I wouldn't say they're being dishonest, rather they are not giving us the full picture.

I'm going to be solely "doing" the VLE two days a week (must get my job description changed). The school's ICTAC (ICT Across the Curriculum) members are responsible for their faculties and get their work together. This all comes to me, and I sit down and discuss with each teacher exactly what it is they want a particular piece of work to achieve, then I prepare it for publication, check with teacher again, then publish it. OK, that's the theory

When I was on the government's Ambition IT programme (you had to be unemployed) around 5/6 years ago, there were a couple of lads who had MCSE's, but were unemployed because they had little or no practical experience of working with computers or people. They had simply done the exams from the book. I would say, MCSE + Experience, very good Experience, good MCSE, no experience, start at the bottom and work your way up.

I think Boardworks produces a "lite" version for use on a VLE, not as a rich as the content you know, i.e. it will load faster etc.

What GD is doing is being a "Critical Friend". He's pointing out the arguments that private companies will use against us, showing us where our weak spots are so we can tighten up our case against managed services. I honestly don't believe he's setting us up for a fall. Much better to have this brought to our attention now than not have an answer when push comes to shove. If GD really wanted to screw us up then surely he'd sit back and say nothing while we took our partially formed argument to "the public". Nobody is right 100% of the time. We all get things wrong. So rather than bring an ill-prepared argument to the table because we get upset when someone, a friend, points out a flaw in our case, let's benefit from what GD is saying and sharpen our case. Be rational even though the stakes are so high, because losing your temper in an argument might make you feel good for a while, but if the result is you lose the case, what are you left with? Work with the grain.

Suppose you're on a field trip with some pupils, they're gathering evidence, and they see something which they could use to illustrate their work. I would recommend they use their mobile phones, if they have them, to take a photograph. Our Head of ICT is coming round to the view that mobile phones could be useful tools. The attached photo was taken last Easter near the Lake District on a Motorola Razr. I used the sepia tint Action in Photoshop to add some "age".

I'm developing a site for a friend and I'm struggling to sort out a problem with the way the page renders in Firefox as opposed to IE7. If you look at the site in IE7, the content falls within the pale yellow div. In FF it lies below it. I can't see where I've gone wrong, and I'm hoping that a fresh pair of eyes will spot the error.

mighty.grey.eagle's idea is probably the best if you want to mess about, but just as a side note, I did a full install of Moodle 1.9 this morning, with lots of interruptions, but at a rough guess it took me a lot less than an hour.

There's an interesting job going here. Which by the sound of it looks as if you'd be kept on after BSF, though I may be mistaken in this. If the salary is not pro rata, then it seems a good rate for term time work only.

After all the huffing and puffing at our school, the head has decided to finally go with Moodle. I haven't been officially told this, but have been asked to set aside two days a week to administer it, so I'll be obliterating our v.1.7 (there's not enough content worth saving) and starting afresh. No doubt when manged (I know, it's a typo, but it somehow looks more appropriate) services arrive we'll have to accept what is given.

My attention's been drawn to this Moodle module. It looks very interesting, I've downloaded it but I haven't had the time to set it up yet. Has anyone tested this themselves?

Yes, I read it with some amazement, especially the school which had reached BSF standards before BSF had even been implemented. To read the article you would think that IT technicians had never been involved in this. Looked everywhere for the word technician but couldn't see it anywhere. We're being removed from the history books...
