If it's external grade cable on both you should be fine regardless, and even then it's unlikely you'll hit any issues. I have a run of around 30 meters from my house to my workshop down the bottom of the garden with both mains and cat6 and don't have any problems (all through a hosepipe)

Yeah, as above - this day and age I don't particularly believe that a standalone VLE is worth the money - it won't add anything to education, and the money you save can be spent buying in some decent cloud based stuff for specific subjects or wider of course. Could be worth looking at the gov's £2k grant thing to get you set up on Gsuite/O365.

Random one. I've just had this with a remoteapp connection. Used teamviewer to check, SIMS would load without issue then instantly minimise. When bringing it back up, its in a sort of "hung" state until resizing the window. Even odder - it's absolutely fine with any other SIMS user. I can recreate the problem on the server itself as admin user. How on earth could a SIMS user cause this?

I'm loathed to watch it - not because of the message, but because Moore is a sensationalist moron; a tabloid documentary maker at most. You could go too far of course - wipe out half the planet, EMP and kill off all technology and let us go back to hunting & foraging for food, bringing us back to how "nature intended us". Of course things would soon get back around - after all we can see animals using tools with no prompting or influence from humans. Nothing will properly improve without massive external influence, whether it's disease (heh), Thanos, natural disaster or war - that's the population control. And then, until we can sack off things that make some people think irrationally - money, resources, religion, things will always come full circle again. I've spoken about it before, and refer to it as the "Star Trek" timeline - where, like in ST money no longer exists and/or is no longer the driving force behind existence and humans come together as a species. But whilst as a species we're both intelligent yet so monumentally stupid, it won't happen.

We've just taken ours off the domain, created a local admin account and handed them over. There's no data on them anyway due to uev/mandatory profiles, already bitlockered from build and that's it. Filtering etc isn't our issue when off-site and in short notice it really isn't worth it. paperwork signed to say they're liable for damages, replacement etc and that's it. There's no point over-complicating something, especially if the majority is done on google/teams etc.

We've used it for around 7 years and have been extremely happy with it; only replacing it due to a complete network overhaul, however we would have been more than happy to expand/update what we had. A mixture of the original AP's and Pros made up our estate and reliability was excellent. I tinkered later with some more advanced stuff like radius authentication on guest portals to good success. We still have some bridges running on old UAP Outdoor and Outdoor 5Gs, and they have been faultless (except for one I bricked by accidentally sticking the wrong voltage into it!) and their uptime has been astonishing. I couldn't recommend it enough. Also used a linux VM for controller, and to this day have yet to see anyone else's controller that is as intuitive as Unifi; ok it's not as advanced as Ruckus, Aruba etc but they'd all have MUCH to learn by taking some of it as an example!

As much as I dislike Zoom and the idiots that run it, this smacks of idiot user more than anything else. Regardless, have to feel horrid for the poor souls that saw that; hope they can get some sort of counselling.

We use impero, but not on BYOD. You would have policy in place for that, something along the lines of "If you wish to use your device on the network you accept that we need to install XYZ software - without it, it doesn't connect". The software type doesn't come into it; it's their computer, they can uninstall whatever they wish. Impero actually requests the admin password before it lets you uninstall the usual way but doesnt stop anyone getting around that with 3rd party uninstallers or manual removal.

Desktop PC's generally won't chatter much. Check the same figures on your printer vlan. (Stereotypical sexism alert!) PC's are like a load of drunken old men in a pub, they'll acknowledge eachother's existence, make it known when they're about to puke or pass out and let everyone know when it's time to go home. Printers however are like stereotypical women on a shopping spree; you can't shut them up for love nor money and even chatter away in their sleep. (No offence meant by this poor analogy of course, an old schoolfriend of mine used this once and it's stuck with me ever since). I'd add something about the strange devices invariably connected to your network even though you'd rather they didn't - you know the sort, cashless catering systems designed by Archimedes himself, "smart" heating systems you're fairly sure are sentient and plotting to kill us all and those ruddy little chinesium laptops that Mummy bought Johnny saying "It's every bit as good as Suzie's Dell but only cost £70" but conform to no standards for anything. We all know the sort, the label says it's an Intel ABGN yet when you plug it into the network it's screaming GIVE ME ALL THE TOKENS! like a crazy old civil war veteran who's forgotten what year it is.

Ah, I'll see if anyone else has cunning plans then; we just put our foot down and said noone should be expected to print anything from home, certainly not this day and age (referring to exams but these days it's all PDF format, so no issue there). I wouldn't want staff printing anything at home though, mostly to protect them and us from data loss.

Mostly for quotes, my primary has a couple of times - they're not bad but they're not setting the world alight with pricing. Our local preferred supplier (ex Misco people from the first time round!) nearly always hammers them on price and service.

Yes, the joys of Crapita's 1990's software bugs causes the same problems in Options & Exams modules too. The fix for us was to disable the tickbox in the RDP connection to redirect printers.

I'm one of the people that actually loved it. The only bit's that fell flat for me were the oversized floppy and the sex change joke that didn't go anywhere. Everything else felt really like "the good old days" even without rose tinted glasses - some of the more sombre moments felt like Marooned and Better than Life, character acting feeling very much like the series 3 to 6 heyday and little nods to Terrorform (remember Kryten's hand?), Quarantine and Back to Reality. Even the Boys from the Dwarf thing raised a smile More importantly it felt like they enjoyed making it which comes across well, but they generally always do. Glad to revisit the Cat story (see Series 2 episode Waiting for God & more to the point the book Infinity Welcomes Careful drivers) but would have loved to see the Cat himself see a little more screentime as a result.. I have fanboyed over this one somewhat so I do apologise a little!

It still has quite a large cloud over it regarding security which makes me nervous - that on it's own wouldn't have been enough to warrant asking staff not to use it, but the companies attitude towards that lax security firmly drove the nail into the coffin. They may well have apologised and detailed a resolution, but haven't gone looking for it yet until back to work

Massive shame - was honoured to meet this absolute legend who remained down to earth and pleasant as you'd ever hope for a few years back. Could have talked for hours, days maybe and the point is he would have, given the chance. He was no different speaking to me than he was to Prince (Harry/William, can't remember which) and was the same for absolutely everyone. A name that will live on forever without doubt, and rightly so. RIP Sir Stirling.

We wrote off the idea of registering entirely as it wouldn't be manageable that we could think of; instead just opting to ensure that teachers set assignments that were appropriate and were returned for checking in a deadline. It wouldn't therefore matter if students did this during the day, at the weekend etc as long as it was done, plus it helps keep the 3 hours max per day guideline happy. It's then easy to see what children are not engaging and they/parents are contacted as appropriate.

If you do need a VLE in place (I don't think many do - we don't appear to have any issues with teams) then Moodle is certainly the way to go. If you want someone to host and look after it for you, speak to Overnet Data (best known for Edulink) who are awesome and they know it inside out.
