Hi, We're in the process of pruning and tidying the AD in preparation for SharePoint 2007. Our AD is out of sync with our MIS (we use a system called PASS which runs on a SQL Server 2000 back-end). I'm after a tool to easily synchronise the Active Directory user accounts with accounts on the school MIS system. Does anybody know of such a tool? If not what suggestions might y'all have? cheers baronne

which products are best to use on a Windows network... these all seem like Linux solutions. I see DansGuardian and SmoothWall are connected, is SmoothWall based on DansGuardian? What's the connection? cheers Baronne

Ok, so I'm starting to see a bunch of filter systems mentioned here, so we've got (correct me if I'm wrong and throw in suggestions here): DansGuardian - free, open source content filter, runs on Linux SmoothWall - DansGuardian on steroids, runs on Linux and has added features such as Active Directory authentication Censornet - free, open source product with commercial offerings (appliance, etc.) SmartFilter - commercial URL filter SurfControl - commercial URL filter? hi, basically I just can't seem to get it working, I really some help from scratch: we're trying to allow remote access to users' personal files (My Documents) and shared departmental files. I have got DFS setup on the network and I use this to point the web application to the DFS UNC path, eg. "http://extranet.domain.co.uk/dfs/home/" I've got Windows Server 2003 Standard DCs with IIS 6. I'm trying to setup WebDAV and I am really struggling with it. I want to allow users remote access to their files, but I need a bit of hand-holding to go through setting this up. I think my problem is coming from IIS & permissions, but I'm not sure. I have created a web application with it's home directory pointing to the UNC share of the home folders on the network. I also got a handy script which will redirect the currently logged on user to their home share so ideally a user browses in from home to http://extranet.ourdomain.co.uk it will redirect them to http://extranet.ourdomain.co.uk/dfs/home/ and show the web folders. Can anyone guide me through this with permissions, etc. etc. Many thanks Baronne

a good remote control package might be something like http://www.netop.com or go for some sort of VNC thing. Dameware do quite a good little tool... http://www.dameware.com For streaming, you might want to investigate the Windows Media Streaming Server. Teacher demos to the desktop... I spotted this recently: http://www.tightvnc.com/projector/ Record to CD... just use a normal CD burning tool like Nero or Roxio (there are other free ones around, http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ for example)

they could have just bought SmartFilter, would have cost them less than employing someone full time!

it's easy... the government just needs to monitor the proxy sites... there you have dodgy dealings.

SmartFilter is the dog's hootin' nannies. It's got a category for Anonymizers and all those sites you mentioned are locked out. We also blocked the term 'proxy' so the little blighters can't even begin to google for 'em. rock on. :supz: baronne

We've just bought in timetabler but haven't had feedback from the people "doing" the timetables. we'll see.... previously had Nova-T - but I guess they looked elsewhere. I think they might have chosen Timetabler because it is compatible with our MIS - WCBS PASS cheers baronne

Hi there, I am trying to get this solution in place. Do you have a guide or HOWTO on this. I have already tried and I think the part I'm getting stuck on is the permissions on the folders... I just seem to get prompted for a username and password and cannot view the folders even if I try the administrator account! any ideas? cheers Baronne

we create some shares manually some are auto using redirect, but I constantly battle with application data redirects and profiles, so the whole thing really needs a rethink. I have been looking at using ManageEngine's AD ManagerPlus but would like to look for other tools to evaulate too... any suggestions?

Go for the M-Audio 2496 - a great card for around £50...

do you have them all networked on a domain with group policies, etc?

you set the global recipient limits under Exchange System Manager > Global Settings > message delivery (properties) > Defaults > change recipient limits.... alternatively you can do this on individual user accounts under Exchange General > Delivery options cheers Baronne

We have a suite of networked PC's with Cubase & Sibelius on. The trouble I had (and boy did I have plenty of that) - was that Cubase & Sibelius didn't seem to retain settings, so I ended up giving local admin permissions to users on those PCs which I think has resolved some issues. Did anyone else have a problem with a networked suite of Cubase machines with a "locked" down desktop environment, roaming profiles, etc.? baronne
