Just thought i'd drop a 'hang in there' note to you all, it's worth it in the end. I just took the 5th exam today and am now MCSA:) 18 months, lots of waiting for exams, one exam failure and a very patient wife... For the record i did 271(MCP)+272(MCDST) followed by 290,291 and 270(MCSA) Also if it is of any help(i'm sure anyone would agree) the phrasing of the questions tends to cause more problems than the actual content(presuming you've learnt it) Oh, and forgetting how you would REALLY fix things helps a little too... You have to set a maintenance schedule from the console....and time Sophos/windows updates etc to coincide with the 'thawed' machines.

Deployed Vista school wide over the summer. (barring 5 machines with 'odd' software installed) Only real problems have related to program security for students. I agree that the end users do not 'see' many of the changes in Vista, but having taken the plunge the 'little' changes they do get seem to be appreciated. GP under vista much nicer to use too, plus remote server admin toolkit is very nice to use.

Just to add a little to the mix, we have a Tape drive back up Mon-Thursday, Friday (3x weekly + 1 monthly on rotation) . This backs up all Data worth backing up. System state from DC's is done via Acronis, Daily/Weekly(to remote share) and Monthly(local) AND (!) using the redundant 50%(ish) of hard drive space on five machines, we use Karen's Power tool(FREE) to back up the student 'Year group' shares daily (runs to schedule and filters junk too) This enables us(IT) and certain staff to also 'reinstate' deleted work at a moments notice. Yes, the machines are shut down once the backup has finished:D

It sounds more like power settings causing the connection to drop. We have Vista laptops with redirected desktops etc and had this problem for a while, changing the sleep/hibernate/hard drive timing has stopped it. It also would not show up it event log as the behaviour is 'normal' Worth a look....

You should be able to use the Man profile and folder redirection via group policy(to each user area) to have the best of both worlds. Our school does it with favorites and certain parts of application data.

Not seen it mentioned here but we use Lanschool. Shows all machines and users logged on. Allows remote control,remote run, screen capture, net blocking by room or individual, Net activity printing and screen broadcast plus other bits and pieces.

In response to _BAt_ same complaint from our staff re : loss of quick send etc. However dumping a staff list from CMIS as a CSV and importing into address book seems to have stopped a few grumbles...Just tick the boxes ;-)

We have configured the channels(teacher) to cover each machine OU(pupils) There is also an 'over' channel where all machines can be seen. This allows individual or group net blocking, print screen ie log ect. Remote control, screen broadcast/freeze. Collect and send files. But from my point of view the 'run at...' option saves an age in installation/drive mappings ect you can even send links to force the pupils browser to open to a particular page. Channel 0 is our friend(all machines except teachers-those who control the channels) Definately worth a look ?!

I have just started using K-lite on a few of the school machines as this includes Media player Classic. Or there is AVS dvd player another freebie but struggle with some discs that have flash intros..... :?

Geoff you are a star. We recently had a council guy come in and add an msi to install Parago Audit on each machine upon boot. Since then each morning the error regarding 'it's already installed' has appeared on the server in question. I shall look into this first thing tomorrow. Again guys thanks soooo much ;-)

Lovely support guy came out today(very expensive) It would appear that the second IP address on the Admin server was a mistake. So it has been removed. FRS apparently started erroring back in June(around about the time the other server 'died') At close of play today replication was working and security issues with pupils profiles has been sorted. There is still an error on Component services(red mark on My Computer) on the curriculum server. GPMC is only working on an XP client, NOT on the server..But Desktops and start menus are working hopefully tomorrow will bring a resolution to the remaining issues..Thanks all for your help

Hope i'm looking in the right place but..in Tcp/ip properties it is pointing to itself(preferred) and to the other server(alternate) via the 'unreachable' gateway?!

Okay getting just a little confused right about now The W2K3 server has one NIC. It can not resolve the stated 'gateway', GPM says network path not found. File replication is showing errors relating to the in ability to resolve the share(it explains the possible causes and suggests forcing a stop/start of ntfrs) Which due to the fact it can't reach the other server is obvious. The W2K server has two NIC's a 10/100 and a 1000. The 10/100 has been disabled. The event log for this machine is altogether more relaxed and has more warnings than anything else suggesting that it can't contact the other server but will try again later(if it feels like it?) AD and GP both work as 'normal' except for the fact its obviously not right. The significant error is that shown from netdiag : no gateway! Having neither set the servers up or having paid that much attention in the past(or being responsible for them) this is a new one on me. cheers for the help

Monday..How nasty? Anyway i ran Netdiag and came up with errors(no surprise there) -Default Gateway Test (fail) no gateway reachable for this adapter -DNS test - (fail) FATAL dns registration for " " is incorrect on all DNS servers Not completely sure what caused this, i have been told today that one of the (i didn't know there were two) network cards was disabled by EDIT last week. The servers IP address' are correct, however i can not ping the stated IP for the Gateway?? All other tested items (netdiag) are passed. Having not too much joy at the moment, help please

Cheers again, i had the security on the profile folder set as instructed by an MS walktrough(create a user MPM, copy locally ect) but will check again. Have downloaded the suggested program will try and see what shows up on what looks to be a very busy Monday(like there is any other sort!)

Very quick thank you ChrisH, have downloaded both now i will wait...till Monday. I actually stated the problem started with the server(W2k3) i meant to say it started after the summer when i upgraded all the clients to XP Sp2 from 2000. I deleted the old profiles, i was using mandatory for the pupils but have not been able to get that to work either since. Cheers again

A quick thanks to a very useful bunch of people, been reading for a while and it seems that i am not suffering alone However, the school i work for (which means me) has this problem: Two servers one W2k3 and one W2k, the newer one for curriculum and the other for Admin(we had another but someone else found out what happens if you boot to CD and don't know what you are doing :twisted: ) The first issue is folder redirection(i have read most of the posts on this) not working for all students ALL of the time. I am only redirecting desktop and start menu its very temperamental. The GP i have(vbs script) for setting default printer per room(OU) only works when the full set of policies work. All of this started when the curriculum server was upgraded. I have checked(today) after reading about the SYSVOL and FRS to discover that not only is that not working(path not found) but GPM on the W2k3 server has completley lost the will to find anything and just reports errors. Have tried stopping and restarting the service as per error message and running Net Share. :?: So... i thought i would share a few of my woes instead of continuing fishing through microsofts Volumes of 'help'. Thanks in advance
