  1. KermEd, thanks for the input. There have been quite a few threads on Edugeek in the past about SMARTboard installs, and some of the problems we have had. As a representative of SMART technologies, maybe you would be interested in setting up a link from the Direct Support tab above. If you scroll down the Direct Support page, there is a Contact Us link that will email the Edugeek admin. I appreciate you already have online chat available on your support website, but a lot of us use this forum as our first port of call, and it would save going separately to another site for support. And I will upgrade. I upgrade as little as possible with SMARTboard laptops as they are difficult to get access to, the install takes a long time, and there are numerous postings on here about the problems others have had with installs. And I'm only part time. Just so you know. Glad sending the link to this thread helped you work through the issue.
  2. :D:D Says a lot for SMART installs, doesn't it?? Anyway, SMART tech support got back to me to tell me to install the latest version (maybe they were reading this thread!). Interestingly, despite the fact that I told them that I was running version 10.0.123.0, the instructions they sent me involve uninstalling the old version: "To upgrade your software: 1. Uninstall any previous versions by clicking on: Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs Browse through the list and remove any previous version including: - Notebook Software 10 - SMART Board Software - SMART Board Drivers - Senteo - SMART Response Note: You may be prompted to reboot your system after uninstalling the software. 2. Follow the link below to download and install the latest version of Notebook 10 and the SMART Board Drivers from our website. http://smarttech.com/us/Support/Browse+Support/Download+Software" As I only have 8 staff laptops to deal with (although access to them is a pain and involves my lunch hour being used up!), I may go down the standalone install route and manually turn off auto updates.
  3. I have just downloaded the latest SMART notebook software and drivers, and got an email from SMART about changes to their licence agreement. They are clarifying the licence. There was a link to a pdf about the licence, which I have attached. I think this is valid here as well as in the USA.notebook-license-letter-americas.pdf
  4. The affected laptop here was running install version 10.0.124.0 and software version 10.0.123.0. From the numbers I would guess that was later than 10.0.94.0 - but then who am I to think that bigger numbers are newer..?? Anyway, thanks for the link and I will mentally prepare myself for the fun of installing new SMART software. EDIT: Ah, my mistake. Should have looked at the link first. Your version is newer, and is 10.6.94.0 .
  5. Yep, just this week. I have had a reply back from SMART to say they are currently tracking the issue. They have sent me a workaround, which is actually what I put up above, except you allow mixed content for the whole of the internet (not just the trusted sites zone)!! I'd already done this on one laptop as a workaround anyway, so i know it works, but it is very risky allowing mixed content for the internet zone as opposed to the trusted sites. I've sent them the link to this thread.

