@vikpaw: no middle-east operations yet (it'd be nice, eh?) sorry and yes, Gav is terribly easy to scam...
-
You can always complain. Wether it will do any good is entirely another matter. IME of these things, the answer is almost universally "no". Really LEAs etc. should be putting offsite backup servers in their central location - as they generally have a fairly contended internet uplink.
-
Can you send attachments by PM on here? That might be quicker than email at this rate
-
Not gottit yet :-/ To [email protected] (or tom.newton@) ?

@nephilim: Yes, it is North Carolina - we have a growing "branch office" there with a handful of support agents. Same as the job in southampton really - reg'lar internal support agent. I think they would *rather* have an american - but send me your CV and I will put it in front of all relevant parties.

Smoothwall Database Errors

@ZeroHour: can you give Datalas (aka Darren) here "SmoothWall" rank -he's from SmoothWall, and he's rank, so he definitely deserves it -
Which speaker cable to Extend Home Hifi Speakers
tom_newton replied to networkingNut's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
I can only tell the difference between cable that has been colour coded, and cable that hasn't, as the latter is much more likely to produce out of phase stereo, as you increas your chances of wiring up wrong. Go for something inexpensive but colour/band coded. Try richer sounds? -

Good idea! Thanks. -
Using perfect backup, but would like something with an on-site component, and cheaper per-gig.

..and yet more - now with link to full job ad for support agent.

rob - there's sometimes issues with sites which take a long time to do something, and the proxy times out before the browser has given up.. but that is unusual. If possible, PM me a link, and any credentials I need to get in and we will test it.

Excellent. Give a man a a fish and all that cobblers. Probably should be a button on t'gui for that, but everyone says the GUI has too many buttons -
Grah, semicolon vs. colon oddity, it is odd that it alters it like that. Distribution list would be fun, perhaps once the support forum goes live?

@ZeroHour: nice one.. now.. how about @smoothwall? ooh, it's case sensitive folks, watch yer caps - gah, mine no workee

Cheeky bump for this thread as I have added some more info. There's also a support opportunity in Charlotte, NC. Thank you all so far for your interest. Also: please fwd this thread to anyone you think might be suitable!

Smoothwall user cannot login, limit reached
tom_newton replied to ianniow's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
That patch has been thoroughly tested and i'm pretty confident it will sort that issue - was a race condition between timeouts and logins with NTLM, which has now been eliminated. -

Smoothwall Database Errors
tom_newton replied to MartinT's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Martin, the FS check is much more low level. A database check would take even longer. We plan to give much more user control over the FS check at some point - they really are not needed so frequently. -
Smoothwall Non-Operational since Auth update
tom_newton replied to Netwacky87's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Mart, glad its fixed - but here I am logged in at 0745! That's fair normal for me mind I wonder if the search roots were incorrectly populated. Would be interested to know if you can remember what advanced settings you fiddled with. Apologies for the hassle that caused you - we are fairly confident in our settings import routines, but it seems they may have failed here. If you run into any further problems, please do not hesitate to ring the support guys. -

Dave - there is an issue which ian is having with the concurrent logon settings, which you won't have had with the beta (no cl setting) but should be fixed with a patch to the release patch. Make sure you have the very latest... or try turning off concurent limiting! -
Aw thanks guys (boo: no blushing smiley!). We love you too!

Mart - if you are really stuck, try our US support number - should still be open for a bit yet, and in situations like this im sure they'll pitch in Sorry to hear the update has caused you problems - there've been in excess of 230 users installed so far, and i've only heard a handful of teething troubles, so hopefully we'll get you back on your feet fairly sharpish. I'll be in from 0800 tomorrow - call me if it is still giving gyp. -
Hi Folks, Yet again, we SmoothFolk are recruiting! Two vacancies that might interest Edugeekers to talk about. I'll update this post with any extra details as and when. Even if you don't think you match up exactly to the job description -get in touch. We may have some room for manoeuvre. First up: Technical Pre-Sales, Leeds This role involves supporting the sales team when they present solutions to potential customers of all shapes and sizes, and involves quite a bit of travel, although you do get a desk to drive as well. Next to me, probably, you potentially lucky devils, you. Update: People have asked about the hours. Officially, 0900-0530 + hour for lunch. Most days the office opens @ 0730, and there's usually some stragglers in at 19:00, so some flexibility will be expected - but it does work in both directions. Holiday I *think* is 21 + BH. Customer facing, so must be presentable! Need decent networking knowledge, and *either* windows or Linux. Both obviously would be attractive, but we can teach either. Which one you are strong in will depend who helps train you This will be long on the "learning on the job" stuff. Active edugeek poster preferred and you'll likely get to go to BETT and the conferences... so if you've never been... Pre-Sales engineer, Full Ad Next: Technical Support, Southampton A more technically involved role, you will definitely need to know your networking, and have held some form of helpdesk/supporting role. More office based, this one, but in the airconditioned coolness of SmoothWall Towers (soton). You'd be answering inbound support calls by phone/email and working in our ever growing international team of support agents. Weekend shiftwork is inevitable, with pay to match though. Possibly some evening work when we are short in the US. Full ad - Support engineer In terms of salary - I really don't know for the support job (no ad yet, and it's not me recruiting that one), and for Pre-sales - well, I have a hard upper bound - but no real fixed ideas. The role is relatively junior - but with good scope for progression. Second/third job perhaps. PM me with your expectations and i'll tell you if we have a match! Apply by email or enquire by PM, or phone.. all details in 'sig. PS. No agencies

We imagine that many ISPs will take an appalling shoeing off the world cup. This will be a real test of backbone for many. I would seriously suggest investing in/borrowing a freeview card. Whichever way the cat jumps, you are likely to need a TV licence (commercial organisations certainly do...)
