Honestly the last thing you want is your hair falling out, most of the time once it falls out, it doesn't come back! what could be worth that ?

I had a nightmare with it here as well, our LEA run our switches, one day we came in to all our cabled machines saying "No Internet" despite the Internet working fine. Problem is if the NLA thinks there is no Internet, certain things like Adobe CC and Office 365 refuse to work. I couldn't get it to work with any workaround except disabling IP4 Offloading on each workstations NIC. Only MS could mess up what should be a basic Internet check like this (the URL's it checks all loaded fine here). For us some of the reg entries would just change the icon so instead of the No Internet globe, it showed a normal Ethernet icon, but it still said "No Internet".

We have Lenovo 100e's no problems with those, though the LCD panels on the latest gen 100e aren't very strong - had a bunch smashed by students while in their bags, the old gen didn't have this problem Lenovo Windows laptops however we've had a large amount of the USB-C charging ports fail, the newer ones have 2 of them though so it's not a massive deal. But when the only USB-C port fails the unit needs a new mainboard. Acer chromebooks all the hinges fail by the 3rd year - the hinges go into those brass "nuts" or holders, but they are only held in by the plastic chassis which soon wears away. As soon as I see an Acer chromebook with a slightly loose hinge I'll open it up and superglue the brass nut things back into place to stop it getting worse.

We ditched BYOD here, thing is even with managed devices staff need to be prepared that bad comments may be posted online - our kids won't lock their machines when they go across to print or whatever, it won't take long for someone else to slyly hop on and post something using their friends logon. "I didn't post that it was my friend on my account" etc. So I'd say setting up something to read every single http POST generated site wide is a loooot of work for what? Plus the long random strings, you might get flags for "SH*T" or other 4 letter strings statistically, would you be able to see what the page was about or would you have to delve into the code ?

Update I had installed some Amazon software called SayHi on the device which worked OK in testing... but come to use it now and it has been discontinued. Back to square one for this language !

Part of our school's problem with the phones seemed to me to be; there would be trouble between children on social media during the school day, and the parents wouldn't take responsibility for their children's actions - instead they would say - "this message was posted during school hours why didn't you magically know about it" kind of thing. Easier just to ban the phones than deal with this. Australia are talking about banning social media for children entirely (of course the kids will just set up their own chat software)

just a note on this sometimes exchange runs as the system user but when you do netsh winhttp show proxy, it runs as Administrator not System and shows no proxy. I had this and the cert was just erroring with can't check revocation. There was a special command I could run to open CMD as System then netsh winhttp show proxy showed an ancient proxy we used to use, no idea how it got there. And what's broken for me is the main hall projector bulb, I need to order a new one then assemble the huge tower to replace it like 10 - 15m high. And they are whining they have assemblies all week this week. Not much I can do until I get the bulb.

yeah I went to delete an old Shared Drive I made on google and it said "This operation is irreversible and all data will be lost" which spooked me as we have a lot of important stuff on shared Google drives and if someone accidentally deleted a shared drive and I wasn't able to recover it we'd be in big trouble. We already have backups, time to look into remote backups now for o365 and google. So is this cloud stuff really saving us money if we have to pay so many license fees it ends up costing more? For now looks like I'll be spending Monday downloading zip files of all our shared drives manually... Edit also reading about this Crowdstrike outage, it seems to me a lot of the times a lot of this "endpoint protection" (what we used to call antivirus I guess) is total garbage as it is, I'm sure I've heard about faulty antivirus updates deleting Windows files making machines unbootable before so this isn't the first time something like this has happened. You'd think Microsoft Windows would be more robust as it is

Do you know how it works for pupils who can't read/write in their own language? each of our teachers has a cheapo lenovo tablet we use for taking photos I'm wondering if the teachers can use voice translate on those. I think the requirement is so the kid can talk to the teacher and vice versa so only the teacher needs one. (the kids are offered chromebooks but he can't read/write any language so it's useless to him) Or do we just end up having to broadcast our lessons in 5 different languages like they do in the UN...

I was wondering if Creative were still around... back in the early/mid 2000's everyone had a soundblaster or audigy. Nobody used onboard sound if a board even had it. But now I don't know a single person with an add on sound card, I'd presumed Creative had gone bust or transitioned into some niche expensive professional gear. I must admit my motherboard's onboard Realtek audio seems good enough but being almost 40 and having deafness in my family I suspect my hearing isn't what it once was... that said my friends setup sounds MUCH nicer than mine but he has proper expensive speakers, amp, and knows how to set it all up. He has some external sound card/amp thing that even glows amber... Part of me remembers a lot of us got our Soundblasters almost more for performance reasons than sound quality, as back then just decoding sound/mp3 playback could take up a good 5 fps of a game back when 30 - 40 fps was normal for us youngsters on a budget. We all had those Creative "surround sound" 4 mini-speakers with the subwoofer for the middle as our speakers. Nowadays I doubt they'd even be considered good enough for a classrooms's speakers here!

