I have a basic O2 broadband which is actually Be - it's not the fast package being talked about here, but seems to be pretty good. £7.50 a month for unlimited downloads at up to 8Meg (get just a shade under 5, about 2 miles from exchange) and is reliable now I've ditched the O2 Broadband Box (same as a BeBox) and sorted my house phone wiring. Another nod here for the Netgear DG834 too - got given it by a friend and it's great!

Well, not exactly an exciting New Year here... Working today until 2-3pm, then got to go home and start cabling my newly redecorated home office - got 10 network outlets to install. Then get everything back in to the office having finished decorating. After that, the evening may well involve a few drinks at home! Then tomorrow I start on decorating the bedroom. If only I'd had leave left to take over this Christmas - would've been so much easier!

I remember a similar sort of thing... Sadly, I don't know what it was either. Only thing I can remember was that it was some sort of Novell network - maybe it was a NetWare feature?

Isn't copying large files from a memory stick always quicker than to a memory stick anyway? Nothing to do with the OS, just the processes going on in the memory stick.

Thanks for the suggestions. The old diagrams are quite out - some of the switches have been changed, and some port locations are given as the names of people, who've either moved rooms or left entirely! The switches are a mix, some 3Com but other makes too. I don't think they are all managed either! I've got until the end of the hols, but alongside other things to be done too. I doubt I'd be allowed to use any of the software tools - our roles are quite segregated and I'm not a domain admin.

Hi all, Looking for some help here! I'm still relatively new here, but have managed to get the job of re-doing the network diagrams. Now, the diagrams we have are quite out of date, so a lot of it is wrong. I've been tasked with updating it all, but am completely at a loss as to how to go about it. I've only been here four months or so and haven't been allowed to have that much to do with infrastructure, so I have no idea myself of what goes where. But I'm here on my own over the Christmas holidays, so I've been lumbered with doing it. Any hot tips on how to figure out how it's all done? Cheers!

Call me old fashioned, but isn't it the teachers' job to maintain discipline and stop pupils from doing things they're not supposed to do in lessons? Otherwise, we'll be in danger of people asking us to work out how to disable their fists to stop them fighting, or their mouths so they can't eat in class!

I've tried to do that with stage lights before and it is MUCH harder than you would imagine. A 'Batman' type mask does absolutely nothing because there is no way to focus. You will always need lenses involved for that kind of thing, certainly to use a slide-type arrangement.

Watch out with named folders in a shared group login. I guarantee that in a primary school, at some point someone will drag their folder into someone elses and 'lose' it. Been there, done that.

If you use a VL key, you would need to use a VL disc - no OEM disk or installation will work with a VL key

We've got a 32" Toshiba Regza LCD and that seems pretty good and was reasonably priced. No complaints at the TV quality from the built in Freeview, Wii looks good on Component and XBox 360 is stunning on HDMI.

Hi guys Can anyone suggest a decent video capture card for doing VHS to DVD conversions? I've just been suffering with a Compro VideoMate E800 for a couple of weeks, but it was completely useless and is being sent back. So I'm looking for recommendations - I'm not too bothered if it's PCI-E, PCI or USB to be honest, just needs to capture at a decent res. Thanks, Chris.

When it comes to the driving test, surely. Most days I see examples of driving which can't be even close the highest standards in the world. In fact, I think if you gave a toddler a car they could do at least as well...

At times, our internet connection can't deal with the school's internet traffic without slowing to a crawl, so it certainly wouldn't handle it if all the IT traffic for the school was suddenly piped down it. I think the whole notion is a gimmick to be honest.

Hi, Does anyone have any bright ideas how to get video files out of iMovie into a format which is compatible with Moodle? The version we have can only output to QuickTime .mov files, and our Moodle doesn't seem to recognise them?? The only thing I can think of at the moment is to export the MOVs from iMovie, and then use Premiere Elements on a PC to convert them to a different format. Any suggestions for a better way, or even good movie formats to use on Moodle. Cheers, Chris
