Overview

Well, I have swallowed the Google pill. It's only been a week, so still getting used to the way things work. Appalled at some of the permissions some apps and Google claim to need, and finding ad/free replacements for some of my apps has been a challenge. I'm still sticking to my dislike of the "messiness" of the system at the moment. My 640XL is now in the kitchen (sim-less) providing music via Spotify while I am cooking and still retains email/Calendar/To Do/Weather/Plex and a few other bits and pieces. I was hoping to hang onto it as my daily driver for a bit longer, but there were signs that the SD card was on the way out - so I thought it might be time for the switch.

Good point about the security, but it's Apple. I appreciate that they've done a lot to improve the design of mobile UI, but they're far too closed off for my liking. Same with the apps; I'm struggling to think of one that I would really want on my current phone. Maybe a decent "scan the barcode and check Amazon and/or eBay for price" type one, a navigation option that factors in traffic better and, now that Bookviser won't let me sign in, one that allows me to continue reading on my Windows tablet and vice versa. My wife would like me to be able to install stalking/Family Tracking app Life 360. Anyway, MS are really hammering the nails in the coffin and have announced that they're killing off Wallet. Not that the NFC worked in the UK, but I'd just decided that I'd try it for store cards. Back to Stocard it is, then.

I had a look round recently and decided I rather liked the iPhone SE mainly because of the price. I intensely dislike both Apple and Google, but at least Apple has the advantage of not having a fragmented platform that manufacturers can do what they want with and all the inherent security issues this brings along. I don't really want a whole load of apps, maybe just a few basic mainstream ones but I can live without them if needed. What I really dislike is the stupidly inflating size of phones these days and the equally stupid assumption that I'm happy to pay more for my phone than for my PC. Of course now I find Apple have discontinued the SE as of late last year, only stupidly expensive iPhones now available.

I heard this news over the weekend. Not unexpected, but still gutted. Have had to reset my phone twice over the last week: the first time to fix a problem with making/receiving calls (also fixed Cortana) and the second when my SD card died shortly after. (Apparently some cards have a safety feature of preventing write actions when they have reached their stated maximum rather than risk corrupting existing data). I was pleasantly surprised at how little manual work I had to do. Not going to be much fun to do everything manually, and that's assuming they don't start pulling apps from the store . When my 640XL gets unusable, it will be an Android as I have an intense dislike of the Apple cult. (As opposed to a deep mistrust of the Google one!). Probably one of the up-and-coming (?) brands and a sub £200 large screen model.

Your welcome, I love my Windows phone, it mostly acts as a MP3 player now as the desktop app syncs my media library so well while its always a bit of a faff with android.

I suspect I may need to post this in the main forum to get a reply, but it's about time the dust sheets were lifted here! My trusty HTC HD2 on WinMo 6.5 is sadly nearing the end of its life and it's time to pick a new phone. I like the look of the 1520, but that's getting long in the tooth and finding a new one at a sensible price isn't easy, so I've got it narrowed down to a 640 XL or a 950 XL (with my eyesight, I need a big screen!). 640 XL: cheap, WP 8.1 possibly more stable than 10 (but should be upgradeable), no Continuum. 950 XL: latest and greatest, W10 allegedly still buggy on phones, ridiculously priced, may lose free dock if not bought soon(?). Anyone got experience of either and can comment? Or should I wait for the Acer Jade Primo and its possibly cheaper cousin?

HTC HD2. Upgraded from my blackberry bold. Took a bit of getting used to, but happy enough with it (and happier to ditch the blackberry charges!)

I now have an HTC Touch Pro 2 with WM6.1 which is totally fantastic in comparison to my old S730, 256MB of RAM really does make a huge difference fron the 64MB that the old one had.

New phone now HTC Touch Pro now reflashed with EnergyROM using Windows Mobile 6.5... love it

HTC Diamond pro which is currently winging its way to the 'great' carphone warehouse in the sky. Vodafone don't have any in stock locally to replace it with so looks like i'm getting a HP ipaq Data Messenger (!!?)

@contink - a lot of certs you buy are not mobile compatible. We bought ours from Geotrust as they do a mobile guaranteed cert.

Just started with a Samsung Omnia

Started 6 years ago with Orange SPV E200 and moved up that range. Now got HTC Touch Diamond, Like NPearce I have updated the ROM (a few times) and antenna.

Currently got a Touch Diamond, Didnt like it at first but updated antenna firmware and threw on a cooked ROM and its a fantastic bit of kit.

Thanks for inviting me. I too have quite a history with WinMo and I'm pretty much firmly into the "addict" territory! Current device is an HTC Athena x7510 (a.k.a. T-Mob Ameo 16 GB) and while it's quite LARGE to carry around I'm hooked on it.

I had the orig MDA Vario - dropped it down the loo one day - didn't recover from that one Got an MDA VarioII - lasted about 15 months and then started doing strange things and needed replacing. Now got a Samung Omnia and I'm really missing my customisable buttons and built in stylus but looking forward to the world of mobile T'internet with by 500M/month allowance

@wellscrs, Synack's right, it won't be costing you anything. But if its something you're particularly worried about theres a great, free app called gb-soft tweak. THis'll allow you o set all kinds of attributes to do with gprs timeouts. I use it to set mine to be properly always on.

@wellscrs - The GPRS connection in itself being open should not be costing you money as as far as I am aware data is charged for by the amount of information downloaded rather than the time. I don't personally have a Titan but you may be able to kill the data connection by holding the red call end button for several seconds while on the home screen. Otherwise have a look around for the connection manager software on the device which should let you disconnect.
