For what he's doing though he'll not be using creditors, if he was going to heavily rely on them then it's best to go for an LTD. All he has to do is ensure his SLA's and contracts show he is not liable for anything...

Whatever you do , don't go for an LTD or PLC format - that means YOU are PERSONALLY LIABLE for any losses on the backend of work you do... Just go for sole trader - it costs nothing, talk to the tax man, talk to your local business link direct service (it's free) and choose a trading name to trade under. Pay your NI extra contributions to cover yourself and as long as you earn under something like £30-40K from your work you don't have to worry about VAT. Pick up the phone and talk to the taxman, they'll put you on a self assessment tax return each year in which you'll have to detail main working stuff and your own venture losses and gains. Go for it mate!

I've had mixed experience with most manufacturers, from big names like Dell and HP through Stone and beyond. What I have noticed in the ten years I've been dealing with them is that the kit nowadays is generally a lot 'cheaper' to manufacture. Cases I had ten years ago were much better and sturdier. Components were ballistics-resilient and generally never caused a problem through their lifespan. Their support service is second-to-none in regards replacing kit (though a recent email from them indicates we now have to pay up front for replacement kit before we can claim it back!!) and their sales staff are friendly and helpful (in the whole) compared to some companies. I'm concerned their PC manufacturing lot are letting the side down and they're trying to cut too many cost corners in their latest kit. You shouldn't have to worry (like we do) that the kit is going to detonate component by component. Power supplies burning out, graphics cards overheating, BIOS settings not there, aset tags not inserted as requested, keyboards that don't work with motherboards. To be fair to them, they have tried to resolve most issues when I've raised them - but you shouldn't HAVE to raise these kinds of problems with them, which ultimately causes their sales and support teams a logistical headache. Like HP over ten years ago they seem to be shooting themselves in the foot...

OMFG! Just noticed the same academy wants: Look at the job spec and the personal spec - no degree required, basic typing skills and general office use crapola. How the hell does education justify the price ranges. I'm told that I'm "a manager equivelant to a section head, such as head of technology, head of creative arts etc." and I'm paid only a few thousand more than a freaking typist! I've got to get back out to industry..... quick.

My three year old can successfully use a computer (he has his own old laptop to use for his games and educational activities). He uses it at home supervised to learn about typing (he can type his own name and has started learning other people's names) and to do reading / speaking activities. I'm running him through some filtering too as I don't want the odd "oops" moment when he mashes the URL bar trying to find his games in the address history. We've always brought him up to be inquisitive and he's just naturally in to technology like working our phones to get texts up or pictures and videos ... I'd rather he was using educational sites under supervision as a supplement to his reading activities (he loves his books) and the outdoor / indoor play time he has. He's limited to his time on the units just as at nursery they're limited to each activity to ensure everyone gets a fair share. Funniest thing he's said this year when I gave him his fixed laptop back after he'd been using my macbook pro for a few days: "this is a bit different to my mac daddy" awesome!

If that's your entire budget and you need new networking / servers / workstations you're screwed! I've been offered 50K again which has to cover: Renovation of 5 computer labs Reconstruction of a dying 7-year-old 1Gbps core network to latest gen Implementation of a wireless network Payment of all licensing Payment of county broadband (£15K alone!) Payment for replacing dead projectors around the school (5 at last count) All consumables (toner, cd's, usb sticks, cables etc.) Much laughing at them after they refused the notion of £250K required.. and yeah... the CV is with many agencies right now...

We were going to sort out some performance issues with our SAN disks, but they've scheduled little darling children in the building for revision so it looks like we'll just have to spend the time carrying food around the site for the dumplings to eat while they revise.

An A-Level IT teacher at the college I worked for in my first job was tasked with helping me install some labs as "he was an MCP and techy as well as a teacher". When unpacking the boxes and peripherals he was constantly plugging keyboard and mouse in the wrong holes (even though keyboard, mouse and sockets were colour-coded) - to top it off he showed me a Cat 5 cable and said "where does this go?" to which I replied "in the only one that it'll fit... hang on.. no.. THIS ONE ONLY." Better not leave room for mis-interpretation. MCP and techie my ar** Loads of "my computer isn't working" across the years to only turn up and find there's no power cables into the machine. Had a section of one of the schools I taught at and did some tech bits with the NM keep having networking issues in an area, they kept unplugging the switch rack from the wall to put their kettle in. "It ALWAYS does this when I go to make a cup of tea" the teacher said. "Funny that" I say "whenever YOU plug the kettle in to where OUR equipment was YOU shut the network down." So many useless statements over the years they just all merge into one ball of MEH!

But several of the actors perished due to excessive horse-related death scenes...
