Missing GPO Settings

Hi All

 

A couple of years ago i upgraded our 2008R2 domain to a 2012R2 domain, by installing two new 2012 R2 servers onto the domain, promoting them and then removing the 2008R2's by demoting them and deleting the accounts.

All has gone well and been running happily ever since.

However, in April we will be leaving our LEA for internet access and moving to a Virgin Media/Smoothwall setup I am currently in the process of testing out the Smoothwall proxy web filters and i have come across a problem.

 

In 2008 R2 group policies were set in User Configuration>Windows Settings>Internet Explorer Maintenance.

Now our LEA proxy settings were setup like that back in the day, however that option is gone in 2012R2 yet the clients are still picking it up. Come 1st April when i need to delete or change those settings i cant, anyone know how to change them in 2012R2.

 

Oh and adding internet explorer settings to User Configuration>Preferences>Control Panel Settings>Internet Explorer doesn't overwrite them.

Have you tried to access the GPO on a Windows 7 computer that is running IE9?

Assuming you've not used a 2012 or Windows 8 to edit the GPO you should be able to see the old Internet Explorer Maintenance node.

Otherwise you may find you have to re-create the policy =/

Yeah, this would require an older machine to do it. Either an older DC or a Windows 7/XP client with the RSAT tools installed.

Had some similar experiences with a 2008 server and a new 2012R2 server, luckily I had the 2008 server running and was able to change some of the settings, but IIRC they become hardcoded in registry somewhere and cannot be undone.

This may not be your problem exactly, but it was very similar as I couldn't work out why the IE settings were still being applied.

Thanks guys, i installed an old version of Windows 7 and then the Remote Administration tools. I can now happily delete the proxy settings in time for 1st April.
