Update: Yep, changes are no longer synced in Explorer and the App says "There was a problem opening this location", just like before. Arthur Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO to be released on 14 April 2014 to VLSC « Windows IT Pro As we've covered a bunch here at WindowsITPro, the 1st update to Windows 8.1 will release through Windows Update on 8 April 2014 as part of Microsoft's regularly scheduled Patch Tuesday. This update is extremely important in that, unless an organization installs it prior to April's Patch Tuesday, no further security updates will be offered. Microsoft has also stated that Update 1 should be treated as any other security update and follow recommended guidelines and corporate policy for updating quickly. Update 1 requires a dependency (KB2919442) before installing. Once available the update will be labeled as KB2919355. Organizations using WSUS, Windows Intune, or System Center Configuration Manager to update systems can just approve or deploy it. There is a manual way of installing the update for those downloading early from MSDN and TechNet (yes, TechNet), but I'd just wait until it's available as a smooth update through Windows Update and connected services. But, what about those companies that depend on created computer images for deploying or upgrading systems? On 14 April 2014, the Windows 8.1 ISO will be updated with the Update 1 bits and made available for download from Microsoft's Volume License Service Center. The updated ISO will replace the one originally made available to VLSC in October 2013. Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a cumulative update, so the new ISO should be used to replace the one stored for image creation now. Instead of just updating your current images with the separate files delivering on 8 April, Microsoft is recommending a full swap. Just use the new ISO. 1
Gatt Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I tried to us the ZIP files from TechNet on a VM and it wasnt for having it - ended up upgrading via the ISO - though it doesnt take long dont want to risk it via SCCM for updating, so may use the ISO method for my current 8.1 PCs and use SCCM for new deployments.

Until that time, we are temporarily suspending the distribution of the Windows 8.1 Update to WSUS servers.

flyinghaggis Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Just installed this today. Doesn't really fix anyone's complaints about the pointlessness of the start screen on a non-touch device and how poorly the metro/modern UI apps work without a touchscreen. They still haven't even gotten round to introducing windowed versions of the Metro apps so I can actually use them effectively. And when I'm using it on a touchscreen it still defaults back to the desktop control panel apps way to often when changing settings/etc. Surely by now they should have replicated nearly all the desktop functionality in the Modern UI? If this is the best a global company with the resources of Microsoft can accomplish in 2 years after the release of Windows 8 they really are in trouble! It's like they're not even trying. I think they should just admit defeat in trying to build a combined UI for both touch and mouse/keyboard and offer up separate UI's for each or else they're in danger of losing both markets. It seemed like a good idea when they launched Windows 8 but it's clearly not working IMO.
