Smoothwall monitor
discoveranother replied to discoveranother's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thank you everyone for your replies. Just wondered really, if you can install the monitor onto ipads manually (individually) or does it need an MDM solution ? There aren't loads of ipads. Thanks -
Hi all, Anyone on here use Smoothwall monitor ? Thanks all

VPN disconnects wireless
discoveranother replied to discoveranother's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Disconnects as in turns off the WiFi connection -
Hi all, I use a VPN client to connect into some of our customers. Oddly, when connecting to the VPN client, it disconnects wireless on my laptop. However, on another laptop, different manufacture and different wireless card, it doesn't. Anyone come across this before ? Thanks all

Thanks all for the replies. Very interesting. The reason I asked, have a few small schools in rural areas who cannot get good Internet coverage at all and ISPs telling them they need to buy a dedicated line which costs £4k a year. They simply cannot afford this. Other than that, speeds they have been provided with are up to 50mpbs !!! Wondered how Starlink worked and if it is an option.

Hi all, Would just like to ask a question regarding Internet options. Is anyone out there using Starlink for their business or school Internet ? Thanks all

Hi all, Not sure if this is the correct thread, but here goes. We have a dell server and the next business day warranty etc has expired, just wondered if anyone out there recommends cheaper warranties for renewal. Thanks all

Hi all, Not sure if have any Smoothwall experts out there, but have a school where the admin have been trying to access the following website :- https://www.home.sims.co.uk It appears as though this url address seems to redirect to sts.sims.co.uk. Either way, sts.sims.co.uk is the url to a login page. Apparently, when the user tries to login at sts.sims.co.uk it comes up with a "something went wrong. Error: Request failed with status code 400" I created a guardian category and also added it to the https inspection and web filter policies as well as adding it to web proxy exceptions but they still get the code 400 error. Just wondered if anyone else may have had this error before with Smoothwall. Thanks all

Slow internet accessing purplemash
discoveranother replied to discoveranother's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thanks. There is only one switch onsite, it is the following:- https://www.tp-link.com/uk/service-provider/managed-switch/tl-sg3428mp/ Running an internet speedtest from the school on premise server showed download speed of 19.34mbps and upload of 5.52mbps !!! Thanks -
Hi all, Just a question about wireless and internet speed. I know there are many factors involved, but just wanted some feedback. Have a school who access Purplemash on their laptops, only 10 laptops, Dell 3550s, which I've found to be decent laptops. It's a small school. They have 5 wireless access points as per below link in each of the 4 classrooms and hall. https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/products/23888-ubiquiti-uap-ac-pro-5-cloud/ I have no clue what internet speeds the school gets via BT as the school bought into this themselves. I had the following message from the head:- The laptops will log onto purple MASH if one is logging in or if they are on different access points. When multiple laptops are logging onto the site, they all stop on the white screen. it's as though there is too much traffic and they are bottlenecking on the Wi-Fi. Is this something that can be fixed or is it the broadband Speeds? I have to dig a little deeper to find out a bit more info as I don't know the schools internet speeds and if general internet access is ok etc. Thanks all

Hi all, Several of our clients use Smoothwall for their safeguarding. However, they receive weekly reports or notifications if you like, of any inappropriate content accessed. Unfortunately, the weekly notification only displays the user and category accessed, for example, 'Adult Sites', it doesn't display the time, date or actual site. Has anyone else encountered this ? If the reports cannot provide more info, there is no point continuing with Smoothwall, especially considering that the Dfe and schools are now becoming more stringent on safeguarding. You would have thought it is obvious from a safeguarding company that all necessary information is provided on the reports that are sent to the head teachers. Thanks all

Hi all, Have a school where the deputy head says she cannot create a new team. The option to create a new team is greyed out. However, teaching staff say they all can. This is odd, as new M365 users get all the same permissions. Anyone come across this before ? Do you have to give the deputy head 'Teams Administrator' permissions ? If so, this is strange as teaching staff say they can create new a team anyway and they have basic permissions. Any ideas most welcome. Thanks

Hi all, Thanks for the replies. I've setup Google Workspace for Education as it's free. The school already use M365 for their emails and Onedrive.

Hi all, Have a headteacher in a small school whose budget is very limited (aren't they all), they have an on-premise windows network, but he wants to buy some chromebooks, around 15 for pupils for basic use i.e. online use and office and that is about it (or so he says !!!). I'd just like some feedback please on anyone's thoughts and experience with chromebooks, as to the best best way to set these up for online use and office use, or if you feel that this isn't really a good idea. I want to give the head some feedback. Thanks all

Hi all, Silly question about Onedrive, but here goes. Have a user who has tons of files and folders stored on a laptop in her documents folder. If using Onedrive to sync these files and folders and save space on her laptop, I presume setting up onedrive as file on demand and save space, will push the files already in her documents folder to her onedrive instead, using the file on demand and save space option ? Thanks all

Hi all, I have a few laptops that arrived for a school. They are part of an academy trust. The laptops have Dellsafe Bios upon boot up. I've not seen this before. Anyone know how to boot from USB as seem to be unable to display the boot menu via F9 or even safe mode via F8. Thanks all
