We noticed an issue in the classroom API recently which caused the "descriptionHeading" field to never be returned in the data. The issue has been fixed by google as of yesterday (https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/409266271). It could be related to that.

Hopefully you got sorted. If not, or to anyone else with the same problem, the PhotoExporter has been updated today. It can now generate it's own configuration file - provided that the SIMS assemblies can be located on the machine. The information on the website needs to be updated to reflect this new version but the README included in the zip is up-to-date.

I doubt you'd be able to achieve it with mono. .NET framework on WINE may be your best bet but I doubt it would be smooth sailing.
