About this Group

A group for all those working in the Primary School sector
  1. What's new in this group
  2. yes i Do but I'm incorporating the admin network (sims server) to my new flat network in the summer
  3. Yes I do here and Im looking to get rid of it. These days it seems standard to have a SIMS member server and just one network.
  4. Hi Ian, I work for a company called Design & Management Systems Ltd, we have an alternative to Ranger software called Netflow. It is compatible with Server 2008 and Windows 10. Please contact us for further details Thanks Sarah Design & Management Systems Ltd [email protected]
  5. We don't have two different networks, but that's the joy of not being under the LA's heavy hand. @witch can tell some stories about this!
  6. Yes, I support the admin and curriculum networks, and pretty much all IT related devices in both schools I work in. Both schools have windows AND Mac networks, which has been an interesting challenge...
  7. As the title suggests. In Primarys do you still just support the Curriculum or admin networks too? Looking forward to the replys.
  8. Hi we are a 4 man team supporting 38 primary schools and they all use RM ranger. RM has dropped support and development for Ranger and since it does not support windows 10 and MS are stopping free down grade licencing, this will cause major issues. does anyone have any ideas on a Ranger replacement? or do people have gpo's for locking down desktop to the same level as Ranger would or scripts for bulk user import / password reset or just any advice and help on going vanilla? regards Ian
  9. This really would be better as a thread on the forum boards. Mor epeople will see it.
  10. Put the teacher machine (and IWB, if you have one) by the door, then have all the machines with their screens facing the door. This will mean: 1. The teacher can see everybody's screen from his/her machine (during lessons) or from the door (during wet plays, for example). 2. The children have to turn away from their screens when being addressed by the teacher, so they can't fiddle the the mouse or keyboard. 3. Compared to U-shape layouts, where computer screens face each other, there is less potential for children to turn around and chat (across the middle of the 'U'). 4. The children are not distracted by what is happening outside the door. I agree with the principle of recycling older laptops as tethered desktops, but make sure they're well secured.
  11. Hi all At the moment we are planning the process of upgrading to windows server 2008 + Win 7 and at the same time are looking to change the layout / hardware in the IT suite. I was hoping to get some ideas from other primary techs of how your it suite(s) are laid out. We currently have 16 desktops but we are thinking of replacing these with our existing fizzbook laptops which have poor battery life so will be left plugged in then buying another set of netbooks for the classes to share
  12. been in primary schools for 5 years now site manager and IT fixer when they break it, which happens a fair bit. got a new school being built that will be opening in 12 weeks all new IT being installed more fun soon then...
  13. Been doing it for nearly 6 years now, its an ever changing environment. I do teach as well though (half the week in bits, just ICT) so I do get some kind of break from technical all the time. Found time just flies by...oh except when things go badly wrong!
  14. Ive been working in primary schools for 2 years now. Great Job, Always something new to find. Hope I can be of sum assistant please PM me with any questions. ITGUY22
  15. @bluepixel - good to have you back on the forum and look foward to seeing more of your posts. It is amazing what gets plugged into what in a school environment, I once had to pull a ham sandwidge out of an inkjet printer, still in the gladwrap thankfully but quite well wedged between the rollers
  16. Hi everyone I haven't posted much either, it's all go once I get to work. Determined to more this year though. Just thought I would recount a funny tech request from a teacher who said her printer wasn't working after the holidays. Checked it out and found that she had plugged her printer usb cable into the data port on the wall!! Fortunately the port wasn't damaged or the cable, but talk about hilarious
  17. that does look cool. How would it be used in school?
  18. Anyone here using j2e.com - home page if so what's your view. I'm looking at using it, seems to be terrific value for money?
  19. I love working in primary schools. Very nice places to work. Plus you get to manage *everything*
  20. Hi..just thought i'd reply and agree with everything you just said. It's nice to know there's a place on here where we can talk to other primary schools. It can get a little intimidating when you're asking advice from a techie at a 1000+ pupil academy Will be good to see what kind of technology other schools are using.
  21. Primary schools are excellent places to work! How are you finding it, what is your role within these schools and are you taking into consideration not just the technical parts but how it all benefits the curriculum! Very important when being a techie in a primary, they need the whole package! Glad to see there are more and more people joining this group (although it's quiet) it means that primary schools are finally getting the support they need with I.T, whether it be a teacher with a keen interest or a share of a full time techie, excited to see how much further primary schools can move with regards to curriculum resources with an I.T twist!
  22. It is very quiet on the discussion boards. I'm new to Primary schools, been doing this now, about 2 months. Looking after 6 primary schools. How do other people find working in primary schools? My background is mostly Secondary schools and bit of Coporate.
  23. Well as I renounced my primary school title, I'm back in the fray. Loving being back in a nice small school with wonderfully behaved children, makes me wonder why I ever left to do secondary Long live the Primary School Techs (well not too long, i want to expand the business )
  24. some of us only have 3 or 6 hours a week at each school :-)
  25. We don't seem to be a very chetty bunch - perhaps because we spend most of our time fire fighting, I know I do. Being the only tech in the school has it's disadvantages.
  26. Shame the post counts are a bit low! Any primary related questions would be of use here, even if you are copying and pasting from an original thread in the main forum! Keeps us on our toes! Have a great Easter break people!
