  1. We use Hive - this is in a Trust of 45+ schools - works great. if you have any questions more than happy to help answer them.
  2. Hello All I have a site that has some Optima visualisers. The software for this - DC Pro needs admin rights to run - which isn't going to happen. So I am looking for some other software that the staff can use. What do you all use with your visualisers? TIA
  3. 100% - Anything new that is purchased I first read the T&Cs and then if it has something in that I don't understand its passed over to someone else who understands the legal stuff and not the technical stuff - that way we have no surprises.
  4. If you are looking after a primary - IMO Smoothwall is way overpriced and totally overkill for a primary school. It offers so many services you just wont use. RM does offer a great filtering system - and from what I know - you don't even have to have RM as ur broadband provider. That said - its worth a look while your shopping for a solution.
  5. ISPs will offer you whatever speed you are after - within that ISPs package. Some schools may not want a synchronous connection. with Broadband - it isn't as simple as 1 solution works for all. While I agree whats happened to the above is wrong - IMO if they don't do the 220 upload - then the OP should be pushing to be put onto the next tariff up at no additional cost. But that said - if the T&Cs that were signed (which no one reads) allow this - there is not much you can do.
  6. Hi Brenda Thank you for the update - I actually worked this out this morning :-) - But none the less thank you for the update to confirm this is the correct way forward with Mobility Print. Would be nice if the dev team at PC can add a bit of text on the section where you download the .mobileconfig file and say if you are using a system like Intune - don't use the config file and a link to the tech doc you post above. May save others some wasted time of wondering why its not working :-) Thanks again
  7. Hello All Hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year. I have a question. I run Mobility Print at a few schools for Apple devices, and others to print. Mobility Print allows you to download a config file that you can run on an iPad and it will import the settings and allow printing. I think off the top of my head it's a .mobileconfig file. When I try and pull this into intune (to mass deploy) intune doesn't like the text within the file - it thinks it's not structured correctly and won't allow it to be imported. Is anyone else out there who uses Mobility Print and Intune - and if so - how have you pushed out printers from Mobility Print? TIA
  8. This is something we haven't managed to get around. Thankfully - our devices for staff are 121 - So staff don't move around devices much. When they do move - yes they have to use the link in the email to re-link the Hive account to the profile on that new device. Which can be an arse. If the email has been lost - Staff can use the "Send new Password" button on the printers so they get a fresh copy of the email. Would be nice to remove this step - but I cant see any other way to do this - else the system won't know who they are when a job is submitted. But it is something I am looking at currently.
  9. So we have a server at each site - this becomes what PaperCut calls a super node and each users device is an edge node. But as all 45 schools are in the same tenancy - anyone can printer and go to any of the 100 or so printers at any of the schools, enter the user's code, or use the key card and it will show them the jobs they have waiting to be printed. Hive is new so it is missing some of the functions like stapling etc - but there are ways around this until official support comes in. But for what it is, and how much we pay for it - its a great solution that allows staff and users to move around schools and to be able to print from anywhere.
  10. One of the original Trusts to sign up to Hive. 45 Schools all in Hive (well almost all) The system for what it is has worked brilliantly. From the feedback I have had from others, it really does matter which Print company you are using. For me, all our schools are with Konica and they have been epic in helping roll hive out to all schools. I have others who are using other print companies and they are having a crap time getting the system set up. For us tho, all in all, its gone great. We have a direct link to the chaps at PaperCut and they have also been great - even coming out to site a few times to work on issues we are having. It will be nice to get extra functionality like stapling etc, but we knew when buying into the system that was on the road map and it will come - just wish it was a little sooner But all in all - very very happy with the system. for our 45 schools its worked out great.
