I worked at a place which had the cable slung from roof to roof, which was fine until you had a couple of hot days an the cable stretched and sagged some. Wagon deliveries had to be handled very carefully so they didn't bring down the cable.

Head of ICT came to me late on Friday with a site a pupil had created in Fireworks and exported to Dreamweaver. The site is part of her coursework and will have to be burnt to cd and sent to be assessed. She's created some rollovers which should link to another page, but only does so in FF. It fails completely in IE7. The whole site has been copied to my pen drive and I've spent a good part of the weekend trying to figure out why it won't work. There are some ethical issues here, such as not being able alter her work myself, and unfortunately, being a local site I can't point anyone to it either. Whilst I have FF on my machine, pupils and staff don't, so it's a good bet that the examiner won't have it either. I've opened the site in Dreamweaver and the rollovers have the required url's, etc. I've tried making links to pages I've created, but nothing seems to work. All other links on the site work correctly, just these rollovers don't. If anybody has any ideas I'd be grateful.

AFAIK Foundation status makes no difference. You'll still have to put up with a managed service, and Tupe-ing.

When you say "self-governed", what do you mean? Are you a "public" school, Foundation school or Academy?

I got one of these for my daughter. Though the item here is "used" and the one I got her was new. She studies abroad and so it gets humped around quite a bit when she flies out and back again. She hasn't had a problem with it in just about a year. Went for the XP Pro version at the time (rather than Vista) which meant I got an extra Gb of memory for the same price.

It hasn't been wasted as your current pupils have had the use of them. I also think, though someone can correct me on this, that the value of your old equipment is taken into account when calculating what you'll get in the new school/refurbishment (delete as appropriate).

Thought this may be of interest to some of you out there. I bought a Transcend 4GB SD card recently for my Nikon D50 to see if I could get it to work. There's some small print on the Nikon website, which I can't find at the moment, which says that you can go up to 4Gb with certain models if you format the cards as Fat32. The reading on the LED screen for normal sized images read 2.1k, but with the k above the one. It took me a moment to realize what this meant. In RAW format I can get somewhere in the region of 535 images, which is what I could get on my old 1Gb card, but using the normal image size setting.

Aside from the legal position, this pupil (I assume he's been banned from playing games because he ignored instructions to stop) will have access to all that teacher's work and possibly sensitive material, with all the consequences that follow, such as being able to delete files and folders. I'm not sure how the Data Protection Act (DPA) will work here, but my assumption is that the teacher will be responsible to some extent for giving him access to his area. I know similar incidents happen here, despite staff being told not to do it. Of 109 AUP's being handed out last September to all staff with laptops, 35 haven't been signed and returned yet.
