  1. That's not quite. Get information out of SIMS.net is quite easy. It's the getting information into SIMS that's a problem. Unless you can contrive a CTF/ATF or get your head and wallet around business objects then there is no real way of importing data in bulk. They seem to make it easier to extract your data and take it to a competitor MIS rather than vice versa
  2. I think you've have most of it. There are three options: 2 read-only and 1 read/write 1) Report engine: Using commandReporter excutable for data extraction to files (XML,CSV,TXT,RTF,DOC,XLS) 2) IMS: Populating/updating VLE users/groups using web service protocol 3) Third party SDK (Business Object): Read/writes access to SIMS database via paid-for tools and API docs.
  3. Er OK thanks and we're not talking trap and pony are we
  4. You'd think but it's something to do with covering support costs.
  5. Thanks Tony but I probably didn't make it clear in my earlier post: I'm acutally coming by public transport.
  6. @Jonsi I don't think attendance data can be imported in the same way you can import assessment data from Excel spreadsheets into Assessment manager. If you rely on a 3rd party solution for electronic registration then it has to be one which has licensed the SIMS database API from Capita. Bromcom and TASC Software's PARS are two examples. If you really like a challenge you could create your own virtual OMR device and use that to do a covernsion off attendance data into something SIMS undertands.
  7. I have had a look at the map but I think I will still need some help with directions. So I get to Kettering station then what?
  8. The amount I'm having to spend on the train fare, I think I'll just have enough left over for a glass of water and half a naan
  9. This was an OK plan up to August if you had the diskspace for copies or could control the backup window. Under the new system passwords are tied to the RDBMS/server and not the database. So you may have to hand out new passwords o staff after a bare metal recovery or transfer to another server. Oh joy
  10. probably not as in most path issues you would get an error shich as:
  11. Somebody in the department thought it would be a good idea to use Dell's factory Windows install on a new Latitude D620 rather than clean re-install. Bung on the standard school apps. Job done. This seemed to work until I had to sort out a problem and need to use the command prompt for diagnostics. Every I type a command and pressed Windows kept tell me it couldn't find the command. But here's the funny thing. The error would something like You could run programs with shortcuts from explorer or the Start menu. Just not by typing the command using the NT commnad prompt UI. Another strange thing was if that if I used the Windows 9x COMMAND.EXE UI then I could run the program. It's no real workaround as you loose a lot of the enhancements in CMD.EXE such as long file names and file completion. Now I suspect some people might say "Use Windows! DOS is dead". Well technically the command prompt it is still Windows but that's beside the point. The main problem is that this bug stops certain 16 bit apps from working e.g. Nova-T, even when launched from the GUI. The only answer has been to reinstall Windows. This what Dell did when I raised the issue. They sent someone round to do a vanilla install of XP Is there a less drastic way to solve this issue. I just don't seem to have much luck with OEM images. There always seems to be some hidden issue I have to sort out
  12. That would be the case if Richard was setting up server (e.g. Apache or Samba) but he is thinking more about what to do for a workstation.
  13. Eh? What's wrong with just B1-A1? If you enter the time in hh:mm format then Excel should understand that it's dealing with time and do the correct type of maths. Also don't forget to subtract time off for lunch, if people allow you to have lunch that is
  14. You can do this using the registeration section of the Student Details screen. Is he just taught in the year beneath or does he also register out of year? You may have to change both values. Also you will have to change his timetable using Academic Management in the Curriculum Assignment by Student screen.
  15. Is this possible? At the moment unless you have access to where the template is stored then Info path gives an error saying the template doesn't exist. Is the idea that the forms would be tied to a website so this problem wouldn't normally occur. It would be nice to be able to edit some forms offline such as when at home. Any ideas?
  16. How about this site Full Microsoft Office 2007 for £61 pounds! They have a testimonial from Steve Beswick at Microsoft so the site may be legit.
  17. One good thing about the Dell Latitudes we bought a couple of years ago is that they come with an on-site repair warranty. This means that in most cases a teacher is only deprived a day's worth of use. I just wish we hadn't had to make so much use of the warranty. Swings and round abouts, I guess
  18. Good home needed for 40 or more thin client terminals Just terminal unit and power adaptor. No packaging, manuals, keyboards or mice. Remigaging needed so will require use of Compaq Rapport software or some *nix based solution. Sold as seen. No warranties given. Any takers?
  19. The trouble is that all the blanking and non-class codes are done in Nova-T 6 while student assigments are done in Academic Management in SIMS.net proper. As you say, the only way of doing what is asked for an electronic student timetable is to create a dummy course 'At College' and assign students to it on the relevant days. This might cause problems with pupil reconcilliation in the Spring Census though. If this is for registers then all you would have to do is bulk entries of code B (i.e. educated off-site) in Attendence. You Lesson-Monitor/Register should then show the B in the class register of the class the student would have been in if he wasn't going to college.
  20. According to Capita, both the August and September releases will run on both MS SQL 2000 and 2005. You have to have to upgraded the SQL server by the end of October in readiness for the November main release which will be SQL 2005 only.
  21. You could argue that the differential backup is marginally faster because it doesn't have to reset the archive attribute
  22. The SIMS server shouldn't be a danger to the rest of the network if you're running it as a member server. The server tends to be more stable than the clients. Then again, are you about to install the SIMS server software on machine which is already running other applications and/or databases?

    HP Cashback

Normally I have good feelings about HP/Compaq thanks to the quality of their products. It's just why do they have to make claiming on their cash back offers so awkward. It's bad enough that they don't just reduce the price upfront. First you have to send a claim form with proof purchase and then "raise an invoice" before you get they money back. An invoice? But hang on. They're the ones that sold me the computer stuff. What product or service am I invoicing them for? I suppose this make sense to somebody at HP marketing
