I'm looking into the NComputing desktop virtualisation kit. I have a couple of locations it could be useful to reduce costs. However, I still require the users to have easy access to a usb port which the X550 does not have (Not without installing additional usb ports on the PC and numbering each one to a corresponding terminal) but the L230 box does have. 1. Has anyone used the X550 PCI card with a L230 box? 2. Does anyone know of a UK supplier that has the X550 in stock? 3. Is anyone here using this kit 'in anger' and offer any advice?

I would suggest a moodle setup to start with as it has little cost to it. Once staff see what a VLE is and how it can be used they will ask for extra bits and bobs. It is then that you will be able to make a better judgement on what you require out of a VLE and compare that to those that on offer. Whatever you choose you should be able to transfer courses in moodle to the new system.

It may be worth weighing the cost of laptops over a 5 year period against the cost of running an IT Suite. eg; a replacement laptop keyboard would cot you in the region of £40 each. Batteries will last approximately 2 or 3 years at a cost of arount £40 each plus the cost of disposing of the old ones. Labour costs compared to PCs are higher as installs even remote installs are time consuming. I know 440 laptops here and still climbing

Many thanks for everything you have done for Edugeek over the years, the time and effort given to get edugeek as far as it has come has been phenomenal. Enjoy the break - no doubt you'll still lend a hand now and again

There seems to be a lot of pins missing on the User Map in the Birmingham Area. LINK -
Edugoddess seems to be free though and I've got a big pair of sharp scissors if required

Taking it a little (famous last words!) further, it may be useful if the class lists popped up in a new window.

Mandy has better pom poms anyway :cheer2:

It depends on the AP, wireless cards in the laptops and size of profiles. 25/AP is pushing the best kit to its limit. The ruckus kit seems to be the best for this at the moment if you compare costs with the high end kit available. You may get away with using more than one AP in a room, but you would need to manage your channels very carefully if you put APs in nearby rooms above, below or either side. If you just want to use it in one room for 25 laptops then I'd go for 3 APs, as 8 per AP is the recognised recommendation by most manufacturers.

Any plans for a larger HDD and screen and an option to use a DVD drive?
-
So does that mean it will withstand heavy input from a ham fisted student with a biro? If so does that mean that because of its robustness users have to hit the screen with a little more effort than a normal touch screen? I'm not trying to be awkward on purpose - honest!

Just noticed that in the specs . So............. How 'stab proof' is it?

Can they still pull the keys off the keyboard?

So you would worship the Edugod just because it says so in Wikipedia? How easily led you are

Grateful if you could send me the details of the teacher version. What is covered in the technical version? We run ours on a Win 2003 box with full Apache, Php & MySql

He obviously knows nothing about Moths On a serious note - if he is suggesting that people with Dyslexia are under achievers due to poor education, how does he explain the A level students we have that get A* . And how does he explain those that suffer from dyslexia but with certain coloured lenses are able to read and write exceptionally better? Agreed - the man is a muppet

How about the first person to: Get GD off the fence, catch Geoff out by asking a question he does not know the answer to and get Russ to denounce RM Gets a mug and/or the post of edugod for a year.

So far I've found the benefits far outweigh any niggles you come across. -
I'm afraid that does nothing to inspire me The staff here prefer the more corporate look and feel that big pictures and icons to links looks unsuitable. I have no doubt that some will like it. From what you say, moodle was badly instigated and managed at the time. We are getting to the stage where teaching staff (some, not all!) are experimenting with moodle with great success. Some of this may be down to the fact that we have sessions where staff show off their lessons and how they receive results and feedback from students.

It looks like a primary school layout. If it was shown to staff here it would be laughed out the door. I'm sure it does what it says on the tin but it looks horrible!

What does the secondary school version look like?
