  1. They are now doing the it for the remaining Birmingham school and are called lend lease ICT. The school I work for moved on the 1st of this month. Llict are now working towards the next phase of schools
  2. No replies GeneralDreedle or just not happy with the replies you got? I haven't replied to you as i'm not really allowed but our schools got out of a bad deal for a better one. I don't think there truely is a way out of bsf for ICT, one company will just replace another.
  3. OMG! pupils have their own personal space and can access from home. Teacher can teach instead of having to open the back of the computers themselves!!! Where do i sign! BSF Is amazing!
  4. Seems like most things are being scrapped in this so i ask the question whats the point of an expensive IT company who don't really know what they're doing (or it seems that way to me ) Seems a big waste of money and time to pay someone double what i can do myself without them. I really hope that the schools and specifically my school can get out of this whole thing before christmas!
  5. Totally agree with you. The school's strive to be outstanding but surely making a standard managed solution from a school takes away the flexability and ingenuity needed to create an outstanding school. I just don't think Managed services understand how flexable a school needs to be.
  6. A lot of the IT companies have been lying to us saying if its not in warranty we can't have it in the new school. This is a load of rubbish. You can take whatever you want to the new school the new equipment just doesn't go on the same managed system ie. the it company doesn't have to fix it with in 10 mins etc. Don't listen to the IT company they will tell you what they want to happen not what you can do if they like it or not.
  7. lol well i didn't think they we're just rubbish at our school but we will wait and see but from e-mails i have had and meetings i have notes from the data centre at least is under very serious discussions and i will not be surprised at all if it is cancelled. Hopefully we can just keep the IT in house which is how it should be anyway
  8. Well i don't see how they are going to run a data centre designed to run 69 school when only 9 schools will go ahead. Considering the managed service aren't doing so well i just don't see how they can keep going now. This is just a guess from my school but it doesn't look good for their 'plan' (which is over budget, poor and over the contracted deadlines )
  9. lill - i think they have they have had to include the second wave of schools in brum because even tho they haven't financially closed i think they are very close to it and can't stop it not, or so i have heard. Our school is nearly finished and looks great now that the school battled and won to stop them making it yellow No idea what Redstone are going to do now hopefully that won't go ahead either
  10. lol thanks for that timzim the part where you said "we'll be in the firing line next" really filled me with hope fingers crossed the IT company go bust as they seem to be dependant on the bsf scheme of all the bham schools and a data centre for 69 just isn't gunna financially last running 9 school. i'll start preparing my servers to move with us
  11. timzim did you read my post i know that most the schools in brum have been stopped i'm trying to find out the news on what then happens to the 9 out of 69 in the region that are going ahead. Do they go ahead with the outsourcing etc.
  12. Any one from a birmingham school? whats going to happen here? only about 9 schools are going through now and 60 are not. what does this actually mean for the staff of the 9 schools and what happens from here? I was almost okay with the idea of going to Redstone even tho they are well... hmm... unproductive. There were 69 schools that Redstone would outsource running from their data centre (that cost millions) so the move didn't seem so bad but what happens now there are only 9? Do i want to work this company when my options are just low? Silver lining however is that there are now Birmingham school i can work at as they will not be under Redstone and be inhouse (i assume) Someone please relieve my worries
  13. Hi all We recently had a large power cut in the school and since then we are having a few connection problems which i've been unable to track down. So i'm asking for a bit of help from anyone who can give it. The power cut took out 3 switches which we have replaced. And before i go on we are a BSF school moving to a new build in March 2011 so spending is only a yes if its really really important. The problems do come up more often in the same area on the same machines but most the errors are still random. The machines are just losing connection the the network plain and simple and a reboot of the machine fixes the problem. The DC's are not showing errors so its not an active directory error and the dns and dhcp is working perfectly. I am sure its one or two switches that are just playing up. The problem i have is trying to find the root of the problem. The problems are not major problems just annoyances. Any help on this would be great. Thanks Jason
  14. Hi Daniel We've been buying HP for a very long time now and they are excellent servers! we have never had a break down and in most cases the servers comes with a 3 year warranty depending on the model you buy. We use a company called Millgate as they are HP gold partners and have always been cheaper than anyone elses quotes including HP (don't know they do this ). We recently brought a HP G6 DL160 which was around £800 and works perfectly but you can get cheaper still i believe. Jason
  15. Hi all Having a problem adding more than one of these printers. Our printer server is called PS-01. I add the printers through add printer and i don't install any of the software from hp. I can install 1 perfectly which works however when i install another i get a problem saying there are no drivers for the printer and printing stops. This is quite a weird thing. We add the printers to computers using a large script and give the machines varible details. This methods works for all the other printers in the school including the newer model HP 2055N and 2025N. Has anyone had the same prolem and how did you get round it. Thanks
  16. Aren't academies and BSF different things? I believe the tories are in support for academies but not in support of BSF. I've read on many occassions they have labelled BSF as a waste of money.
