well we don't own our own children, the State owns them just the same as the State owns us. with regards to IT when I first started here I would wonder sometimes when you fix a problem, the staff are actually upset rather than happy that you have fixed it. Then you realise you just got rid of their excuse :-(

Yeah it was second hand, condition wise though it is fine, battery charges nicely etc. (it still takes 4-5 hours to charge though!) if I lived in a city I would probably consider commuting on it. let's hope they can make some decent battery technology breakthroughs. one that does 30mph and lasts a good amount of time would be great (they'd have to change the legislation also, they go on about wanting to save the planet yet something that would be useful for a lot of people namely a fast ebike, they regulate so you need a car license!)

It's pretty sad that these people will just openly lie to peoples faces rather than admit a proofread check didn't happen. And these people are pretty much in charge of us all too.

My dad picked up an e-bike for £500, it is pretty decent to ride - I could ride it all day if the charge held out without getting tired. i think it would do about 20 miles and that is with very inefficient riding on the maximum power setting. it's called a carrera vengeance and i think it is pretty low end, not that familiar with ebikes. it does about 15 miles an hour which is a lot faster than non-assisted riding. turning the battery off on the thing makes it an absolute dog to ride, so make sure you don't run out of power maintenance wise it is just like a normal bike, the battery slots in and out using a tab pretty much like a laptop battery does, so if the battery failed, you would just buy another one. all i've needed to do on it is replace two spokes (the spokes on the motor wheel keep failing, not sure why, they are very small spokes). it has mechanical disc breaks and is a hardtail. the front suspension is okish not great, but then it is a cheapo bike it's not exactly a full sus downhiller.

What kind of freaked me out not so long ago; I was in Tescos doing a bit of shopping and I pulled out a distinctive looking coat from the rack and gave it a good look over. I decided not to buy it in the end and put it back. Well for a few weeks later online, I was getting adverts for either that exact same coat or a coat that looked very much like it. It's probably a giant co-incidence but with all of these snooping revelations that have come out, you really can't be suprised any more. Thanks for your replies all, they are very helpful. I think I will look into both inhouse Joomla, and also Google Sites. Our School also has social media accounts so in a snow emergency we can just log in there if needs be - that is typically where school news is posted first. I read recently that Microsoft are closing down their Google Sites equivalent? that is what makes me a bit nervous about going to all of the trouble of creating a Google website, only to find out that Google have "changed our priorities" and that "Google Sites no longer reflects the vision Google has going forwards" and they end up shutting it down.

seems a little extreme, blocking flight booking websites? is this government advice?

Hi, at the moment I am being told we need to save money in IT which I am sure is a familiar story to most of you. At the moment we pay a firm called Green Schools Online to host and build our website. We basically bought a template, and our staff log in through the webinterface and update the website that way. We haven't had any problems with them, it works well and their support has always been good and if we had no budget issues we probably wouldn't be changing. My question is; what do other schools do regarding their website? in terms of designing it, hosting it etc. Do any schools host their own wordpress sites or things like that? We have our own domain name, servers, Internet link etc so we could host it in house if we wanted it to, we would just have to find someone to build us a website. I can build websites but it would be a lot of work, I wouldn't have enough time to do it being only part time. Do people still pay for third party hosting or have times changed ?

I need to have an operation on my testicle, I have a hydrocele which makes them massive (sorry for too much info) - about the size of a small chicken egg ! the NHS claim hydroceles do not hurt and are only cosmetic but mine aches badly, as the skin is physically being stretched by the water pressure of them filling up with fluid. the NHS said they don't like to operate on them but they will if it is causing me pain. I made the mistake of watching a hydrocelectomy on youtube and it looked brutal. the surgeons I watched, well they did not seem to have a delicate touch let's just say that. it put me right off. I read that in the USA, people simply could not afford the $10,000+ for the operation and ended up draining them themselves with an 18G needle, so that's exactly what I did! I got some needles off the net and that was that! I went to the doctor, he gave me antibiotics and said he saluted my courage! i still said i didn't want the op but unfortunately they have filled back up to the same size again :-( and like the others have said, are you allergec to codeine or to all opiates such as morphine? tramadol is synthetic though it does have side effects; it made me dizzy and taking it 1st thing in the morning actually made me throw up sometimes. i would actually be careful driving on them for the first few days as i cut someone up on a roundabout on them, and now the law has changed - the packaging now has a "new advice for drivers" section

