Actually, I'm not suer if it is that. As the kids that were blocked on one Computer, were able to check their jobs on another computer. If it was an inappropriate word, it would be blocked on any machine. Thanks for the idea though.

I don't personally administer it, but the LEA use one. Could that be it? (actually that would make sense, anything that could be deemed remotely adult tends to get blocked, and this was PHSE stuff about adult life) Thank you.

We have an intermittant problem with the flash games coming up as 'Content Blocked', I've phoned the help desk who helpfully told me it was a problem at my end, and nothing he could do. I just wondered if anyone else had encountered it. I've got Flash 11 installed, so I don't think it's due to the wrong version of flash, but could be something else I need to upgrade.

Our monitors are screwed on to the desk lids, so this was a massive problem for me (8 screws just to push a monitor cable back in). I ended up buying some cables that have a little clip on them so they can't fall out, and fingers crossed, it hasn't happened since.

The quote is 120 for Ranger Remote 220 to upgrade the old 40 licenses 295 for 10 more licenses. So, would be £515 for 10 more licenses- does that seeem right?

I think it's the other way around, we don't need the remote but we do need the Primary? My understanding was the Remote was the classroom control software that we use in the ICT suite to view what the students are doing and lock their machines. I don't need that on the staff machines. All I really need is the bit that controls user profiles. (Maybe it does other useful stuff but none that I am aware off) I haven't been paying for upgrade protection as I don't want to upgrade.

Just to clairfy, I'm not trying to avoid licensing. I'd just like to either buy 2 licenses for a reasonable price, or set up the new machines to pick up their desktops without using ranger at all.

When we had our new ICT Suite installed it came with 40 licenses for Ranger Primary. There are 33 machines in the Suite, and over the last year I've added 7 more staff machines in classrooms. I want to add 2 further staff machines taking the total upto 42, however, I am now out of licenses. I contacted Stone about buying 2 more licenses, and they have come back with a quote for £700. This comprises an upgrade to Ranger Remote, upgrade to Ranger Primary and 10 more licenses. We have no budget for £700, nor do we want to upgrade. I'm quite happy with the Ranger that have and can't justify spending the time on the upgrade, nor the cash for functionality we don't need or want. All I need to use the Ranger for on these new machines is to pick up the desktops when the staff login. Is there anyway around this?

it's version 3.2.2.16 and Server 2003, windows xp with service pack 3 I think it's permissions related, as if I log in as a domain administrator it works fine, but if I log in as a normal user (or even RangerManager which usually has full permissions) it doesn't - and my icon doesn't appear which would suggest it can't see ana necessary directory.

Well, that's solved the first problem. If it has to have a specific name I do wish it would have said that. With their being an ini file, I incorrectly assumed that as long as I put the path in the ini file, it would find it. i can now use it as administrator, but if I log in as a normal user, I am getting an Active X error. One stop forwards, 2 steps back as they say...

yes, and I can browse directly to that file so I definitely have permission for it.

I have just moved Junior Librarian onto a new machine, and I cannot work out how to set up the permissions to allow anyone to run it. I've got the database installed on the server, and the folder is shared as \\myserver\juniordata this folder has full permissions granted to Everyone Administrators Domain Admin Domain Users System Yet everytime I log on from a different computer within the domain (even as administrator) I get a message to say I don't have permission to access the database or an invalid path has been specified Also, if i run setup, it says it can't find a share with library data in it - obviously the same problem, but I am at a loss as to why, as I can navigate to the folder and save/modify/delete a file in it. we don't have a support contract with MLS and with a quote of over £300/year we won't be getting one. Any suggestions?

I use ShowPoint, it just displays the newest powerpoint in a folder, so if you update the powerpoint it automatiaclly picks up the changes. Its very simple but it works really well.

I understand Becta used to have guidelines on teh expected number of PCs to Students in a school. Becta is gone, does anyone know if there are still guidelines? We have OFSTED looming and I've been asked to find out.

This is where I start to look ignorant, as I am not even sure if I can answer the questions.... We have Server 2003, we use Ranger to set up the User desktops, profiles, permissions etc. Are they roaming or mandatory, I'm not sure. All Staff have the same desktop, All kids in a specific year group have the same. When they log on, the 'My Documents' is their own My Documents no matter where they are. We use a logon script to set up printers and shared drives. The shared drives worked, the printers didn't.

I don't have volume licensing, but you are allowed to downgrade from W7, however I can't get the media to do it.

I now know what XP mode is, but I didn't at the time. I was under the impression that it was 'dual boot', which some machines do appear to offer. I had also investigated XP downgrade rights, and felt assured that I was within my rights to put XP on the machine if it didn't do what I needed it too. However, that is proving difficult. it's very easy to say 'move on', but I am the sole technician in a small school. 3 years ago we were sold server 2003 and 32 PCs for our IT suite which all run Windows XP. We also have around other desktops around school, and laptops used by staff. They are all on XP. I need to put a couple of computers in classrooms. It's not appropriate for them to be different to the rest of the school. When the IT suite needs replacing in a couple of years, then I expect we will move to W7, but it's not something I want to do at the moment.

I know htis is an old thread, but I am having a nightmare with this issue. I am quite furious that we appear to be forced to upgrade before we choose too. We are a small school, and everything is currently on XP using Ranger to manage desktops etc, with Server 2003. Well, I ended up buying an Windows 7 Acer Veriton as a test case. I was assured it would run in XP mode, but if not Microsoft offer downgrade rights to XP. However, I managed to join it to the domain but it's not picking up user desktops and none of the printers seem to want to install, plus it's not going to be the same look & feel as the rest or the machines, and in this situation that was an issue. So, I decided to downgrade it to XP BUT it simply won't install XP. Acer haven't provided an XP disk, but I have a selection of XP disks from other manufacturers. (HP, Toshiba, Samsung, Stone) It doesn't seem to matter which disk I use, it appears to start and then it just stalls after a few minutes. So I don't know what to do - do I spend time trying to get W7 to work, or trying to install XP. I've spent far too much time on both options so far and had no success with either.

Please can you tell me what you ordered, and from whom, as I need some new desktops and we are definitely not ready to go to Win 7 just yet. I really want something with an XP downgrade included.

we back up to Tape. I think I'm going to look into putting new drives into the Server. I'm fairly sure we've got another 2 years left before it's paid for!

The old system is only 3 years old It was installed in August 2008. It should last longer than 3 years shouldn't it?

We aren't particularly scrimping for cash, I am just trying to understand what the various options are and what they will cost. There are 4 drives in the server, 2 in use and 2 as duplicate copies (I don't know the correct terminology). there is 1 empty drive bay. When I enquired with the Stone engineer about putting another drive in the empty bay I got the impression that I couldn't as would need 2 bays for the duplication. That was when he recommended the NAS. just to add - the LEA advisor suggested I pop to PC World and get an external disk drive, so I am working pretty much in the dark

So, if I used it for photographs, and backup storage it would be ok, but not so good to use as say the staff resources shared drive?

Hi, I'm the sole ICT tech for a middle school (320 pupils). I muddle on ok normally, but am a bit out of my depth on this. I hope someone can help? We have a Stone server running Windows 2003. It was put in before I arrived, and it's not very big. We have 270gb for the entire school's storage - so it's full.... I asked our Stone engineer and he suggested we get a NAS unit, and l got the impression from him it was as simple as plugging it in, and connected it to the network, and then we'd have a nice empty drive, but reading some post on here it seems there is some setup, they don't always talk to the network, can be slow and not really suitable for permanent storage. Is there another option?
