Iiyama's support is driving me to distraction, I'm finding them extremely poor. Our issue isn't IWB's but digital signage displays that can't do something as simple as keep track of time. Not a major issue until you need them to turn on/off on a schedule and they change their own dates for no reason whatsoever. Iiyama's only response so far has been to do a firmware update, and radio silence after that despite many attempts.

I've used AMC very often for UniFi kit, and have used 4gon and MSDist in the past also. With exception to the new vape alarms and associated gubbins however unlikely to be using them for much else any more (vape alarms we bought direct as they were sold out before any disties got a look in!)

Incorrect. All colleges. Until the government departments can decide how an actual school can do this whilst banning the equipment most likely to help and chopping schools budgets, this is not going to happen. -
To be fair it might be nearer that these days - those figures are from back when I did recycling in circa 2006/2007! And that was with HUGE specialist equipment to tear down/extract. I wonder if these days it might be a little less lucrative due to the prevalence of lion/lipo batteries, getting to the point where too much kit is like a fridge and not even scrappies want them thanks to the gases in them

They still make money stripping & recycling certain parts - any laptop or desktop still has around £20-30 value in precious metals alone. Even if you feel bad dumping the 400 kettle leads you've accumulated, don't - unless they're awful quality, there's enough copper in them to justify operational cost of stripping them down.

Ah, fair enough Can I assume the two incidents were not linked? That's a scenario that I think could be pushed back on a little - for example, what's the worst that should be able to happen when a student's account is compromised? Some lost homework perhaps, maybe they may have some PII stored in areas such as on a CV etc, but unless there's a very unlikely and specific reason for targeting a student, it'll be for one purpose only email spam - something which should have controls in place anyway. @mdrabble's idea is an interesting one - the law, if I recall correctly states it's a "bell to bell" rule? Therefore doing it before school officially starts or after it ends circumvents that nicely, but a pain to do in bulk. I'd imagine there must be some exception to the rule though for things like this? I'm probably way too vocal for people's liking on this matter,fully acknowledging that MFA is, whilst not infallible, a Good Thing but this whole trend doesn't actually solve any real problem regarding students and incurs expense and/or headache for schools already struggling on budget, even more so now with yet another unfunded pay rise for teachers.

Are you secondary and in the UK? If so a) the mobile phone ban took effect this monday just gone regardless of any school policy (it's law) , and b) if it's secondary/primary then it's only really a requirement if you are looking for cyber essentials - that alone is only needed if you're a college and for some RPA providers.

Been using EnviroElectronics for ages, never had a single complaint. They leave us a big wheely bin, we fill it, they swap it for an empty when needed. More often than not it's 30% IT and nearly all entirely unusable as I've cannibalised everything, 50% site/science (for instance it's half full of those large orange variable power supplies they use in Science currently), a few broken fans/heaters and the odd other item no-one knows what to do with but it has a plug, so in it goes. I've no doubt it's a relief for them to open it up to find a couple of working but tiny LCD screens or older laptop every now and then

That's the thing - a bit like what we've tried to teach people for years about what they see on the internet, blindly copying and pasting things can certainly be dangerous and inaccurate so you need to be able to verify certain things - does it look like, is the source genuine and trustworthy etc. Other side of the dice though, any tom, dick or harry could put a lot of nonsense in a book or article and get it published to a point, and the librarian wouldn't know much about every single topic you might care to research! -
Nothing like your issue here but might have a distant link - in the last couple of weeks our Sophos has started interfering with certificate distribution/SSL inspection despite it actually being disabled in sophos central. Sites including our MIS every now and then hit "This page isn't secure" prompts and digging into the certificate, rather than finding Smoothwall as the CA as I'd expect, it states Sophos - very odd considering it's disabled! I have a call open but they're not exactly being quick about it

Morning, in the interest of sharing as much data as possible, I suspect there might be a few folk with these in the community! We had 2 of them, one with a broken case & hinge but intact LCD, and one with a broken LCD. Should be an easy swap right? Right? HP's take on right to repair is relatively decent but video guides such as the below fall into the common trap of making it look far easier than it actually is. I come with easier ways! The adhesive is stronger than Superman and heat barely touches it, so no amount of "careful prying" is going to get the LCD and touch panel away from the case without damage. And a bonus, you do not need to remove the whole assembly from the chromebook prior to doing this. Unclip the touch surround from the case with a pry tool but don't go pulling too hard. As the adhesive only starts about 5-6cm down, there's enough room to pull the top away from the case quite easily - but not too much! Enough to see the blue release tab for the adhesive at each corner. You should be able to get a decent pair of tweezers or better still, narrow long nose pliers down to grab those tabs and pull them CAREFULLY. Once all the way out, it's all good and you have a loose, replaceable panel and/or touchscreen digitizer.

