legacy product that long, let alone continue development on it when necessary. If KeePass 3 comes along, you can safely assume 2 will be supported for a long time and if not, you just perform an export/import to switch to the new DB format. There's very little to be concerned about in terms of compatibility - they're all based on the same open source file format and encryption. All that really matters is keeping that DB file accessible which is always possible with Dropbox or similar (I chose Dropbox as there's no official Google Drive support for Linux AFAIK, but when I eventually set up my home server, I'll host the DB there for added security)
