  1. So, I'm busy testing a new image on our Acer laptops (the image I built actually on them, with all the Acer drivers broke the trackpad on them rendering one of our laptop trollies useless) and I come to check that the screen resolution (and a few other things) are set properly now. Nothing unusual you might say, however, when I went to Right Click the Desktop to choose Screen Resolution, I did 2 fingers on the track pad and left click .. It's my own fault as I try to do things remotely these days so everything is in one place and saves physical access to the servers and such, but I'm Mac based so when I don't have my Magic Mouse with me.. Meh, I'm just making excuses now! lol .. What faux pas do others make when working between systems then? Linux terminal commands in windows command line? Go on, make me feel not quite so stupid! lol ..
  2. Good afternoon all Quick question, those of you who do, who do you use for reselling remote backup services to schools / businesses etc? I'm just looking into it as an offering myself as more clients move to business fibre connections and such. Thanks Andy
  3. Ace.. I'll do that then.. Cheers
  4. Oh I know it's not the best, but it's what they know .. it's one of those it's just easier to let them use that than try and show them how to use another piece of software, no matter how easy it might be to use and what not .. you know what teachers are like I'm sure! lol ..
  5. Ok good people, good afternoon .. First of all, I don't want this to get into a "you can/can't do xyz with copyright issues" and such discussion, there's way too many of those on EduGeek already, but I just have a simple question. A couple of our staff use Media Player to rip in CDs (mainly the relaxation sort) for use with some more complex needs groups but as some CD drives work, some don't etc (you all know schools IT .. lol) they rip them in. Problem being, not matter how many times I say "when it asks you if you want to add copy protection choose no" they ignore me, I get called to a room, and surprise surprise, WMA file with Copy Protection. So, I want to stop them being able to add copy protection on files they rip in, and just wondered whether there was a way to do this top down (i.e. GPO or GPP). I know there's the "Prevent Windows Media DRM Internet Access" option which I guess would stop the DRM server being contacted, but will that stop it adding DRM or will it just stop them being able to rip CDs. I mean, there's part of me (don't get out the pitchforks) that thinks I'll stop Media Player and just force iTunes upon them all .. but then that would be too much of a learning curve for some staff etc .. Cheers Andy
  6. If only the staff here would use their e-mail .. (side note: who blocks hotmail/gmail etc to force staff to stop using their personal e-mail for work purposes?)
  7. Cheers. I'll take a look at that later / tomorrow Edit: Just taken a quick look now whilst waiting for the server in question to reboot anyway .. lol .. I'd have to create a list of computers for this option wouldn't I? Then if a particular computer isn't turned on, how gracefully does psexec fall over? I've only ever used it for singular tasks.
  8. 'twas probably Net Send or something along those lines, but as you rightly pointed out, that has been depreciated due to it's spammy abilities .. Thanks though .. now go rest, rummaging through recesses of brains is not something to be taken lightly and should only be undertaken with proper supervision!
  9. Yeah, looked at msg before. I'd read it as being only suitable for TS environments, but I might be wrong, I'll give it a test .. EDIT: Just tested this, works great for my user when I Remote on to a server and send a message from another, however, sending a message to a client machine that I'm logged on at comes back with "user does not exist or is disconnected"
  10. Yeah, no money for something like that sadly .. So looking for a free tool, which I know, you get what you pay for and such, but there we go ..
  11. Afternoon All Right, how do you go about messaging all logged in users at once in an ad hoc situation, say for when a server needs a reboot over lunch, or when a network piece of software is going to be updated? It's not often I would need such a thing really, but I'm just about to do an upgrade on BSquared, and I thought it would be great to (as with the old Net Send days) buzz a message round to all logged on machine (or even switch on machines) to say "I'm about to do x y and z" so they are aware of it. This is for Server 2008R2 and W7 Pro Clients. Thanks Andy
  12. Yeah, this is one, but I think they're wanting something along the lines of they log in to a secure e-mail system (doesn't have to be part of Office 365, but if it is, great) send an e-mail to someone and they get an e-mail saying they've been sent a secure e-mail but can only access it by then logging into a secure system somewhere. It's how the Lancashire County system works at present and they quite like that. I suspect they can probably just make use of that system as it's not a part of the Online Services we're moving away from, but part of County stuff itself ..