Thank you I think I may be getting too old for this game - have been happy using AI tentatively to help as a reminder for commands, but never thought of trying it with this. If anyone is interested, the reply from Gemini is below. From my own experience I believe it to be somewhat accurate. I had debrided all the explosive bits last night and added solder mask to further protect, and couldn't see evidence of any other layers of the PCB underneath, at least not in this area. Made the pads good for connection but didn't want to go guessing on the transistor, my initial thought was it was going to be the same as the H2A in Q6 and Q7 but they're very low current and would have certainly popped immediately. Still vaguely hopeful VS might come back to me with either schematics or a supplier of the board but I do rather like a challenge Based on the visual evidence of the board layout, the board model (Viewsonic S03AKRT25AR1R), and the main Realtek RTD2525AR scaler chip, component Q10 is the Panel VCC Power Switch. You are correct that it belongs to the transistor family; specifically, it is a P-Channel Enhancement Mode MOSFET in a SOT-23 package. Component Identification & Specifications In almost all Viewsonic, ASUS, and Acer monitor mainboards utilizing Realtek scalers, this exact power-switching position uses one of a few standard, highly interchangeable P-channel MOSFETs: Primary Part Number: AO3401 (or AO3401A) Common SMT Marking Codes: A19T, A1SHB, X11V Direct Alternatives: SI2301 (Marked A1SHB), AP2301, or WPM2301 Typical Specifications Parameter Value Package Type SOT-23-3 (Surface Mount) Polarity P-Channel MOSFET Drain-Source Voltage ($V_{DS}$) -30V Continuous Drain Current ($I_D$) -4A to -4.2A On-Resistance ($R_{DS(on)}$) $\le 50\text{ m}\Omega$ @ -10V Crucial Troubleshooting Warning A catastrophic, charred explosion of the Panel VCC MOSFET like the one on your board rarely happens on its own. This type of failure is almost always caused by a massive downstream short circuit drawing excessive current through the transistor until it self-destructs. ⚠️ Do not just solder a new MOSFET on yet. If you replace it without finding the root cause, the new component will likely explode the moment you plug the monitor back in. Before installing a replacement, perform the following checks using a multimeter: Check the LCD Panel / T-CON Board for Shorts: Unplug the LCD ribbon cable from the mainboard. Use your multimeter in continuity mode to check between the VCC power pins on the ribbon cable side and Ground. It is highly common for a tiny ceramic decoupling capacitor (MLCC) on the LCD matrix/T-CON board to short out to ground. Inspect the Ribbon Cable: Ensure the pins inside the ribbon connector (CN405) aren't bent, melted, or bridging together. Test Diode D4: The diode right next to Q10 (D4) is inside the immediate blast radius and handles suppression for that sub-circuit. Use the diode-test mode on your multimeter to ensure it hasn't failed shorted. Clean the Area: Use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and an old toothbrush to completely scrub away the black carbon conductive char from the board. Carbonized PCB material can act as a resistor and cause further short circuits. If the copper pads are lifted, you may need to scratch back the solder mask on the remaining trace and jump a small enameled wire to the source/drain connections. -
Think we're starting to get a couple of false positives through. Although so far it's 100% accurate for our boys WC deployment regarding vape vs Lynx/Sure/Lidl De-SmellySpray, I suspect that it's less accurate regarding girls sprays, whether it's body sprays, perfumes, mists etc I'm not yet sure. Or is that more of an indication of what is in vape these days? We can at least be sure 80% of hits in the girls lavs are accurate and to me that's still much of an improvement over other sensors. Webhook is working really well to link with Google Chat for instant notification and I'm going to expand it to either display something on a digital signage display right opposite those WC's to alert whoever is on duty, or rig up some basic LED lighting system. A good excuse to break out a Pi! (Although this is likely just going to be a precursor to grabbing an "AI speaker" if SLT are happy. Signs look good for that on the technical side, however policy & procedure may be the tricky bit for them to tackle!)

I'm aware this is a massive long shot, but whilst waiting for viewsonic to probably not tell me what I need. I have an older VX3276-MHD monitor much loved by it's user, and the heat has finally gotten to it. A component on the main board went pop, The mainboard is part S03AKRT25AR1R and the component that blew in quite spectacular fashion is transistor Q10 to the right of the LCD ribbon. Would anyone happen to have one of these and also be able to get at the mainboard to tell me the value of said transistor please? Can't get a decent enough image on google searches to track the value

Yeah I get your point, but what I mean is why add the extra step of editing PDFs when that could then just be achievable via a word document? I started typing that Word can edit most PDF's anyway but then remembered how "well" it handles tables and things exam papers are often full of But if they're coming down as editable PDFs anyway, and already locked down then the standard Adobe Reader can handle that, and it wouldn't need any of the extra stuff that EWP or other exam specific bits add like cover sheets etc.

I'd like to think it's made up, but these days, I'd suspect it probably has happened. And as much as I'd like to preach solidarity, if real I would hope anyone involved in the IT of that school was immediately marched off site under gross misconduct never to be let near anything electronic ever again. -

Really struggling with the webhooks documentation is between non-existent and dire, with the most detailed being this: https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/25478744592023-Send-UniFi-Protect-Alerts-to-Web-Services-using-Webhooks All I'd like to do effectively is post to a google chat, and that doesn't seem like it should be too difficult - in the chat space, add integration, webhook, copy the URL and paste that into the URL of the webhook notifications panel in Protect. Does nada though, and suspect it needs some sort of authentication somewhere. The protect side of it clearly works, tried it with Slack and that just works, no questions asked. Very much out of my depth as it's software rather than something I can.... well, think Homer strangling Bart. I'll keep plugging through, notification via email will suffice at a push but I'd rather make it a bit more instant.
