  1. Wow.. I've seen people damage USBs before, but it takes a certain kind of person to damage a PS/2 connector.. Especially like this!! Wow! Andy
  2. Afternoon All I've raised a ticket with Parallels for this, but figured I'd see if anyone on here has managed to get the "Get Windows 10" to recognise Parallels as being able to run Windows 10 and therefore reserve the copy for the release date? At the moment, I just get an error saying my PC won't run it because of the Parallels Display Drive (WDDM) (see image of error). I'm hoping there will be a fix on the way from Parallels, but if anyone out there has found a way round this I'd be interested to hear. Thanks Andy
  3. I'll give this a go. I did try disabling the Synaptics, but didn't uninstall, so I'll see if that makes a difference.
  4. It is a genuine power adaptor and I have tried that, though more by default than design (tried it with it plugged then moved desks so he could get on with some work but unplugged it as the adaptor is buried amongst other leads).
  5. Just spotted your response. Not a touchscreen and everything else is unplugged from it. Tried it multiple ports, but will also give the live CD option a try too. Thanks!
  6. Yeah, I'm leaning towards the latter as checked his mouse over and tried a second one, but I will take mine that I know works fine on everything else with me next time I'm passing.
  7. Thanks both. Tried different surfaces / pads. Not really shiny just standard wooden desks and a couple of differing mouse pads tried. I might take my mouse with me next time and see what happens with that.
  8. Evening All I've got a client with an interesting problem. He prefers using an external mouse when working with his laptop, yet recently, whenever he plugs a mouse into the laptop (on any USB port) the cursor starts to shake on the screen and makes it completely unusable. As soon as you unplug it again, it's fine. The TouchPad works perfectly on the machine. With the mouse, it takes a few minutes on first boot for it to start shaking and we've tried a secondary mouse on the laptop as I thought it would most likely be the mouse, but the same thing happened. Today I've popped in and made sure the latest drivers for USB Controller / Chipset / etc are all installed on the machine and rebooted to try again and again, it was fine for the first few minutes, but then started again. I also tried disabling the track pad in case the computer was getting confused messages from both etc. So, anyone got any ideas of anything else I could possibly try on it? It's a HP ProBook 4530s in case it's something someone has come across before with them? Thanks Andy
  9. Yeah, the lack of flexibility is something I've fed back saying that they would need to make sure there was still a "what if" budget - for instance we've just replaced a drive in the servers array over half term because it was showing signs of failure, but I've also said it's a great time to assess their needs and look at what is required by different departments and do things differently in terms of making up of the budget for the IT purchases (i.e. everyone uses it so there should be an element for IT in everyones budget etc).
  10. Good morning folks First off, I hope I'm posting this in the right place, I'm never certain of the best place to post questions like this, so do feel free to relocate it to the right place if I've got it wrong. One of my schools has been approached (such is the time just after budgets are out) by an asset finance house (Maxxia to be precise) which has got them thinking about possibly going down that route as the desktops are starting to age a bit and it might be a good thing to do to get everything up to spec again and offer them the chance to spread those purchases over several budgets instead of taking a hit upfront etc. In the interest of good practice, I said they need to do ask questions of others who have done this and I said I'd post something on here to see if any one has experience of asset financing, how have you found it, were you locked in to buying a particular brand, are there any asset finance companies you would recommend (or conversely steer well clear of), etc, etc. Thanks y'all Andy
  11. Agree with the guys above really. You need filter plugs not the bog standard ear plugs if you're working with sound (i.e. you're doing the mixing). If you're (and I mean no offense by this) just a runner and not involved in the mix then you can get away with less advanced solutions and go for the ear defender type approach, but if you're needing to hear it clearly still, but just at a lower volume, then you need to be looking at decent filters. I have a set at home that I use when I'm mixing FOH (or generally when I'm playing in the same room as our guitarist and he's decided to bring a new amp to try out .. GAH! though, I do have some nice IEMs now that helps reduce that so I can hear myself on the keys! lol) but even with the filtered version, I'm not entirely convinced they're good for the mix.
  12. I tend to use Ubiquiti kit, works nicely without the associate price tags of some others ..
  13. And the winner is ... *drum roll* bad profile .. managed to get my own admin log on back and working, though the main administrator account could be an issue with rebuilding it .. but at least I have a control on the Group Policies again .. now to stop people winging about Flash / Acrobat / etc asking for updates .. lol ..
