Southampton used to have a 'crystal maze' type place it was a bizarre series of computerised puzzles and games involving avoiding infrared lasers and the like. Very similar to the actual crystal maze except more computerised in order to survive general public consumption. So in a roundabout way kinda played it!

I'd code video games. Scrap that, I'd PLAY video games. Now that's a job!

Realistic answer: On a tropical beach with beautiful weather on a lounger chilling out. Drink in one hand, laptop on a table to my side. Girls at my side feeding me grapes and fanning me. Interviews where questions are asked like that are generally LIE driven. Anyone who answers off drivel like they want to scale the heights of said company blah blah blah is a dirty liar. Most people are only in it for the money. The majority of people are looking for a stopgap. Your success at said interview is all down to how good your poker face is and how good you are at lying. The best interview I ever had we discussed what our favourite video games were over a few pints!!

Independant. The local independant bunch plan to implement a whole bunch of stuff that should've been done ages ago. Other parties? They just rattled off what they did in the past (bar the bad things). Example: Previous council decided it would be better in the interests of the people (or rather, their own bank accounts) to knock down the local youth club (which keeps the kids off the streets) and replace it with a block of flats. Said independant candidate plans to rebuild said youth club (although not necessary back over the flats). A council that actually does something constructive for the community, that's what I'm talking about. Another corking scandal from my previous council was that they used to have a recycling service, we paid extra and sorted stuff into recyclable boxes. Turns out that despite taking our cash and wasting our time they just threw it in with the regular trash anyway. So much for recycling. All the other candidates have an agenda only for the bigger party. I'm voting for someone who will make a difference to the local area. Well, we hope!

The daily mail claim that video games will turn everyone into MURDERERS. Holy crapola batman! We have a bunch of mass murderers working in a school, and all these poor innocent school children will grow up to be murderers too. OH NOES! we're getting a similar issue with another machine now (a laptop). Doesn't pull any of the GPO settings although gpresult says it does! We gave up in the end with the original machine, it just doesn't do group policy! It USED to do it mind, but now... no. For the record this laptop indicates that it is NOT connected over a slow link, so the issue must lie elsewhere. I find it particularly odd that some machines fail and the rest are fine. I've also noticed that when its installing software every time it whizzes through a list (the software IS installed, but it seems like its attempting to do it again and then give up), thought that was a bit odd too. Any ideas? *stabs microsoft*

Don't worry about it, the letter is probably just a scare tactic. Besides, if all your software is legal and they try and forcefully investigate your machines you can kick their sorry asses out the door when they find nothing wrong. I'm not sure they can legally enter the premesis without a search warrant either. Can anyone confirm? Speaking of scare tactics: We have no TV at all. And the BBC are VERY invasive with threatening letters and demanding to search the premesis. Can't they get it through their thick skulls that not all of us watch TV and not all of us want to pay their crappy licence?

Please clarify -- per meg? Do you mean per mb/sec or do you mean per meg downloaded? If it's the latter and ISP's try this I forsee a lot of ISP's losing a LOT of custom very damn fast. Consider the amount of us that play games lots -- thats a lot of data going back and forth. And god forbid any of us try downloading a few hundred megs of DirectX SDK or whatever... A bill for a few hundred in a month? That'll make people close accounts quick and UK telecoms will regress back into 56k for all but the die-hard. Other European countries provide cheap, fast broadband (see: the netherlands, I have a friend who pays less than me for BB and is about 10 times faster) so why can't we? It's BT trying to squeeze as much cash out of us as possible if you ask me! As for me, I'm with PLUSNet, They're not too shabby but I hear they've been acquired by BT (which is probably why you've been throttled). I've not suffered such throttling problems (or not noticed) but the only thing I cannot abide is their cheap and nasty customer service. I was on the phone to them once for TWO HOURS and then they just hung up on me.

We have a reprographics person specifically for that who lives among a suite of photocopiers. The paper and the labour is nothing to do with us, we just make sure the computers work 'guv.

I've never learned C# as such. I've always coded in C++ mainly due to coding for mac, linux and windows (impossible in C#) but now and then I have to code for Windows specific thing. I code games as a hobby, C# is FAR too clunky for serious development in that area.

Manage to fix your problem? I've been a bit slow to spot this thread! Dunno about VBS, but I've coded C++ apps in .net that bring up this error. It happens if you try to access things across UNC/mapped drives (.net has a pile of BS 'security' additions that prevent code being executed in this way unless you 'appease' the security -- what nonsense!). If you're running it off a network, try copying it to a local machine, failing that check if its trying to do network file access.

It's more fun when teachers get the problem of the mis-spelled username, this kind of thing can't be put down to lack of computing knowledge. Just pure stupidity unless they suffer dyslexia (which is a serious and reasonable explanation).

Haha! I used to go to Bournemouth University, why do they make students make so many surveys? Have you tried their internal email system, I used to get spammed with at least 5 surveys a day from other students in the uni alone.... Good luck with your dissertation!

Over here we have made students (and parents) fully aware that we maintain logs, read logs and actually have sanctions in place to deny access to the Internet for a period of time should a student be using a proxy portal. Bypassing our internet security to gain access to a resource they're not allowed to (if you consider social networking, dating sites and random internet porn a resource) could also be considered illegal via computer misuse act and they can face criminal prosecution. It is our job to enforce the security of the network. Therefore, students accept the fact that they're being monitored and the reasons why they're being monitored. And when they've lost Internet for a few weeks, they think twice about using proxy portals (usually).

Upsetting for some, but makes sense in a way. According to EBay's TOS you must be over 18 to be registered and using the site, so students most certainly shouldn't be on EBay. Of course, that doesn't stop your teaching staff selling off your printer toners or anything...

Since we're talking security. A friend of mine used to work for the MOD. He would drive into work every day and get greeted by an armed guard at the gate. Normally he would have to wave his security pass under the guards nose to get in, but he eventually figured the guard got so used to letting him in he started to get a bit creative. He started to wave packets of fags, and even a packet of bacon under his nose and he didn't even blink. That's security for ya!