it doesn't say what the actual test will do, it doesn't say if it provides a USB stick for each pupil; all I have is the diagnostics kit. the booklet I have says it must be ran on every workstation. it just collects data about the workstation and I think it saves it via SQL as an SQL instance runs (basically it runs XAMPP)

is anyone else having to run these PISA test diagnostics? the last time we ran the PISA diagnostics it took about 5 minutes per machine maximum. Now it is taking 20+ minutes on our workstations, the fact you need the single USB stick plugged in through all of it, means this pile of pap is taking hours. plus it is failing on over half of our identical workstations - the portable firefox it ships with crashes with a "plugin container" error message; or it just gives a page not displayed error. is anyone else having problems with this bull ?

yeah we had the same with our FORTINET, it was caused by either SSL or some other scanning "feature", yahoo and google mail were affected. happened during our inspection; the inspectors couldn't access their https webmail and the LEA wouldn't disable the "feature".

I think I'm getting old now then, I am 31 now - when I finish work at 4pm usually I am too tired to do anything else such as clean my car etc, all i want to do is chill out at the computer. even going for a drive is cba. I remember 10 years ago when i just started at the job, i'd finish at 4pm then go down the beach for a swim, then going cycling afterwards... couldn't do that now. maybe it's just this winter weather and when the sun comes out i won't be "Low Energy" anymore ?

my old job in an ISP Helldesk callcentre - solid, non stop talking/arguing for 8:30 solid hours a day, 8am - 5:30pm. Normal corporate holidays; heartbreaking when you have a week off as you feel bad if you haven't done something special during every day off because you know you'll be waiting a long time for your next holiday. it meant that during a week off, I could only really enjoy upto Wednesday as on Thurs I'd be worrying about going back to work in a few days. no chance to take a break and a sit down for 10 mins if you needed it, as the calls come in automatically and there is nothing you can do about it. always stressing there will be a shouter or an idiot every time you hear the incoming call "Beep". eventually you hear that Beep in your dreams. All this for minimum wage; people actually looked forward to getting a job at the Aldi's / Lidl's across the road, someone who got in to Lidl's was called a "lucky bastard" that is how bad the place was. no help if you couldn't fix a customers problems. you'd never admit to not being able to fix a customers problems as it made you look foolish, instead you learned to lie to the customer to fob them off the line; when they called back they were someone else's problem. still it gave me the needed 6 months experience working; so I got into the School next. = over £6000 more a year, doing 8-4 instead of 8-5:30. having almost 10 WEEKS MORE off a year. teenage boys who are more polite and better to be around than any of the "it's your problem mate, don't waste my browsing autotrader time" managers at that ISP. having your own office here, when at the ISP I didn't even have my own desk or computer. tbh when I got my job here I was amazed at how petty the things were that the staff here complained about. they would have been laughed out of any private sector job I've had but tbh having the summer off spoils me in a way. I need a higher paying job than Technician due to the housing bubble, but working through the summer when it is a nice day outside just feelsbadman. I remember being so depressed in the callcentre, being stuck inside that dingy place (it had tinted windows, so on a really nice hot summers day, if you could even see outside the tints made it look dull and gray) - all my blue collar friends out in the sun and me stuck in there being shouted at all day

yeah just to update we have been sending the raw MP4's straight from cam, with the appropriate filename/candidate info, on either a USB stick or stack of DVD's. our EO/DM is loathe to give away USB sticks so we tend to send out stacks of DVD's. ours are unencrypted too. it's a very good point actually, I was going to ask our EO but he is busy. perhaps the exam boards don't have the organisational capacity to co-ordinate receiving a USB stick via post, password via e-mail, and combining the two?

i keep finding pen ink squirted all over motherboards in one classroom, unfortunately it fries the motherboards :-( i've tried washing the ink off, leaving it to dry over the weekend, but they still won't POST - i think the act of powering them on with the ink shorts the board and damages it irrecoverably. i once had a call to an inkjet printer (back when we used to use those) that kept jamming. the cause was half of a monster munch (beef flavour). the teacher said "that was the cause, do you know how that got in there?" i wonder...
