To be on the safe side, I removed the old DPS msi from the GPO, then added the new one. The clients then removed the old one before installing the new one as is the standard way with GP installations. @indiegirl - I didn't try just adding the new msi, but that would also work if the new one is registered as an upgrade to the old, which it must be if it worked for you!

I can agree with webman. Three years ago we spent about £1800 on a Sony AIT-3 drive. It is both the most expensive and most unreliable component I have ever bought. We had it replaced under warranty twice. Sony said it was our U320 SCSI adapter was too fast for it (really!) and was causing it to fail after a few months. It was a known problem. We had to spend £100 for a seperate slower SCSI card to get the third drive to work for more than two months. Still had some problems - mainly tapes wearing out after only a few uses. At £35 a time tapes were costing us a fortune. :x I eventually gave up with tape storage and built myself a NAS device out of an old PC and some 200GB SATA drives. The downside is that it's not offsite, but when we get the new extension built in September I'll move it over there, which is almost as good.

I was surprised at this, so had alook round and found this. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like you can use targets with the id attribute. It's all good stuff.

Thanks to all of you. You've put my fears at ease. XHTML it is! I knew XHTML was been out for a while, but thought that it still hadn't been widely adopted. I didn't want to end up with a site that only worked properly in Firefox, or something like that. 3wschools.com is agreat website and has been my main source of info so far in css and xhtml. @daverage - I've been to tek-tips before, but hadn't seen your faq. It's good! I went on a Web design course in 1997, learned to format pages in tables with HTML 4 (pretty new at the time), and to use tabs like to format the text. I hadn't really touched web design since then. Having just got back into it recently has been a bit of a shock. Now I'm having to learn all over again.

Is it worth creating simple web sites in XHTML yet? I don't want to do anything fancy, but I use NVu which will create in XHTML no problem. Does XHTML cause any problems for browsers at the moment? I've also notice that if I use XHTML strict with NVu, it give new pages the .xhtml extension. Does this cause any problems? I want to get with new technologies, but don't want the headache of being 'bleeding edge'. Thanks.

Does anyone else get this? I signed up for three free trial issues long ago, and have been getting it every month since. They keep sending me emails reminding me to register or they'll stop sending me copies, as distribution is limited. The cover price is £6, though they've never asked for money. They just keep sending them. I don't mind. It's quite interesting although most of it is above my head. I just wondered if anyone else got it.

I've just sat through the 50-minute pupil familiarisation materials. I managed to do two and half of the five tasks, and couldn't do them properly. I couldn't get the graph of the pets against names from the database. I just got meaningless graphs with numbers that bore no resemblance to the figures in the database. You can only pick one field to plot. Surely you need two fields, one for the x and one for the y? I spent ages trying to open the email attachment, only to find it was already open. Then just to cap it all it crashed 3 minutes before the end. Our Head teaches Yr9 ICT. He's going to go through this with a select group of pupils. Oh the entertainment value. I should sell tickets.

Yes, I'm having the same problem with one machine. Don't think its Sophos though. I connect either a USB or PS/2 mouse and it works for a few minutes, then just stops responding. I've tried several known good mice. I've also tried re-imaging the machine to rule out software. I think I forgot to reinstall Sophos when I reimaged it, so I don't think its that. I've got Sophos on the whole network, and have no problems anywhere else.

Right, I've just tried to import the pupil data from an Integris PLASC xml file. I get this:- Error: The file you have chosen to import is not the correct XML format. Click Browse to choose another file. Exactly what format does it want? Getting this to work is like wading through treacle.

I have about 20 teachers with wireless laptops. The laptops and staff are subject to their normal group policies. However, I've applied a loopback GPO to the laptops which 'undoes' some of the security in their normal GPO to give them more freedom when using the laptops. I allow them to install their own software and set up home dial-up/broadband - as well as lot of other things. I originally thought that this would cause me a lot of hassle, but it hasn't.

You're right. I'm setting up the users now. I'll do the pupils next. I've looked in the TPS folder but there's no .msi's there yet.

Urrgh... I've successfully (as far as I can see) installed the APS, registered it, and the DPS on a couple of workstations. I've just read the "setting up and managing users" chapter. It did my head in. The DPS workstations keep reporting "Upload in progress. Please try again later", then if I try again, various random things happen: either I get the same message again, on I get "connection failed", or it appears to work. I've been fully registered since 3:00 yesterday, but no test have appeared yet - how long should they take? I'm really having a wonderful time with this.

Yesterday I installed the APS no problem. Logged on to the APS website and sent the registration. Logged on again this morning to check it, still waiting (no problem as it was less than 12 hours since sending). Tried again a couple of hours later. I got something like "there's a problem with the CPS server". Tried again at lunchtime - logged on OK, still waiting. Just tried again (almost 24 hours since sending) and got "Error: Your School Registration Information is corrupted. " This does not look good! :x EDIT: Found the answer in the RM support page. Give tomcat write permission to the drive root.

@ Cybernerd, I spoke to John, jolly nice chap. He did say that OM3 would be overkill for our little project, and OM1 would be more than enough. He's recommended a cable type and given me a price - very cheap too. He said I should get tight buffered instead of the loose tube I was going to get. I'm only vaguely aware of what this means, but I trust his opinion. It's also saved money - from £1.70/m for what I was going to get to 86p/m. Thanks a lot!

Also: whats the difference between OM2 and OM3 cable? They're both 50/125 aren't they?

Thanks CyberNerd, That's a good website. I'm ploughing through the tutorial. One thing I'm concerned about 50 micron is connecting it to the switch. Do manufacturers (like 3com) make 50 micron fibre modules for their switches? I'm guessing that the module would have to match the cable (or would it?). Please tell me if I'm taking rubbish! It's only a short distance (about 120m), and it is only a sports hall with a small office, so I doubt we'll want 10Gigabit in the forseeable future.

Thanks, face-man. The existing cable terminates at the fibre tray with ST connectors. It would be easy to get them the wrong way round, but would be easy to spot the mistake and put them right again.

I recently been dropped in it by the head and need to buy a fibre cable in the next couple of weeks. (See my other thread) The electrical contractor will start on site soon, and can pull in our fibre cable with the phone cables to be terminated by others later when the extension is completed. I've asked around and done some research and it seems that this is the type I should buy. Loose tube 62.5 / 125 multimode Indoor / Outdoor LSOH This certainly seems to be the most common type, and so I imagine is the type used in gigabit fibre ethernet comms. This is the type of fibre we also have going to another part of the building. Any advice (apart from the obvious - get a specialist contractor to do it)?

Be fair to the guy, though. He was born in 1874. For someone of that time to make any prediction about computers is impressive. He was also making the comment in 1943, when the world was a very different kind of place. The five customers he may have been thinking about could have been Britain, America, Russia, Japan and Germany. If either of the last three had got the computer at that time, the world would be a very different kind of place now. Sorry, I'm digressing.

Does anyone know of a good idiot's guide to Exchange Server 2003? I'm a complete newbie to it.

This is what I like about EduGeek. I'm just dabbling with some pocket PCs and Exchange server. Right now I've got the HTTP_500 error. I've seen others. Chris, if you get the solution, please let me know.

I agree with above. As I've said before, I'm a 'Microsoft man', I don't know much about linux, but I do use a lot of Windows ports of Open Source software. It seems to me that all the new ideas for features in IE7 and Vista have been acquired from the Open Source community.
