WSUS - Clients connecting but failing to download.
ICT_GUY replied to DCUK6's topic in Windows Server 2016
I am having similar issues. Restarting the server seems to wake it up and allow it to farm updates out speedily for awhile, then it sulks again and refuses to send out updates. Clients either sit at "awaiting install" or at "downloading 0%". I have reinstalled wsus, run the clean up wizard and done the following: On your WSUS Server, launch the IIS Manager Open Application Pools Right click ‘WsusPool’ and select ‘Advanced Settings…’ To support the maximum clients, change ‘Queue Length’ from the default 1,000 to 25,000 If your server is NUMA aware, change ‘Maximum Worker Processes’ from the default 1 to 0. If you don’t know if your server is NUMA aware, leave this value default Change ‘”Service Unavailable” Response Type’ from the default HttpLevel to TcpLevel Change ‘Failure Interval (minutes) from the default 5 to 30 Change ‘Maximum Failures’ from the default 5 to 60 Click ‘OK’ to save the App Pool changes From an administrative command prompt, type IISRESET I am still having the issues but its might be a little better. -
Just one thing to add. And please if anyone is using Server 2016 as their domain operational level with a server 2016 print server and has issues please for the love of all that is Holy comment below. My domain operating level is server 2012, the print server is 2012 R2. I have a terrible feeling that some of the problems I am having are due to not running server 2016 with windows 10. Anyone have experience either way please confirm or deny.

Old thread but I thought it prudent to post what happened in the end and what actually turned the doorstops into slightly crappy working laptops. The "FIX" was to update the bios, install windows 10 (instead of windows 7) via WDS (no imaging), install the Lenovo update utility, use that to update all the drivers in one go. This so far has worked to eliminate the issues that I reported. They are still meh laptops but they switch on and log into the network now. The issue with the bios time resetting has not reoccurred and neither has the wireless card falling over issue. Would not buy again, not even for teaching staff.

I would not buy V110s, just don't they are garbage. Want to change the battery? Dissemble the laptop. Want to add ram? Dissemble the laptop. Want to swap out the hard drive? Oh yes, Dissemble the laptop by undoing a dozen screws, pry the back off, void warranty. Oh and windows 7 is an un supported OS. Also the technical support is somewhat CHAOTIC! /rant.

I wanted to add in my experiences. And it has been making me doubt my own sanity. The issue of missing printers plagues certain combinations of computers and users. Some users have lots of issues and some computers seem to be really problematic. (Profile linked). I have tried pushing printers out with group policy user configuration which has worked really well with windows 7 but seems broken with windows 10. I have also used print management to deploy them. This also seems broken with windows 10 and is also not as flexible as group policy since I can target by iprange and user when using gpo. Currently I use both, because ....reasons. When the printers are missing, they don't show up in devices and printers, though sometimes they don't show up there but do in office and other applications. Sometimes they show up as unidentified devices. When they are not available to applications, getting users to run a fix_printers.bat fix which simply calls GPUPDATE works, and quite rapidly at that. I am still testing this. So far though 90% of the time it works 100% of the time. EDIT they sometimes then show up in devices and printers but will be available to applications regardless. /EDIT On the whole windows 10 seems to be a broken operating system that barely manages to do the basics required of a business OS. I have had so many BS issues with basic tasks that it has become one of my most hated operating systems. It is clunky and bloated without improving anything from windows 7. In fact it seems to have more in common reliability wise with windows 98 than windows 7. End of rant.

This has been mentioned before by a different retailer. However customer service in a a cut throat market is so important. We will never use this supplier again on account of a previous quotation bait and switch. Unfortunately these were bought before we black listed them.

I updated the bios on a couple of machines, the issue is present on both the original and updated versions. CPU is a core i5. I will look into battery firmware (I was not even aware that this was a thing now).
-
they are brand new. I have bought them from a local company that I won't name at this point. Since its past a 30 day period they are saying I have to deal with lenovo and the logistical nightmare that goes along with possibly 30 duff laptops. :-/
-
I will consider doing that but it won't fix the issue with the keyboards not working (they don't even work when accessing the bios) :-/ It should be noted that these did work fine, have joined the network, been used for a couple of weeks (though the time and date issue randomly happened as did the network card shutting down). They have all updated with windows update and anti virus. Then they have really started to play up.

I have a batch of 30 lenovo 15isk's that all seem to have bios issues which include the following : Loss of UEFI settings and failing to boot (windows seven using legacy not UEFI is the settings we use). Loss of correct time and date (either set to 2001 or 2099) Windows reports thousands of years in the future. Keyboard typing mostly 6's regardless of what button is pressed (usb keyboard works fine in bios and windows) Fans running at full pelt regardless of temperature. Batteries discharging when laptop is powered down (not hibernation). Wifi and Lan being disabled. I have done a virus scan which came back with nothing. I have tried updating the bios which did not improve matters. lenovo are refusing to refund as they are over 30 days old. My only lead at the moment is that I suspect (it is only a suspicion) that it might be due to battery self discharge though why this should cause these issues when there is an inboard battery back up (though I have yet to double check it is present in our systems) is beyond me. I need help as I have never come across anything like this, neither has the supplier and lenovo are being tight lipped. We have 70 other Lenovo laptops that are set up in an identical manner that have been working fine for years. Thank you in advance.