  7. We are using IE 8 with Notebook Software (SMART) version 10. I suspect SMART update is going out to the Internet. Possibly I can fix this with the GPO that I used to sort out the same problem with our Learning Platform. Need to find the URL for the SMART update site though. Not heard back from SMART Technical Support yet, except from the auto-responder. But as I emailed the USA site, there will be a time lag for the reply. Once we know the URL of the site that is generating the error, the following should sort out the problem: Open IE Settings Security Tab Click on Trusted Sites Click on the Sites button Untick the requires https box Add the offending URL Click Close Still on Trusted Sites, click on the Custom Level button Scroll down to Miscellaneous Locate Display Mixed Content and Enable it Click OK, OK If it solves the problem, you can do all this through a GPO across the network, but I'm not at work at the moment.
  8. This has just started appearing here too. On Notebook 10. What IE version are you using? I wonder if it is more to do with IE8 than the Notebook software. Really annoying. I can fix the message for safe websites, but the only way I can think of fixing this for Notebook is to allow mixed content for the whole of the Internet, which is very bad for security. I have emailed SMARTtech technical support.
  9. Has anyone got a proper fix for this issue yet? I am having the same issue since deploying IE8 and setting GP to remove the search bar for ordinary users. I have installed IE8 on the server - that would update the adm templates, wouldn't it? I too did the same Google search for the issue, and found the reg key hack, but even if it consistently worked for standalone users (which it doesn't), it is useless for a network with mandatory profiles running. Microsoft seem to be ignoring this issue for its standalone users, so is there anyone on here who has influence witn MS and can get this sorted? It is REALLY annoying!
  10. Same advice here. Our whole LA lost updates from mid April, due to an oversight by our ISP. I have additional support from a local secondary school, and they contacted Sophos support and got things going again very quickly.
  11. Small junior school, and I'm only part time, so two main methods: A) send pupil to get me if it's urgent and they know I'm in, or B) write it in the fault book strategically placed with pen attached to face them as they leave staff room, stored next to my FITS forms. They don't seem to value progress reports of jobs, which you get from a helpdesk. Just want to know when its fixed.
  12. You can phone the usual support line and they will tell you what has been done to it - if you can bear to go through the ten menu and wait forever routine. The problem for your brother will be how long the repair will last. They may have put in an identical part which is by definition as old as the one that failed. That is partly why I was so keen to get my machine fixed. It had gone off to Mercom twice due to graphics card failure followed by no sound with new graphics card. Each time they replaced the new and better graphics card with the same type that had failed which presumably had been recycled from an old machine or was left over. Anyway, the first time the repair lasted 3 months and the second time the repair lasted 4 weeks. At least now this time, having fixed the sound issue before the courier arrived, I have the new and better graphics card.
  13. Thank you to everyone who has been trying to help and told me that i should still be getting onboard sound with the new graphics card. It took about 30 seconds to sort in the end: go into BIOS advanced menu, down to Onboard Audio which was set to Auto, set Onboard Audio to Enable instead, Save and Exit, boot up, the drivers for the onboard card were installed and set to default automatically and I now have sound with the new graphics card!!! Have just rang the Tech Guys to cancel the courier and tell them I have fixed it and how. The man who answered the phone expressed surprise that not one of the engineers who had come out since November neither the folks at Mercom where it had been to twice for repair nor the people who answered the initial phone calls (including second level support) had tried this solution. I tried ringing the number for complaints which is on the Tech Guys website, and they told me that it wasn't a number for complaints and put me through to customer service for PC Performance which is the service agreement company. They can't take complaints about the Tech Guys. But I have an address in Sheffield to write to and will be copying the letter to BBC Watchdog and to our local radio station's consumer program too. I am over the moon that the fault has been fixed but incandescent with rage at the level of service I have received from the Tech Guys/PC World as a paying customer. The agreement will be cancelled shortly. Once again Edugeek membership has proved to be fantastic!
  14. Need to check when I get home but think I am getting the green bar on the default device, just no output to speakers - as if i'm not plugged in to correct jack - but I've run out of places to plug anything in! But don't take this as read - as I said will check when home.
  15. OK. I can right click the speaker option and choose Playback Devices (so I was wrong earlier). That shows four icons all called Digital Output Device (HDMI) and numbered one to four, with two set as default. No others listed. So right clicked and ticked Show Disabled Devices (Show Disconnected Devices is already ticked). Hasn't changed anything! I think the Tech guy was trying to do all this. Please don't suggest i go into device manager or Playback devices and uninstall these devices, as i've been through all this in the past and as soon as you restart they are installed again. I've also tried the different jacks on the rear of the machine for sound. Last time, when I got landed with the new graphics card I had to go on the NVidia website and get it to detect the card and download and install the drivers. These included sound drivers and I thought that was what had caused this problem with sound. But the NVidia drivers haven't been downloaded and installed at all this time. It seems to be Vista doing this to the sound.
  16. Sorry for the delay! The graphics card is NVidia Geforce, but not sure of the model as the Tech Guy helpfully took the box away and didn't install the drivers. The speaker sound comes through Realtek, and I suspect the jack detection i not working. However, i know the tech guy tried right clicking the speaker icon in sys tray and playback devices wasn't available. Will have a go with @Jamo's solution now. Don't want to go down the USB sound card route, as Vista throws a wobbly with too many USB devices connected as it is and suspect this type of card would be too slow for game playing sound. Thanks for everyone's contribution. Helps to know it may be poss to solve this myself (with a little bit of help from edugeek!).
  17. Hi Folks! Maybe you can help me get out of a Tech Guys/PC World loop (yes, I know it was def a mistake to even go down that route but we have paid out and an official complaint is about to be drafted)! Is there an adaptor you can buy that will allow a computer expecting HD Audio to play through normal speakers? We have basic speakers, front mounted headphones and no speakers on monitor. Op sys is Vista Home Premium. Computer is only just three years old. Basically, the graphics card in our home computer has failed for the third time and I am getting desperate. Each time, they have sent someone out with a better graphics card as the original isn't made any more. This has a VGA port plus an HDMI port. Once fitted there is no sound, as the graphics card can carry audio and automatically installs High Def Audio which means that normal audio ports are ignored. We've been through all the Device Manager uninstall stuff and driver issues, and there doesn't seem a way to force the normal audio ports to be used. So they cart the computer away and it comes back with an old style graphics card installed and the sound working again. But the first graphics card replacement failed after three months and the second has only lasted four weeks. So you can imagine I would dearly love to know if there is a simpler solution to this that might cost me a little bit. The support agreement won't fit a new sound card while there are old graphics cards lying around. Seems when you pay for unlimited repairs then that is what you get - even if they only last for a few weeks! At the moment, I have a computer with the new HDMI card in, which boots and looks OK, but no sound. Courier booked for end of week to cart it away. If there is an adaptor i can buy that will help break this cycle, please let me know!