  11. Like I said everyone is welcome to an opinion, but the stats around pay scales, etc, and needs - which EduUser will need to take into account if they move to a cloud offering are totally different. You only need to look on LinkedIn or any job boards to see this. You will pay a lot more for an MS Intune-qualified engineer vs a school ICT technician. Don't get me wrong some schools may be happy for someone who isn't qualified. That is a call they have to make. But to say it isn't true with lots of evidence to back this up. IMO is incorrect and wrong. For the flexibility - yes I agree with you 100%, a Vanilla system will ALWAYS be more flexible than a CCx network. To say otherwise would be totally stupid. But what CCx and other like Ergo F2T does is provide a management interface that anyone can use. whereas Vanilla systems doesn't. again needing a more skilled person to manage which will come with a higher cost. Finally - yes lots of people here on EduGeek will have knowledge of intune it's been around for years. But there is knowing your way around intune to be able to progress a school's move to the cloud vs being qualified and knowing it like the back of your hand to a point where you can 100% support it without any 3rd party help/advice. On that note - I know we won't agree - but we can always agree to disagree 😁 Have a good evening.
  12. While everyone is welcome to an opinion you only have to look at the pay scales for these roles. If you look at how much schools want to pay for say an entry-level IT Technician you are looking at around 15k to maybe around 25k (again depending on what area of the UK you are from) Take a look on say LinkedIn for establishments that are looking for Intune-qualified people - They are paying 50k plus, some over double that. No way schools will be able to afford that kind of wage for 1 member of an IT Team. If you are picking up an Intune-educated staff member for 18 to 27k I would be questioning the knowledge of that person. As for the other comment I made - Why would you strongly disagree? - Would be nice to have some content behind your comment so I can understand why you would strongly disagree. Rather than just saying you strongly disagree.....
  13. RM CC4 is still fit for purpose depending on what the school's needs are. Those saying it's EOL and not fit for purpose are incorrect IMO. CC4 has always taken a bashing - Heck so did CC3, and Connect back in the day as people always thought they could do better for cheaper. In some cases yes you could. But these people never fully understood that all schools are in the same boat as they are. You have schools that don't have an IT dept and leave the management of devices to the IT staff who also have to teach. You also have schools where they do have IT staff and when you start to scratch the surface these staff don't have a clue what to do on vanilla systems - I have seen this first hand, schools advised by IT staff to remove CC4, or Ergo's F2T system saying they could do better - 12 months later then have moved on as they didn't have a clue and left the school high and dry. Also in response to some of the other posts again - IMO - We can't use Protected Accounts / Service Accounts for fear of breaking things. - This is incorrect - nothing is stopping you from creating service accounts for software e.g Backup Exec, Veeam - You wouldn't create them as CC4 users - but AD users. Servers out of date/support (our CC4 servers are 2016) with no approach from RM to update them. - I assume you have some point of contact at RM - you can get CC4 running on a more current Server OS. eg Server 2019 but it will no doubt be a service you would have to pay for to get them updated. Just moved to UEV last year in order to upgrade Win10 OS, but then discover UEV is all but retired now. Wouldnt say that is an RM issue - Would be putting that one at Good old Bill Gates door. Another way to also look at this - CC4 has been around as a system long before Cyber Essentials was even thought about. So yes it may not be geared to Cyber Essentials but if you are an RM school I am sure a chat with RM could soon fix that. Some people have mentioned cloud-only solutions - these are also good for example MS Intune / Endpoint - or whatever Microsoft is calling it this week. But these come with a higher cost to manage and maintain due to skill sets that are needed to keep them up to date, manage the day-to-day running, and at the same time test and trial new functionality. I guess I will end this by saying IMO - A CC4 network is good when used correctly (I have used both CC3 and 4 in the past) - when you want to move outside of what CC4 offers then you will have issues as things are not as flexible as they could be. But on the other hand, you can have a vanilla system or even a cloud system which will cost you more to manage and maintain and require a higher-skilled person or team to do this vs what a CC4 network would. It's all swings and roundabouts and what fits the needs of one school won't work for another.
