Stolen from a popular Japanese Manga/Anime since I thought the alias would be cool (at the time), with the A dropped since people in certain DJing crowds got upset that I was 'stealing' their DJ alias (in reality: I've been using the 'Frieza' alias for 7 years, and they've been "on the scene" for two). Most MC's say DJ Fries instead of DJ Freeze which is how I consider it to be pronounced. Meh, It's an alias!

More importantly, barely anyone writes viruses for 3.1 these days. It's all win32 stuff tbh! A lot of companies still use old computers/OS because of reliability reasons!

Quoted for truth, Exchange 2007 is a nightmarish setup, especially with regards to certificates, let alone the fact that you MUST run it on 64bit machines, and all the other fiddly pre-requisites required.

We will always be needed to plug in the cable (the one that connects them to the Internet in this case). My view: All this talk of cloud computing on the Internet blah blah is basically just throwing us back to the way of dumb (but slightly more intelligent) terminals. The moment the connection is severed we're stuffed and for educational establishments typically everyones connection is piped down one line. Cut that line, the entire network dies. In short, if we do get removed from the equation they'll miss us when we're gone and it is likely they'll want us back in due course.

If you do go the scripty route, just call the above many times for each folder you want to change (except the one you don't). There's various ways of getting folder names out nice and quick (if they're all conveniently on the same computer in the same master folder a dir /b /ad > c:\folders.txt will do you nicely. Or you could use the method as mentioned above, depends what you need really

If you're like me and despise IIS with a passion, Install Apache instead of IIS on a machine you'dd like to nominate as 'web server' for the Intranet. Roll with the Win32 without Crypto, unless you plan to get certificates and all that gumph. Then, if you want some dynamic page stuff going, I would go with PHP as a server-side scripting language. If you intend to hook into a database for storing various things, MySQL is a good option, and if you want a PHP interface to administer it through, you can use PHPMyAdmin. There's usually quite a good amount of documentation for all this setup although you may need to delve into ini files to tweak settings to your hearts content. Do all this on a linux box and you have yourself a LAMP installation, but windows works just as well (sorta -- XP has a connection limit, so use something that's meant as a server OS). Check every client is still operational. Although I know that there's no server/network to be had you can still go around clients, login locally, check for any glaring problems (like if the machine is on its last legs). Delete any old profiles if you do things that way, tidy up the local disks and move on. We do this after major holidays usually to make sure the entire network is solid for the new year start (they still manage to mess things up on the first day though!) Think outside the network. Of course if all the electricity is off, and you all have absolutely NOTHING to do in terms of paperwork, manual labour or whatever and MUST be on-site, may I recommend the sports hall for some light sporting entertainment? Or even music if you fancy a jam. I'm sure there's something you could do though!

Speaking as a tech, I personally only start pushing back when someone above starts pushing me dangerously close to cliff edges. I am never unreasonable when it comes to being asked to do stuff, and I'll only decline if I feel it is way out of my field of expertise or nigh on impossible to fit in with the current workload. If they don't like being ordered around, find out what their story is. If they are being asked to do stuff they can't handle, train them. If they're being given too much work to handle, manage it. If they're just being plain unreasonable find out why. There's probably reasons behind someone not doing something.

I would run with a script on logon to re-add the printer. Also, if it's an IP printer, you can set up a port for the printer to point to the IP address avoiding the entire print share malarky. Of course, that entirely depends on your setup and how you use print management software e.t.c.

VNC can be quite flakey on windows. There's one machine we can view but can't interract with at all (the settings are all correct) and there's another one which just goes absolutely nuts (kills you, stops you from using it, garbled display e.t.c.) which is a 64 bit machine.

Not as much as you'dd imagine, it costs a lot to run all these characters plus look after a guild. My in-game bank account is usually levelled at 200k.

Hmmm possibly so, but the burning question there is -- how to detect what regkeys are needed? I was always under the impression that ntuser.dat stored the regkeys for any particular user on a machine, and that making a default user profile with said ntuser.dat file would have the regkeys for every user that logs in (assuming the profile isn't on the system already). But, I'll try it the manual way and see what happens, now I just have to find out what keys (if any) are being pushed.

Developed school intranet from scratch. Switched over to a totally new network including massive amounts of new XP clients. Added a new wireless system to the school. New email system (Exchange) plus email for everyone on (and off!!) site. Installed IWB's to every classroom. Implemented loads of admin tools including mass-logon, shutdown, remote controllers, user tracking e.t.c. Set up a Creative Technology Suite including a large steroscopic display, 30 laptops, 19 clients and video conferencing kit. Obvious stuff like a user account for everyone on-site, upgrading stuff e.t.c. Definitely WAY more than this, don't have enough time to list EVERYTHING!

ARRRRRRGH! Blasted software! Okay so here's whats up. Got Sequel2, did an Administrative Install, activated and all that lovely business. The software gives you a little nag screen: "Register online, Already registered, Remind me later". So click Register online or Already registered all is good and it shuts up. Except... Only for that user profile. Yup, every single user is gonna be asked if they have registered already. How can I shut it up for everyone? I've tried making a default profile with the right application data that it generates after being run and clicked on, but no dice. Anyone had experience with this? Help muchly appreciated.

NAAAAAAAAH Where we are they've excelled the ICT provision by a few years to bring it dangerously close, but the build is still almost a decade away... With the way the government are going, chances are we'll get outsourced and the schools ICT provision will plummet to an all-time low and we STILL don't get the build. Government win-win, schools lose.