    IE8 Policy

Still can't add an attachment but I gather the Edugeek staff are working on the issue so I'll just have to be patient. I googled the corrupted default search provider issue and it does seem to be a known fault, but one that Microsoft seem to be ignoring. Lots of stuff on the Microsoft forums from months ago, with suggestions for fixes from various folk, mostly registry edits, and most of them seeming to work for some and not for others.
  20. OK. I've fixed it myself though it was a bit scary and seemed drastic. I made a note of the main settings tab entries in the user account properties (profile, home folder, etc.) then used Ad Infinitum to delete the user account (making sure that the Delete Home Folder box was unticked but that the profile was ticked as being deleted). Checked that my home folder was still in our user data share - it was - phew! Then used Ad Infinitum to very carefully recreate the user account. It's worked - I can now access the Internet, access all of the mapped drives and get to my redirected Favourites! The only thing I have lost is some of my desktop settings (those in my profile and not controlled by GP) and some of my IE preferences (again those were in the deleted profile) but neither of these are a big headache compared to having the corrupted user account.
  21. I am thick as I didn't spot that I was posting on a CLOSED thread!! Thanks for replying anyway, and for reassuring me that I am not toally losing it over the inability to attach a file.
  22. We had an interesting self inflicted error at the end of last term, which I think has resulted in corrupting my user account login. Basically, someone (not me) was fixing a time server issue to get our clock running properly, and inadvertantly changed the date at the same time to two months earlier. Once we'd discovered this, I reset the date and rebooted the server. I wasn't aware that I was logged in anywhere, so not sure what happened to my user account. However, now when I log in I am getting a scripting error and group policy isn't being applied. Interestingly one of the drive maps from the login scripts works, but other drives aren't mapped and there are no printers available. Group policy for folder redirection, favourites redirection, and other things isn't being applied. If I try to run the Group Policy results wizard, it tells me that the user doesn't exist. However, I can find the account in Active Directory, right click on it and get the Properties up, and it appears to be in the right place in AD. I am the only user running roaming profiles - all the other users have mandatory profiles, and all other user accounts (including the admin account) appear to be OK. I've removed any cached profiles from the machines that I've tried logging in to. As the proxy settings are in GP, I can't access the Internet. I did try manually editing in the proxy settings but they won't stay. As soon as I click OK they disappear. Any ideas as to how I can fix this? I don't want to delete the account as that will lose my documents as well, won't it??
  23. I must be thick or something, but I cannot seem to attach a file to a post!! I get to the manager, click on the Add Files button, click on Select Files, find my file and it is listed in the Add Files window but then what do I do????? If I close the Add Files window the file disappears. Help please!

    IE8 Policy

I would attach a spreadsheet I downloaded from Microsoft that lists all the GP settings for IE8 and below. Bit of a slog to trawl through but you can filter it with Excel data filters. However, I'm struggling to get the attachments part of this wizzy new website to work!! So here is the web address for the download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab4655f2-0a3c-42eb-974d-24b2790bf592&displaylang=en It is in Excel 2007 format. I'd saved it in the .xls format to attach. I have been getting the same error message about a corrupted default search provider. Thought it was something I'd done, but now suspect not. Maybe need to Google the error.... Off to post for help on attachments and hopefully I'll be back!