  14. You can do everything in AD / GPO you can do in PDQ - I personally always fine PDQ the lazy way of doing things.
  15. Evening all So I should have really asked this question first, but got sidetracked on trying to find a workaround, and then once I found one thought I would ask how you lot (that use Target Tracker) go about applying the license to the devices. So from some very poor software design, I found that TT installs to a users profile, which is horrid in an EDU setting as the chances of a student using the same machine twice is very limited, and schools that are moving to a serverless school don't have roaming profiles so when something gets installed to the user's local profile its a nightmare. So with TT when it is installed to a local profile, the user then has to upload into the software a file which is that school's license key. granted it only has to be done once, but none less has to be done, again and again, if the user swaps devices or the local profile is removed for whatever reason. After speaking with TT they advise they don't have a way around this - and they advise we keep the key on a shared drive and the student then imports it if it's asked for. This is for me and my setup isn't practical and is just very poor software design. So I have found a workaround for it - but to those of you who also use Target Tracker - How do you get around this? do you simply store the file on a local share, and get the student to upload the license file when needed? Or do you have another way? TIA
  16. If you still have onsite servers you need access to - Then you are not really ready for a full intune environment. Taking what you have said above - I would 1) Move from Papercut - To Hive - Have this running on over 40 primary schools and working well. 2) Software deployment - Move this 100% to intune, yes it's a little flakey, but it works fine once you know what hoops you have to jump through. You can then get rid of the onsite servers, and save some cash at the same time
  17. Hello All I have installed Google Drive for a number of my users- These machines have restrictions placed on them (via Intune) but nothing that I can see that's stopping the below and was wondering if anyone has any advice. So Google Drive is installed - when the user goes into My Computer and selects the G Drive the software installs they are given the below error message. Now I am thinking it has something to do with the fact that the G drive it has created is a virtual drive, that does not exist. But I can't find anything online to fix this, or even where to start looking through our system to remove whatever setting is blocking it. Has anyone else seen this error? and if so how did you manage to fix it, please :-)
  18. Acronis use to support this ability - but they removed it a few versions ago. From what I can see on the Acronis forms this has caused some issues with customers and they are looking to add it back in again. Fingers crossed.
  19. While I think you for the reply, it doesn't matter why I need to change them - I simply do. So unless you are aware of a program that allows this then have a good day.
  20. Hello All Quick question - I have a licence for Acronis which has worked well over the years - But I have found today when I take a backup, and then try and open this backup on my machine it opens the backup in Read-Only mode. This is causing me issues as I need to change some permissions on a folder which as it's in read-only mode it won't let me. Due to this does anyone know of any other software that will allow me to take a backup of a systems drive and then browse this on my PC and make changes to the volume. TIA Danny
  21. I have just installed this at over 25 schools all part of the same trust - Works great.
  22. Hello All Has anyone managed to create an SSID in Central that connects into a Google tenancy and authenticates users? Have you followed any guide etc on how to do this? It's something I need to look at doing - But I cant find anything on HP's site on how to do this. TIA
  23. Hello all So I have an old 2008 server that has now given up and decided it will no longer power on. So new server on order, but in the meantime I have pulled the USB HDD from the server that was configured to use Windows Server Backup, and thought I would connect this up to a PC and explore the VHD file and get some user data out ASAP for the users. But - No - Nothing is ever that simple. Looks like WSB has formatted the drive (given its label) and my PC knows it has a volume on it - but I cant access it - Short of finding another server etc does a program exist where I can run it on my laptop that will know what to do with the drive and allow me to pull data from it? TIA Danny
  24. Hello All As per the title really. I have around 250GB of data to move from a local network share to a Google Shared Drive. Does anyone know if Google offers a program to do this? I don't really just want to do a CTRL-A and select all and drag and drop incase anything gets missed etc or it fails due to the amount of data. What do you lot use when you have found yourself moving data from a local server to a Google Shared Drive? TIA
  25. Thanks for the update - Looks like HP charge for the F.W update so that won't happen. Guess I will need to try and get my hands on some older disks and see which ones the system will pickup.