  14. So perhaps not local administrator! lol .. But I do have another admin account that I've not logged on with previously, so I'm giving that a whirl .. *sometimes I wonder exactly how I got into IT, and more to the point, how I keep in it! I blame Monday mornings!*
  15. Ok, so this gets a bit weirder .. The old server I mentioned (no longer a DC, but still running 2008 R2 non the less) I ran the GPM on there and managed to edit the policy that I wanted to without any issues, where as when I do that on the PDC I get the error above. GAH! Do I log on as a local admin and rename profiles to then log on as admin and see if that solves the issue, or will that cause other issues (not that I can see if should, but figured I'd ask the hive again! ) Thanks All Andy
  16. Hmm, I'll check the AV. Hopefully the user profile isn't up the spout as it's the Admin profile, though I'll try logging on with my other admin account and see what comes of that. Thanks Andy
  17. Hate to bump, but just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what could be causing this? Thanks Andy
  18. Right, so I'm needing to change a few GPO settings (new drive maps, new internet proxy settings etc) and I'm hitting a brick wall with an error: I've had a quick Google about, but I'm not really finding anything useful. Could anyone give any pointers? Things I have checked, making sure the DC has the correct permissions and is the PDC and checking where the GPO is trying to pull from / save. I'd really like to avoid having to flatten the server and start again. It's the only DC on site, though there is an old server which sits there looking pretty and running the WSUS and WDS. Thanks all Andy
  19. Have you tried a different monitor in the setup in case it's just the monitor that has gone? If it does the same with another monitor that you know is working elsewhere then you've removed one element from it at least.
  20. Totally agree, they were saying about building something up in Excel that would work, so I pointed out by the time they've paid for the staff time in doing that you'd be better off learning Nova T that we already pay for as part of our SIMS package. They quite like the sticky notes and board option, but it's when things change that becomes complex. I think they're going to contact a few of our Link Schools to find out what they do for timetabling and visit them to see it in action. Thanks Andy
  21. Thanks both. @Linfit, I totally agree, hence why I'm considering Alchemy as a sideline if I can find it. Especially with what they're after doing. I'll see if I can get my hands on Nova to play with and download the free trial of Timetabler to see how it compares for them.
  22. Good afternoon everyone One of my schools has decided they would rather (having been told for a while things are available) move to a software based timetabler. Now, they do have Nova T as part of their SIMS licensing from the LEA, but they don't like it because it's too complicated for their needs. I've not played with it, so I don't know if that's actually the case or not. In light of that, I need an easy idiot proof timetabling software that can cope with not only teaching staff but also support staff for a varied timetable through an SEN school. Any suggestions? For me, I think alchemy might be an easier pursuit, but hey ho! lol Thanks Andy
  23. Solved it. Forgot about the precedence of Shared Permissions vs NTFS permissions, so whilst I had restrictions on the lower folders, I hadn't given the better permissions on the main share that the NTFS would then be able to restrict. I never did get the reason behind all of that, but hey ho, sorted now!
  24. Afternoon All I have an interesting problems at the moment. At one of my schools, they wanted each class to have it's own shared area, but then they wanted each member of staff to have access to all those areas so they can drop files into them for the students depending on the class, and to make it easier, breaking them down into Key Stage Groups (as the classes are - SEN School). Now, this was easy at one point when the files all had the same permissions as they were just shared out depending on the OU the pupil was in (so Class 3.1 would have \\server\class-shares$\KS3\Class3.1, 4.3 would be \\server\class-shares$\KS4\Class4.3 etc) but lately, staff have been dumping files into the KS3 and main folder instead of the class folders and then complaining that the pupils can't access them. I tried pointing out they couldn't, so I decided to lock it down with permissions, which seemed to work for a while, but has stopped, and I'm confused. I'll try explain the setup and permissions So, I have the main folder (11 - Class Shares) on the server which shares out to \\server\class-shares$ - This folder has full permissions for Admin and System and had Read & Execute, List and Read setting for Staff. I then have 3 Folders in here (KS3, KS4 and KS5) which has the same permissions as above. The staff permissions in both cases are limited to that folder only to stop any traversing of permissions causing issues. Then in each of the KS3/4/5 folders I have the Class folders (so Class3.1, Class4.3, Class5.2 etc). Each of these have Full permissions for Admin, System and now Staff, and have the Modify set of permissions of Students. The problem I have is that now staff and students can't save work, create folders, delete work etc in those end Class folders. I have tried pushing the permissions down but to no avail, so I'm a bit confused as to why it's now not working. They can all view the documents fine enough, so I suspect there's something else going on, but my brain isn't working today, so I thought I'd ask the EduBrain instead. Thanks all Andy
  25. Took me 3 hours on and off the phone to LEA support and it was only when I'd spotted a folder missing in the DOCSTORAGE that posed the question "has something disappeared" .. Glad you've sorted your issue out too. Andy
