We're getting to that point, too. Each year it gets worse, as we end up rolling more days into the next holiday year. Next holiday year (from April) there are only gonna be 12 days where we're both here and about 25 where there's only one of us.

When we did this a few years ago the best solution we came up with was to put a black board around the camera to stop reflections of the room in the glass. It wasn't fool proof though, as the sun would still cause visible shadows on the board that showed up in the reflection. I doubt you'll be able to find a 'filter' to do this.

Have you tried with the 'dig' command in terminal? I don't remember the exact details why (possibly something to do with host files and hostname caches etc), but our instructor recommended we test with that. dig hostname- returns IP dig -x 192.168.1.1- returns hostname (in the 'ANSWER SECTION')

Seconded the reverse lookups. I recently went on the Apple Directory Services course and our instructor told us that the three most common causes of problems with networked Macs are DNS, DNS and DNS. Macs require forward and reverse DNS lookups for all machines to work properly, otherwise things won't run smoothly. The problem with integrating Macs into Windows environments is that Windows is far more forgiving towards bad DNS - it can cope a lot better without proper reverse DNS records. Drop a Mac in the equation though, and you're gonna have trouble.

Good good. Glad to hear we operate the same way others do! I posted this morning after a disgruntled teacher Helpdesked a faulty laptop and said 'I've borrowed one for now'. When we updated the call asking for the faulty one back, he marched up, slammed it down on the desk in front of us and went 'There!' before marching out again. Just wanted to make sure we're not being too unreasonable! :-)

Just a quick straw-poll... When a user logs a problem with a piece of equipment, do you expect them to bring it to you (where possible), or are you expected to fetch it from them? Most of our users are used to bringing their laptops etc to us, but there are those who disagree with this practise...

Don't know what's causing your issue, but have you tried putting the proxy login details directly in to System Preferences? Or is that how you're doing it already?

Reading the Register article from above, it seems clear to me that Apple simply weren't making enough money through the XServes. It's disappointing and will definitely leave a lot of people in a sticky situation when something goes wrong - the limited availability of new drives certainly worries me. That said, we should be fine with ours. It's fairly new, pretty well spec'ed and connected to our EMC SAN for storage. So long as we buy in a couple of spares in the next 12 months in case the system drive(s) go...

Interesting indeed. Annoying too, as we've just set up our Mac-only, XServe-hosted OD network this September - we were AD integrated last year, but had issues we couldn't overcome so everything got reconfigured! So long as it isn't the end of the road for OS X Server, most of us will live and I can understand why they're doing it. Mobile platforms with app-stores seem to be Apple's raison d'être just no, and as Dos_Box said, they don't need to re-invent the wheel with server technologies, just integrate themselves into what is already hugely widespread. I coveted the XServe for years before we got one here (like a good little nerd should). Little bit sad they're to be discontinued!

One of our SMT is constantly reminding us to 'be mindful' of everything, which leads me to do a little Yoda impression in my head. Every. Single. Time. "Be mindful of Teh Facebooks, young teaching staff!" Something else which gets on my nerves, although not necessarily stupid office speak, is people who use the phrase 'many thanks'. To me, 'many thanks' is a lazy way of saying 'Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you...' emphatically over and over, which, if staff really said that, would seem out of place when all I've done is reset a password or something. There's no sense of scale (see this on YouTube for clairification of the scale thing). I don't know why it irks me so much, but it does.

Nope. Luckily I know enough not to mix them! I've always put it down to the fact that one of the three cameras I commonly use is DV-based, which from what I've heard has bad/no proper audio syncing as it records... Other cameras (HDD/SD) haven't shown the effect against each other.

You're lucky, then. Clearly you're using identical cameras or something, because when I've done it with mixed manufacturer/model cameras and a mini-disc based audio recording I've hit problems every time!

You can run into difficulties with this solution however, if the recording devices run out of sync over time (which they may well do). I've done this before and ended up with a 2-3 second skew over the course of about an hour. Your best solution would be what 3s-gtech suggested and try to run better quality mics into your cameras - this way the audio will be recorded in sync from the start.

We use these Top Tec ones. Unlike the RM ones listed above, they don't cover the hole in the stand, so you can still get cables through. They're not quite as discrete, though.

My Canon gives me nasty AVCHD .mts files... I batch them into SD avi files then edit with those as proxies; in Premiere I set up timelines with both sets of video imported and disable the mts clips. When I'm done editing, I switch the original MTS files back in and render from the originals. Works for me

Training? In Office? Err, none. I'll be honest, as I don't really use it for my day-to-day duties, there are probably plenty of teaching staff who know more about where to find things than I do!

Well, currently ours is hand coded PHP/HTML/JS etc by me. It gets updated as and when content is emailed to me by the people responsible for actual updates (each page is assigned to a relevant member of staff). It's all hosted by our ISP, EMBC. Over this academic year, we're looking at overhauling the site, moving to a CMS so staff can update it directly and possibly self-hosting, too. I already have a draft design on the go, but have yet to choose a CMS. I do have one in mind to test first, though! (MODx. This tutorial makes it look nice and modular, which I like.) Hopefully there'll be plenty of suggestions in this thread to help the decision!
