How many technical Staff do you have ?
k-strider replied to Face-Man's topic in How do you do....it?
I have <1000 Kids at my school we have about: 120 fixed terminals, 80ish staff laptops 80ish Student (Y7) Laptops (to go up by this amount each year i guess) There is Me the NM.. and i have one PFY (term time only)... we are not over worked, though theres too much for 1 I hope to get another PFY in 2 years time when we get another 120 Student Laptops... I guess the amount of support you need really depends on the Network.. when I joined I was fire fighting all the time.. now everything runs relatively smoothly so we spend less time doing reactive tasks. -
sounds to me like you're on the south west grid for learning. they have just changed their filters for the staff you need to setup users in the safety net interface you need to tell them the address of your servers so updates continue to work. i don't have web address i'm at home on pda if i remember i'll take a look in the am. i have to do this too

i do it almost the same as Geoff though i put the password in the file and then explicitly denied read access to those groups i didn't want to see it.. but i might change it now... hadn't thought of that...

it sounds DNS'ish to me too... have you changed anything since it started breaking?? on the workstaions if you do ipconfig /all are the DNS servers listed your servers in AD that hodl the DNS?? Do you use DHCP ? if so is that correct so that it distributes the DNS servers as your AD DNS servers rather than say your Internet ISP DNS servers.. in DNS on the AD DNS servers does everthing look right.. look in the _mtds (yellow folder) or what ever it is.. (not at work cant check) do all the SRV records (or all records to be honest) point to your AD servers. Do you use folder redirection GPO settings? in taskmanager what is hoggin the CPU time if anythign when the freeze?? Please give us as much info as possible we are more likely to be able to point you in the right direction... also some one earlier suggested u rin dc and net diag.. let us know if it fails any off it...

I'm just thankfull that they gave there today for our tomorrow... we had a service today in school... i think i will goto the cathedral in Gloucester on Sunday for the service... i totally respect what our militray do for us.... when people try to slate or disrespect our remeberance of thoes Service Personnel who died for us to be free it winds me up.... i want to beat them..

LTO tape drives store a lot more Data on them than DDS tapes 300/400 GB Native depending on what one you get. I have a Tape problem too i backup waekly to a HDD in another Server and use external HDDs for off site backups.. but you can span data across DDS tapes but looking to get a LTO drive in the next finacial year for the main file server.

it looks like the Leftys (democrats) have got both houses over the pond!!! I'm watching Sky News Now.. lol..... Now naturally being a blue team supporter... the result is disappointing.. but long term will that mean in 2yrs we(the righties... GOP) should gain back control... and how does that effect us here this side of the pond!!!

Limbo on your point about traning for the real world... i have to agree.. when i was at school we used BBCs (early days)and ACORNS and well when i was at 6th Form Windows was well established ( 96-98 ) but our school still used Acorns and me and another Guy wanted to do computing but we said to the Teacher can we do it on PCs instead of Acorns cause as soon as we leave here we will be using PCs and Windows... they basically said no.. so i did Business Studies instead...

would i be right in thinking that to install a font you mearly need to copy the .fon or .ttf file into the fonts folder... usually somthing like windows\fonts in which case you could make a MSI using a free msi maker like http://www.advancedinstaller.com/

When i joined my school they were in the Schools Agreement.. i'm looking at a buy out cause i'm not sure how cost effective it is... but thats OT... the point is cause im a VL customer i get a login at Licenses.microsoft.com which allows me to d/l ISOs... my Software provider charges me 25-40 odd for media but i can get the ISO for free direct from MS

outlook web access as well.. over ssl I'm supprised so few people seem to use exchange !!! or is it an un-representative sample??

I would have thought if you were doing Video Editing, saving over the LAN would be SLOW since you are potentially writing GBs at a time..... and local storage would be a lot faster.. though that isn't going to help on the backup front... i've not done this yet so i'm not sure on the best advice On the Nas side when ever i have looked at buying a NAS box it has allways for me worked out cheaper to buy a new server and stuff it full of fast discs.. you can also put 2003Srv on it and then you have no problems with ntfs permissions... which always puts me of non NTFS storage solutions.

Yes use Group Poloicy to do this look in the computer section of GP (make sure this policy is applied to the pc object) and turn offline files off there... i cant tell you exactly where to look since im at home.. but it does work i have done it before.

if you are using the Slide show screensaver in XP you can put all your pics in a folder and then setup the screensaver when logged in... then use PowerToys for XP to copy the screensaver to the default that way it gets run when no one is logged in. we did this on all our XP Machines.. if your feeling posh you could probably make a MSI to copy all the files down to the PC and make the reg changes required! that’s on my todo list...

We have some Ergo Microlite 3s and 411s they are nice and small, and robust. i would defiantly recommend looking at those.. We also like the HP Business Notebooks, like the NX6310 (can get a Core2Duo with 1GB) for less than 700 or the NX6325 have AMDX2s in

anyone know when it will be on wsus? and anyone know if some policies will be able to turn off that advertising bit in the top bar?

its a real shame that dhcp doesn't replicate like dns or wins... the plan looks good to me.. the older dc that your demoting though if its stable it could stay as a dc and authenticate logins rather than the exchange box...

we use Poweroff its free just google poweroff.exe you could write a VB script to check the users group membership and if they arent staff force a logoff..loopback meger in GPO in the computer ou or better.. get the script to check the machien name. and apply the script to students users ou

What is more important? Cross-Curricular or Discreet ICT
k-strider replied to GrumbleDook's topic in Blue Skies
In our school we are moving to using ICT as just another Learning tool, and our ICT rooms and Laptops are getting used more and more across other subjects. I think we should make ICT available as much as possible to other subjects, obviously you need to support the IT lessons and they need a baseline amount of resource.. -
I wasn't going to post to this thread since its quite old now... but here is my two pence’s worth We have two suites from NS Optimum.. and I have to say that we haven’t had any problems with them that haven’t been resolved really, the components they use in the PCs are good like Intel MainBoards. And when we have any that break they are usually turned around within a week or so, we had an engineer on site once, he was good, it was to swap some poor Intel (oem) fans out that were noisy . the Girl I talk two on the Phone (clare) is nice.. and there price is good.. I would certainly consider buying another set of desktops from them. We haven’t ever bought servers or Laptops from them.. I really like the Ergo Laptops we have, and the HP Business notebooks .. There you go if I could earn 2p like that!!! I’d be a rich man.... well maybe not...

I was just wondering... since people who go to Uni and then end up teaching can get their student loans written off... but yet we some of us have been to Uni also... end up getting paid less than al but the youngest teachers and well I am paying the Students Loans company on my PaySlip... Isn’t this something we should be writing to our MPs about or at least doing something... it seems almost double standards...

Its not a proper solution, but have you tried pusing a login script regmerge to do the redirection? you can use %username% in a Reg merge..
