Thanks Andy, I thought of that whilst making the msi, but didn't try it. I didn't know you could map a drive for a machine startup script. I thought that just for user's scripts. The msi works, so I'll just use that instead.

I'm trying to install K-Lite Codec Pack (it includes Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative which are on Russ's Essential Software list) I've used the Unattended Install feature to create the .exe, .ini, and .bat files - but what am I supposed to do with them? Putting all the files in a server share and setting the .bat to run as a startup script doesn't work, because batch files don't support UNC paths. I deploy all my software as .msi's and have never had to install with a script before. I'm in the process of making a .msi to install it as I'm writing this, but there must be an easy way of using the .bat. How does everyone else do it?

The price would have to come down though.

I thought these were quite dinky. Might be good for stuff like a wireless mouse.

Knoppix was my first experience with Linux a few months ago. Now I carry a copy of the CD in my work bag all over. I've rescued documents form many duff hard drives in exactly the same scenario as you described.

Like I said, I believed (and still do) that LNL were legitimate. The market of supplying printers and consumables to schools seems to be full of rogues. I don't know why this should be, but it is. A lot of us have been stung by "too good to be true" schemes (scams). I was just checking with my peers to see if anyone else had any experience of LNL.

I was searching for something else when I came across this. I've given my mapped drives user-friendly names now. Great! Another little niggle sorted.

I had the same trouble a while ago - I couldn't get their MSI for v10 to work, can't remember the details though. I ended up reverting to v 8.5, which does work. All the software we have works with this version.

What do you do all day? Including server, printers etc. its about 150:1. I'm term time only.

Thanks Ric, I'd already tried that approach, but it didn't work. I reset the DNS entries the way they were, logged on to Liberum and changed the base URL in the configuration page. I hoped there may be a way of doing it without doing all this, but it didn't take long in the end.

Thought I'd reword this to make it look simpler, (and bring it to the top again!). I wrote the above last night at home, when I wasn't thinking clearly. I had Liberum helpdesk on:- intranet.domain.local/helpdesk I've changed the DNS entry so that helpdesk.domain.local now points to it. I've also changed the host header. I can go to http://helpdesk.domain.local no problem, but if I go to http://helpdesk.domain.local/helpdesk, I get redirected to http://intranet.domain.local/helpdesk/logon.asp?URL=/helpdesk/Default.asp, which of course no longer exists in DNS, so I get a 'page not found'. It seems that Liberum is using an absolute reference to the old URL. How do I change it? Thanks.

Please help, I previously had our intranet and liberum running on IIS on our intranet (intranet.domain.local). I decided to move the intranet to a new Linux server, but keep liberum on the old IIS server. I've changed DNS so that intranet.domain.local now points to the new Linux server. I've added a new DNS entry so helpdesk.domain.local points to the existing IIS server with liberum. I've also changed the host header in IIS to helpdesk.domain.local. Now, if I try to access liberum, I get an error message from the new intranet server. Liberum is still referring to it's old address of intranet.domain.local. I've found and entry in config.asp to the old address, but changing it to the new address had no effect. How do I tell Liberum that it's moved to a different address? Thanks.

Ooh my poor head! Are they easy to administer, compatible with Outlook and well supported? I'm all for Open Source generally, but don't want to risk my neck on something that all the staff will use. With something like this, any mistake will be very public. Call me a coward!

Contratulations. Ours is 3.5 yrs. The first 6 months is the hardest, then you start getting into the swing of it.

Thanks to everyone for your help. It looks like I'll go with fetchmail or something like that in the short term. I'll look into a 'proper' solution later. The client are a charity, so only pay a fraction of the retail price for MS licences - so Exchange isn't so expensive. I don't know anything about SBS, so stayed away from it. Funnily enough, we got a new head this week. The first thing she came to me with was a query about the school's email. She was amazed at the crappy webmail system we're using, and wants Exchange ASAP. Looks like I'll be setting it up at school sooner than I thought. In at the deep end. Please help, I'm tearing my hair out with what should be simple. I'm new to Exchange Server. I'm working for a private client over the summer holidays and the want an email system in their office. Six users, all using the same btconnect email address. I've set up Exchange Server 2003 Standard edition (evaluation), and a couple of mailbox-enabled test user accounts. They can happily send email to each other, share calendars etc. on the local domain. (I thought that I could put the incoming external email into a public folder for them all to see). Now how do I get them to be able to send email to the outside world using their btconnect email account? In Outlook, you enter the name, email address, password, incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP email servers, and it just works. Where do you put the equivalent information in Exchange? I feel like a complete idiot with this. I'm obviously going about this the wrong way. What am I doing wrong? ](*,) I intend to set up Exchange at the school next term, so I need to get this mastered before I start there. (Fortunately, my client know I haven't set up Exchange before, so they're letting me use this as a training session - I'm not charging them for this) Thanks.

Does anyone use a good scheme for leasing laptops to students? We were contacted a few months ago by a couple of companies offering schemes where parents would be in a contract directly with the leasing company, and the school wouldn't be financially involved. I didn't do anything about it at the time. We have a small number of SEN pupils who would benefit from having their own laptop; with assistive software, configured display, accessibility options etc. suited for their needs. Does anyone use such a scheme? I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Ok right. I suppose that did make me sound like a geeky square nerd. I'm not really, though, honest. I usually just stick my head round the door, grab a bottle and a plateful of nibbles, then go back to the server room to finish what I was doing. Err... that sounds worse, doesn't it?

I've used CCL privately for several years, since before they moved to the shiny new building they're in now. Never for the school though. I think they came second in PCPro's customer service awards a few months ago. I had trouble with my last order though. They sent me the AGP instead of PCI version of the graphics card I ordered. I had a hard time getting it swapped. This is the first time I've had any trouble with them.

I don't work in the holidays, so last week of term is especially busy for me. Our LEA have just provided me (today) with a SmartWater kit to mark all equipment before summer. I also have to remove all the ceiling projectors on the last day, just as they all want to show "Pirates of the Caribbean". The best one is the party in the staffroom at 3:45. Several people come to me every year: Teach: "Aren't you joining us?" Me: "I can't - too much to do before the end" Teach: "Aww... Just leave it" Me: "I wish I could"
