Yes VMs are great tools, but they have tended to be problematic where applications use an internet related resource (such as a remote database) for their function, an application can appear not to function on a VM and a great deal of time would be spent chasing a problem which wouldn't be present on a workstation.
Should have clarified that this was aimed at someone new to CC3 application integration, and by removing all the additional tripping points it would reduce problem solving.
The vagaries of RM packaging methods do really mean attending the courses, or having someone who has attended to hand, is a wise move.