This is what I was told. I’ve had a look at this. Basically the issue is that apple caching servers can’t interoperate with an internet service that has any NAT rules etc upstream. Here is a support article on the matter buried deep within Apple’s support : https://support.apple.com/kb/PH15443?locale=en_US The key bit is “The Caching server supports clients with OS X v10.8.2 or later and iOS 7 or later, and requires that clients share the same public IP address behind a NAT.” As we filter your internet upstream in the proxy farm there is a whole host of NAT rules in place. So it just won’t work with any ISP that filters your connection upstream. (the technical forums are littered with people having NAT issues with various ISPs) The only way it would work is for you to buy a smoothwall type local filtering device, and for us to provide a raw unfiltered connection to the internet that bypasses the proxy farm but goes through our firewall. We can do that but it will cost whatever the licences for the local device are (circa 3-4k per year I guess).

Our Mac mini that is set up as a caching server is failing to set up an SSL connection through our SWGFL internet connection. The answer from SWGFL is an ever helpful "Nah can't be done mate". It has been suggested that we get a domestic grade connection purely for the macmini without filtering. Our ipads and server have their own vlan and transparent proxy on it. My question is, can I connect the macmini to the unfiltered domestic wired connection for internet access and to the wireless to farm out updates as has been suggested? The ipads would still use the filtered connection.

Yes please :-D

The feeling I get is that they think that the hours that I have are more than the school needs. There is nobody in the school who has the expertise to supervise what I do. There is no additional support, and the work load is increasing and the pay has been frozen for years :-/ My biggest worry at the moment is the imminent doubling of my responsibilities and being stretched over two sites.
-
Designed and built the whole system. Responsible for creating and maintaining the wireless, SSIDs, security and Vlans. There is no external support.
-
Good point well put. I am currently on 13k which is works out at around 17k full time.

Not sure where to put this. Ok I hope you guys will throw in some decent advice. I am currently paid as a technician. (Grade6) I work 27,5 hrs per week. Term time only. I am responsible for the entire school network which I have built and maintained for the last ten years. It has recently grown rapidly to include Areohive wireless and layer 3 switches (which I also have to maintain and upgrade). The network has 152 devices made up of PC's, Laptops, Servers and Ipads. On top of this are the other network devices including switches, printers and AP's. I am also responsible for the school website and email system. And the design and planning of the network upgrades. Plus I have the usual technician stuff to do, like downloading videos making photo stories, dvds ect. I do not have any other support to rely on. In the future the network is going to grow by at least another 30 Laptops plus ipads. However on top of this, SMT want me to take over a second network and integrate it into ours. This is on a separate site with a suite of 34 PC's and at least another 20 PC's. Also they have a separate server and wireless system. I am due to have a meeting very soon about this. I feel that I am already working beyond by pay grade and that the job I am doing is that of systems manager (Grade 11). What I am asking is What hours do you think are needed to look after this size of network and what pay grade should I be looking at? All Help thanked and appreciated.

Thank you. Yes we did, and I had heard about the white listing. Is there an idiots guide to creating apple ID's for education? Best practice guide or some such? It might be stupid question but I take it you have to create an email address for every ipad as well?
-
Once you have it worked out. Getting your head around it is the hard part. They whole system at the moment is a giant kludge. Ipads are stand alone devices and have been shoehorned into an environment they have not been designed for. It is not intuitive and there does not seem to be a definitive guide. (things are changing too fast) Meraki does make it easier.

I have difficulty getting staff to add a downloaded filter to gmail . Oh gods....

I am going through this at the moment. We have the direct internet connection to SWGFL by passing county. We have two vlans, and three SIDs. We had to invest heavily in our wireless infrastructure as that greatly affects user experience. I know first hand how dire the internet connections are in Dorset. Plus you were one of the more vocal people at the broadband meeting I seem to remember. As for devices. We have Ipads. It is a headache. Lots of hoops to jump through and they cost a lot to buy. Near vertical learning curve and very little seems to make sense at first. It is rumored that things are in for a major shake up next year. Biggest hurdle for me is managing SMT / Teacher expectations. But I am 90% there, I hope. If I had to make a choice at the moment. I would go with windows tablets. In an ideal world I would have chrome books but they are not as desirable as ishinny devices.

Shared apple ID on shared devices please advise. Info > I am almost ready to deploy ipads. We have 50, 14 for staff and the rest for kids. They will be shared. They will be locked down with only approved apps installed and they will only be updated by me. (Including the staff ones). SMT want the teacher ipads to be tools and not used as a personal device. I am aware of the changes rumored to be coming next year in regards to Apple ID's and Education ipads. This should help. I have been told there are pros and cons for shared apple ID's on ipads. I don't know which way to go. All advice welcomed.
-
Wow that would make a huge difference. Any idea if it will be backward compatible with already deployed ipads?

Pocket screws. Little presents from the IT gods.