During 1993 during Doom's development, John Carmack apparently had some ridiculous 29" CRT monitor - imagine how big a 29" 4:3 LCD would be as a square, then picture that square going back the same depth if not more backwards - the thing was absolutely huge it probably needed 4 people to lift it. Surprised his desk could hold it! Amazingly with 55" LCD panels commonplace, in photos now it actually looks quite small!

Yeah I remember those, they were meant to be great for controlling TV's or for silent work... I once got a nasty shock off a mac, I had taken the plastic screen / LCD off of it and was working on it, but forgot I had left it plugged in, and they don't have an enclosed PSU like PC's - so I must have touched part of the PSU internals as I had a nasty shock!!

I was thinking the exact same thing as this XKCD, If I did this is would likely waste more time than it would save me. Like spending 4 hours scripting a task that would take me 20 minutes only I'd ever do that task three times at the most

I think it's a bit of a sad joke that MS and Google will offer free licenses to schools yet won't offer the licenses good enough to actually safeguard children's data properly. Shows they aren't really actually doing it out of the kindness of their heart after all. They are of course after money and we should never forget that. Anyway my head is swirling with cybersecurity policies after reading page after page of corporate-speak after filling in the Welsh 360 forms showing how well we are complying with online safety, a lot of it basically repeating the same thing over and over but slightly differently. Like others said I wish they could have some more real life examples and actual help than corporate policy speak saying "thou must" but not actually telling you how to accomplish such things.

Yeah I remember in the late 90's, you had to have a full tower PC to be a real geek, even if you didn't use all the 6+ bays they gave you. The bigger the tower the better your specs obviously. I then had a case almost exactly like the one Jaaan posted, with the transparent plastic and a cold cathode strip light that burnt out my molex connector after a few months. Or my friends who would spend all of their cash on the highest spec PC they could get but would use a rubbish 14" CRT from the mid 90's - I always thought what's the point in having all that PC power if you can barely see what's going on? These days with a 55" display and 6+ cores I can consider myself spoiled. But kids these days have supercomputers in their hands compared to the "Gaming Machines" we had in the early 2000's. Wifi, cameras, movie playing, 3D graphics, on a device a 4 year old owns. Now I am all about having a quiet machine, that is out of the way, I don't bother with RGB - I'd rather spend an extra £50 on a better monitor which is where I'm going to be looking at all of the time I'm using my PC, than have a glowing case that sits undera desk. Today the fads are - office PC's are very small things - which is great IMO, I remember the old days where a classroom had 30 desktops and the noise they all put out made it hard to hear the teacher. Now these small units are almost silent. Great. Mice have to resemble something from Star Wars with 10+ buttons - I like a mouse with a lot of buttons but my hands must be too small or something as half of them are so awkward to reach I don't bother with them. And the obligatory DPI button (who wants that?) that I accidentally press then have my cursor turn 100mph.

Does anyone know if this policy will stop the option coming up that allows users to choose different chrome profiles? because we want to keep this enabled (some users have 2 profiles 1 for their HWB and 1 for our own google domain) and I wouldn't want that to disappear

Apologies I posted this on the other section about classcharts but - just had a call about a parent who had viewed their daughter Maggie Thatcher, but got a completely different pupil Christopher Thatcher instead - there has never been a Christopher Thatcher on roll here - I haven't looked fully into this yet as I'm dealing with a diff issue but does anyone know if this has reared its ugly head again? - EDIT - disregard it miscommunication no issue on Classcharts end.

It's weird, unless I'm being daft, English to Pashto supports voice translate but the inverse, Pashto to English does not support voice translate (no mic option) I'm guessing they are still working on it as I think I see new languages/capabilities appear every few months or so. I've been asked this by our SENCO they don't know unfortunately nor do our LEA, they tell us we are basically on our own. I'll check out some of the other suggestions

Just had an issue not sure if people should be aware - I had installed it on staff laptops - but a member of staff has been off sick but has still been e-marking and has uploaded something with the school logo - I don't quite understand it myself but it breaches the employment contract you shouldn't be doing work for other companies if you are off sick.

yeah Pashto is there it must have been Urdu - think the teacher just gave me a list of every foriegn language student we had - Turkish, Russian and Pashto are all there it's jus Urdu that doesn't have the voice option and this was the student that can't read/write - or it could have been Dari which doesn't show up at all (I think it's just a term for Persian which also doesn't have the voice option only text)

Sorry to update this thread - does anyone know a good voice translator for Dari / Pashto / Urdu - the Google Voice Translation does certain languages but not others, and Urdu/Pashto/Dari (not sure exactly which language the student speaks) is not one of them - there is no voice icon for the auto voice translate, it only supports written translation. The problem is the student is totally illiterate even in their own language so we need voice translation. Just wondering if anyone knows any software that can do this?