  17. Hi all Read some reports that a tory government wouldn't be backing the bsf scheme if elected as its a waste of money . Does anyone have any thoughts on this subject? As someone who would be moving to a new school next year and be outsourced by an IT company i'd like to find out if a change it party would effectively make my future better or worse. Thanks Jason
  18. i spoke to soon forensic are updating now for me very quick
  19. can't get this to update to 3.0.0.9 think my updateurl on the server is wrong. can anyone help? can't wait for forensic the kids are all using pdfs ict lessons!! current updateurl says http://pcelic.forensicsoftware.co.uk/patches/pcent/bham/ which doesn't go anywhere Jason
  20. It was quite a while ago in April. I think i ran adprep /forestprep then adprep /domainprep Then a promoted my 2008 server to dc and made this pdc. I used a mircosoft guide from the internet that helped through all the steps and explained what each adprep command did. the adprep stuff is on the 2008 cd/dvd under \sources\adprep\. If i was you i'd get google a micrsoft guide and follow this through as i found the one i had was invaluable.
  21. A quick google search will tell you how to back up ad. quite simple and easy but if your run tapes every night then the tapes should have backed ad up. In simple terms 2008 uses a newer schema (44 i think ?) to add a 2008 dc to an existing 2003 ad you need to make both servers use the same schema or the dc's won't work correctly. I updated the schema on my 2003 dc's and then made my 2008 dc the pdc (primary dc) which all works great but means i don't know how well it works when a 2003 dc is the pdc. on my orginal post i posted 1.install server 2008 2.run the following commands on my 2 2003 dc's adprep /forestprep adprep /domainprep adprep /domainprep /gprep adprep /rodcprep 3.run through dcpromo on my 2008 dc 4.get a cup or coffee and enjoy my success but i didn't have to run all the parts in part 2. if you google these steps you should be able to pick out which ones to use but i think it was just the first 2. Jason
  22. Got the trial update from pce today and it fixed every single problem we've been having with pdf's crashing ie8 and ie8 itself just crashing. They need to roll this patch out asap as its just affecting most lessons and at a time when teachers are entering eportal grades they need to stop messing about and send the patch out! oh i got this in the e-mail "A patch (auto update) will be released to LINK ICT to test by the end of next week." Wonder how many times they'll tell other school this over the next couple months Jason
  23. All of a sudden i have the exact same problem after months of running flash mx without a problem. If i log in as a teacher or a student i can't get flash to work. The only way to get it to go is to "run as" the program with an admin account. I've tried lots of thing to no avail so far but i'll post if i find anything. The link on here didn't work either Jason
  24. were doing exactly the same, god bless the iphone. I just think its very important for it to be reliable otherwise it just won't get used
  25. Hi all We have just got our schools vle up and running externally for all to use however for some reason its not very reliable sometimes being very slow or not lwetting you on at all. I've rang and moaned at bgfl who fobbed me off basically. Are we the only ones with a problem here. What experience has everyone else has with the external routing from bgfl? Thanks Jason