  13. Afternoon All So, we're moving away from the CLEO/OCL Online Bundle and for the e-mails we're going to use the free Office 365 Package for Education, all straight forward enough. The question I have though is regarding secure e-mail services. Now, up until this point, we've never really needed to send secure e-mails outside of the Lancashire system, and we will still be able to use the secure e-mail system for Lancashire for sending e-mails as we need to currently, but we're in the process of registering for a new examinations board who have asked about the secure transmission of data and exam papers. Papers is easy, they're packaged up in the stuff provided by the exams board, then put in a courier bag and sent for a next day, but I've been asked to investigate the options for secure e-mail transmissions now, so I thought I'd ask the question what does everyone else do for secure e-mails? I know there is a secure e-mail option for some of the enterprise editions of Office 365, but I can't find anything relating to the Educational editions. Thanks all Andy
  14. I presume you have either interactive whiteboards or some form of projection surface mounted in the class room (be it actually on the wall, or on a trolley)? In that case, as others have muted, why not have the remotes fastened to these. You could buy some small chain, a couple of small self tapping screws or some sort of adhesive, then you simply chain the remote for the projectors into the room where it can be angled to make sure it works properly and such and isn't too restrictive, but staff would all know where they are kept. If you use the "PC Control" functions of the remotes, and this is a reason why you want them to have their own, buy them all wireless presenter controllers or something instead that they can take around with them and plug in to the various PCs and what not. It just seems a big thing to do to go buying them all a remote that will work all, when it's cheaper to tell the staff no. Ok, they might not like it, but if you think that possibly these remotes are going to cost you, conservatively, £20 each or so, and you say you have 80 projectors, thus I'm guessing probably at least a similar number of staff, that's at least £1600 that could be spent somewhere else.
  15. I've got PaperCut MF here. I think (from what I remember when I fired it up once) it pretty much locks itself down to that anyway, but I'll try and take a ganders. You could essentially just have an old machine with Linux on set to only run it, that way it doesn't need to be anything fancy, could even be an old laptop or something, and is purely built for that purpose. I was considering it here until we got machines that do the whole pin code release thing with the device ESA .. EDIT: You could of course just have a web interface on a computer and lock it to a single address (http://:9191/release) and use that instead of the release client as well, or have a link to this interface on an Intranet Page or something?
  16. Ah .. I see .. and there was me thinking the school had a windfall or something .. I've PM'd you Phil's contact details ..
  17. Getting some money up there mate? lol .. We use GBM Tech (GBM Digital Technologies | Home) .. It's a guy called Phil Harrison that I usually deal with for schools supplies.
  18. In the Restrictions settings for the device profile you're managing (so MDM > Settings > Enforce Restrictions) towards the bottom you will see a check box for "Global HTTP Proxy - Force HTTP traffic through a proxy" .. check this and you can put your settings in ..
  19. Yeah, mine (APC Smart UPS 3000) has the self test on it, which when I'm bored of a summer I'll press .. lol .. but most of the time, I forget ..
  20. Each server is directly connected to the UPS so they get told directly from them that there's an issue instead of relying on switches (hence not being too fussed regarding switch UPS) but I do like the suggestion from @twin-turbo about having the ability to get remotely notified of failure and/or successful reboots and what not, so might look into it for the core.
  21. 3 in the main cab, then I have 7 other sub cabs around with a single switch in each .. so if anything, I'd only look to cover the main cabinet, but to be fair, everything came up fairly well without the need for teachings hunting me down with pitchforks and flaming torches, so I'm good with that for now .. lol ..
  22. So, you know the issue, how to really test the UPS setup to make sure that it functions correctly in the even of a power outage etc. I've never really got round to it, other than switching it off at the mains, but thanks to the local power outage we've just had, I now know it works rather well .. lol .. Ok, my switches aren't covered by it, but the servers kept spinning! Whoop .. Wasn't off long enough to test the safe shut down procedure, so I'll do that another time perhaps .. lol .. Right, now, where was I before I was so rudely interrupted ..
  23. Ah well .. that is a shame .. thanks
  24. Evening all Does anyone know, is the Draytek 2850Vn meant to show line speeds and such for use with the Bandwidth Limits / QoS etc? Just that I'm looking at mine at the moment, and noticed it doesn't, so wondered whether it was meant to. Just need to split down the speeds a bit and such (prioritise my business bandwidth usage over the younger ones in the house getting the latest torrent or downloading the latest game update etc), but I wasn't sure how it would do if it's not picking up line speeds / displaying line speeds etc. Cheers all Andy
