Does anyone know the default admin password for the 3com Superstack 4400PWR managed switches. I have been left these from a previous IT support co who have gone bust and they have left no details for me to be able to manage them. I can get in with monitor and monitor but that is for viewing purposes only.

The School network/email is hosted by Lgfl and the CC is currently with BT and email with heart.

Hi All Over the Xmas period I am moving our CC (childrens centre) into the main school building. They are currently in seperate locations and have seperate servers both with exchange. The head wants the CC to become part of the main school domain and no longer use there own domain. I will export there mailboxes into pst files and import across to school accounts. The thing that is stumbling me is that the CC server will be switched off and no longer function after move and have already set up forwarders on email accounts to new school accounts but ideally I would like to bring the server across to school and plug it in and leave running for a couple of months with forwarders and auto responses in place. What will I need to do to CC server to acheive this? Obviously it is on different IP address range so will need to give it one from school range, if I do this will mail still flow or do I have to do any configuring of exchange or notify hosting co etc Many thanks in advance

I have not got profiles setup in AD so it is blank. Server is 2008 Laptops are DEll Vostro 150*** All latest updates applied when building image Ruckus was preconfigured by supplier so I dont think that is the issue. Something has just dawned on me that I will try 1st thing tomorrow. My DHCP is on the admin server but I point DNS to my curric server with static to pick up redirections, policies etc but I have not entered WLAN with a static DNS??? But even so I am wondering why the prfiles are so big on a new build/image Will report back atomorrow Thanks

round2it The account I tested was 34mb and took an age to login via wireless. I have desktop redirected via GPO and my docs redirected via AD \\servername\share\%username% I have not set anything for profiles so I presume they are local? Any help/advice would be great as I cannot have the login times for 1 laptop at this lenggth as if all 34 login together which they will it will take all week!! lol

I have just installed a new server and rebuilt 60+ PCs to new domain/image and all is fine. The issue I have is with the 34 new laptops the school have required. They have gone over to a managed wireless solution (ruckus) and i tested a pupil login on the laptops side by side (1 wireless, 1 hard wired) and the wired logged in straight away however the wireless took around 1.5/2 mins to login!! This was only one laptop and is way too long, can anyone help with a solution as to speed the logins up when login in via wireless. The pupils do not have individual logins but by class name so there are around 12/14 accounts. Many thanks

Hi Dave That option did not fix my requirement as all this done was directed my documents to the root of the share and when I applied and clicked on my docs it showed everything inside of this folder ie pupils and staff. I have somehow managed to resolve by adding restict C: drive only and it now only shows the users home drive H:\ mapped) when I click on my documents and not C:\docs etc.. Thanks anyway

Hi Guys Just built my 1st 2008 Server having built quite a few 2000/2003 but things are slightly different and in ffrernt places. I have redirections on the home folders \\curricsvr\home\%username% and when testing on PC all works fine and maps drive etc (also for desktop redirection) However when I click on my documents icon in XP I get navigated to C:\documents and settings\....etc etc..... I cannot for the life of me find the policy that changes it so points to mapped drive...any help would be great also any tips on what policies to put in place for pupils in a primary school. Eg... disable control panel, run command etc Thanks

Thanks Mike Have looked into online backups in the past and found this to be very expensive, dont know if prices have dropped since.

Going to be installing new server on curric over the summer and did not want to go down the route of expensive tape drive/backup exec to do backups. I was thinking of removable USB HD's, say a couple that can be switched weekly and the other one left in safe, anyone gone down this route or would a NAS be better. The only thing with NAS is that it would be stored locally and if the school went up in smoke so would the backups. Anyone use this kind of setup and does it work fine or do you have any other ideas. It is a smalll primary school and data is around 40GB at present. If you could recommend a NAS or external HDs that would be great

Thanks for input guys, may well go down the route of resetting Switches they are 3com stackable switches but we also have 3com intellijacks which I presume will need resetting (again no passwords left!!) and putting this all onto a single network but keep seperate servers.

I want to avoid having to use additional hardware and was hoping to do with trusts and/or making one network but keeping the 2 servers and having static DNS to point to relevant server for desktop redirection etc..... I can set up the trusts etc but not sure how to configure sims on curric

sorry It had been setup by previous support people as a VLAN but they left no details of passwords etc and have gone bust so I cannot login to switches to configure/amend anything. If i plug into curric area I will pick up IP from curric server and if I do admin I will pick up from there.

The school would like sims to be setup in the classrooms for attendance etc. We currently have 2 seperate domains - Admin & Curric on seperate IP address ranges but both on same 255.255.255.0 sub. They both are running seperate DHCPs. To enable me to do this would I have to Loose the DHCP on curric and make the admin server the dhcp for both so 1 network. ? Keep both as is but set up trusts between the 2 (will this work as long as on same subnet but not IP range) Once that is done how do I go about configuring sims/ AD so that the teachers can then access sims from the admin network on there curric PC's If anyone has done this and can give me some advise it would be much appreciated.

raid5 is parity and stripe?? (been a long time since doing it) so I would require 3 x 500GB and still configure the 1st one o/s 80-100GB is that right?

Thanks synack Was thinking 2 x 500GB SAS with raid1 and partitioning 80-100GB o/s and rest for data. It is smallish primary school, AD, File/Print server nothing too heavy

I am about to purchase a new server and would like suggestions as to HD config. The old server currently has 2 HD's 1 x C: 250GB 1 x D: 500GB is this fine to replicate on new or would you suggest raid.. if so what config and HD to use

What sort of battery life do you get out of these, looking for a full day on curriculum then charging overnight?

Thanks again. My mistake it is exchange 2003 with outlook 2007 clients. This article had given me a thought and I had a look at the recepient policy and the default policy was set to the old CC that has moved, I have disabled this so that in users ad email addresses it only now sees the smtp of the current CC and does not know include the other one. I have sent a test to various users at the other CC and am awaiting responses (prob gone home now) but the important thing is I am not getting anything bounced back to me. Will keep you updated (unless you can think of anything else?) Rob
