  1. Yes we are using Zenworks to a degree however we don't apply policies to staff machines (I think the agent may be installed)
  2. No, because we use Novell here rather than Active Directory . ...But I assume your tips can apply to the local machine gpedit.msc
  3. A lot of our machines seem to be 'remembering' the proxy settings given to Internet Explorer and we don't use a proxy these days! Tried brute forcing them out with IE config in local gpedit.msc but no joy, they end up comiong back! Any other things I can try (Except convert everyone to Firefox )
  4. We have some machines with memory card readers and when we Ghost them the memory card readers get picked up on imaged machines as 'new hardware' and therefore get assigned E:, F:, G: and H:. This causes major headaches as there are some network drives with those letters, so we assign the memory card readers L:, M:, N: and O: Is there a script that can do this rather than having to use Computer Management?
  5. Sorted - Had to use a Microsoft utility to kill all traces of the VM, then setup prompted me to run the VM installer. Phew! 5 hours of my day gone...
  6. We are trying to roll out Visual Studio 6 on some XP SP2 computers while it is nice and quiet. Anyway the problem is Visual Studio will install then throw up an error about being unable to register a certain .dll file in the registry (Something java related, I would post the exact error but I'm having my lunch!) and from reading around it seems that the Microsoft Java VM needs installing. But every time the MS Java VM installation is run (We have a copy of the setup on our shared area) it just says 'Installation complete' without actually installing the thing. Tried installing Visual Studio 6 on a 'basic' XP SP2 virtual machine image and it works fine as it prompts to update the Microsoft VM itself before the installation even begins! Don't really want to have to do a fresh install of the computers in question as they have a LOT of specialist media software etc.
  7. They are Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy SE 7.1 sound cards, and the motherboard is Intel D945GCNL.
  8. We bought a load of Stone machines including some 'high specification' towers which included both a dedicated Gfx (ATI) and Sound (Creative) card. The problem is the students want to use the front audio ports for their projects and suddenly the back of a PC is too dangerous! Will it just be a internal cable that I could possibly attach to the Creative sound card? I did try enabling on board sound but then you need to install the drivers etc and you can't use both onboard and PCI sound, it has to be one or the other! cheers
  9. We have a commercial help desk solution which also keeps track of software product keys etc. We then ensure a link to the helpdesk intranet page is placed on staff desktops. The problem? Well currently there is over 100 jobs on it, staff get impatient and duplicate their requests and they don't really give many clues! ('Computer not working near the window'...Might help if they at least provided a room number!!)
  10. We bought some new machines over the summer, and some of them came with ATI graphics cards with both a VGA port and DVI port. (Plus I think a DVI>VGA converter) So in theory is it possible to run the computer display and the projector by plugging both into the graphics card eliminating the need for a VGA splitter box? Cheers
  11. Hmm. In which case the exam was quite misleading then! As I seem to remember it said 'Choosing the fastest method' but did not IIRC state if that meant the fastest possible backup or the fastest possible recovery! It is at times like this I really wish the results would show you the questions you got wrong!
  12. Yay! I was DREADING this exam as I have virtually NIL experience in Server 2003 and have only just began picking it up (At work we use Novell!) Anyway about 25% of the exam was on backups! 8O I'm still puzzled and want to get my mind clear...Which is the 'quickest' form of backup - Incremental or Differential?
  13. OK cheers, we were just wondering why the machines had the port there! (Some of them were covered by little caps but we had to remove these before the kids had chance to start using them as classroom missiles...)
  14. Just playing with our delivery of Stone machines and they have front firewire however it is not plugged in, the connection looks the exact same as a front USB connector so can we stick it in the spare 'Front_USB' slot on the motherboard or isn't it that simple? The motherboard in question is a INTEL D945GCNL Cheers
  15. I'm playing about with my home network and eval copy of Windows Server (Great fun ) Anyway I set a custom wallpaper up via Active Desktop GPO but then Windows XP decides to disable transparent icons (i.e. there is a border of the solid background colour round text of icons). Also I wish to map a certain user to a Outlook file stored on the server (Mapped as a P:\ drive) so when they open Outlook it automatically sets the file location to the file stored on P:\ Cheers!
  16. OK tried all the patches, everything. Still the same ! (Although it sometimes goes away for a little bit and just as you think YES!!! it comes back!) It seems to be something to do with the NAL Explorer (Which is loaded at startup) as if you delete that from the Startup folder the problem goes away.
  17. The internet radio gizmo is £49.99 at Dixons etc
  18. I'm not the main Novell guy here so I can't go into specifics...It is ZFD 7 on XP SP2 clients We already have the UPH Clean installed, unless we need to run anything to get it working? Will try the NAL restart utility
  19. On our network we have been trying to implement ZenWorks. We have set it up so that when a user logs in to a workstation, they are assigned a 'Volatile' profile on the local hard drive (i.e. their own folder under Documents and Settings). This means the student can in theory trash the PC (Well as far as they can in the 'Users' group!) and then when they logout the profile is deleted from the local hard drive and everything is back to normal ready for the next user. However when we have been testing this, any time someone has made changes and logs out Explorer.EXE crashes with a 'the memory could not be 'written'' fault. My theory is Zen is trying to delete the profile before Explorer has finished its session. Any tips?
  20. ...I think I have found the easiest form of wireless security : MAC Filtering If a MAC address ain't defined in the wireless settings, it ain't gonna see the network or even the access point. But if it is, it can connect to the network without any messing around with long keys and such!
  21. We need a VCR with VideoPlus. Finding it very difficult to find one!!! Any ideas?
  22. Well we did get in touch with iDesk, they said the warranty expired in June (Unlucky!) but they would stick another year on for £50 odd quid a desk (exc VAT). Which is probably the cheapest and safest route to go down because these PSUs seem to have gone the way of the Dodo! At least it was just the PSU that went, a handy tip for any iDesk owners is that the PC is standard kit so a normal PSU can be attached!
  23. Does anyone know where to source a replacement PSU for an i-Desk (Low profile one?) The one pulled from the system is a Enhance ENH-1120 200W W/PFC Cheers
  24. googlemad

    iPhone

Its also sold 500,000 units in the first day or two! And considering they double up on the production cost it ain't going anywhere soon
  25. Does anyone know where we can get a free no nonsense vids:MJPG codec so video files can be embedded into Word (WHY?!) Tried one or two but they all seem to be evaluations and that is no good when we need to install it on quite a few computers
