How are you working this? I believe Northants are going with LP+ which is Sharepoint, so how are you intending to integrate all the rest, if you don't mind me asking?

We don't use FirstClass at our school, but it is used by the University of East Anglia for their online course at Ultraversity. In the 18 months of the course there have been few problems, one of which was as a direct result of a sub station explosion/fire. You can set up conferences and either chat or talk in real time, have one to one private conversations with individuals. you can create groups who are hidden from each other, though you can see "who's online" even if they are in different groups and chat with individuals as noted above. There's an email facility of course.

I don't think we'll be going down the Linux route here Zak. I tried about 18 months/2 years ago but it didn't meet with too much enthusiasm.

I've just installed this on my laptop to test the Edugeek Joomla (1.5) package, but haven't had too much time to go too deeply into it. there are a lot of users it has to handle though.

Moodle 1.9.1 is generating some errors and it seems that the version of php I'm using needs updating. I've checked out the A2T forums but i can't find anything which makes sense to a non coder. Does anyone have a guide, or can point me to a guide which will hold my hand through this change? [edit] can anyone recommend a program that performs the same functions as Apache2Triad, but which updates automatically? It needs to be able to handle a lot of users (1200+) and to run on windows?

I introduced Webman's online room booking system just before last year to replace the paper-based one which was kept in our office and caused quite a few problems for us. I created a walkthrough in Wink and a shortcut all in a folder availalbe to staff. A few weeks ago I ran an (anonymous) online survey about the system and it's introduction where one person found it too difficult to understand. The results of the survey went out to all staff this afternoon via the online bulletin. I got this message back within the hour, "Whoever wrote those comments about the system being too difficult are just being.........!!!! Clearly, they have a bee in their bonnet. The system in great, so were the instructions, it's other people who obviously hadn't bother to read/watch the vid. Have a nice weekend!" I feel that Webman deserves a lot of credit for devising such an easy to use system, and one of the reasons I chose it is because it was so straightforward. For anyone who hasn't used it, I suggest you try. It's a great way to introduce staff to the idea of working from a central, online information store.

Some managed service providers won't let you replace an unplugged data cable if you're still employed by the school, and not Tuped over to the managed service company. Of course it would be easier to have the teacher look the other way while you replace the cable, however, the service provider's helpdesk won't know this is going on and so will have unreliable data about the number of problems they actually deal with. My suggestion is that all problems are logged with the helpdesk so they have a true picture of what they have to deal with.

There used to be a time when a teacher who had reached the top of the (teaching) tree was expected to apply for a management role, and this may still exist to a lesser extent. This usually meant that your best teachers were lost from the classroom. Running a school and managing the budget, as well as seeing that the curriculum is delivered is very time consuming, and I feel that splitting the roles is a good idea.

Uninstalling XPSP3 has done the trick, but I don't think this is the best way to go about it.

In one of our IT suites pupils are getting this message when trying to open Fireworks (8) - Could not launch Fireworks. File is locked. Dreamweaver, Flash etc are no problem. Tried Googling it but all likely sites are blocked by the LEA filter. Anyone encountered this problem? It works in other suites. It has been working until recently, so I suspect it may be an update of some sort.

Just been told this morning that the external assessor will have access to FF, so the site will be viewable. Thanks for your input.
